Dr. Johnston graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science. While attending BYU, he had the opportunity to work as a researcher for Clinical Research Associates (CRA), a non-profit organization dedicated to testing and examining the most current dental products and techniques. This opportunity shaped Dr. Johnstons value of research driven products and clinically proven technique to dentistry.
He graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 2005 with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree. He received multiple academic and clinical awards and was inducted into the Stomatognathic Honor Society, the dental honor society of Temple University, and the Oral Surgery Honor Society.
During his junior and senior year at Temple University, Dr. Johnston enjoyed dental mission trips to Romania, Haiti and Eastern Pennsylvania. Dr. Johnston has continued to enjoy dental outreach opportunities through volunteering at local elementary schools educating children about dental hygiene and serving as an affiliated dental provider for the Mobile Dental Unit and Service Dental Day, giving care to the needy and homeless in the local area.
Dr. Johnston has enjoyed leadership opportunities beginning in his undergraduate education as vice president of the Pre-dental club at BYU. He continued to serve as a leader in Dental school as the treasurer and vice president of his dental class working as a liaison between faculty and students. After graduation, he has served as secretary, Vice President and President of the Rogue Valley Dental Association and as a Delegate for the Oregon Dental Association.
After earning his DMD degree, Dr. Johnston was offered an opportunity to work at Siskiyou Community Health Center in Grants Pass, Oregon. This opportunity allowed him to use his ability to speak Spanish fluently and show compassion to those in need. However, his inability to provide comprehensive care due to coverage limitations became frustrating. For this reason, Dr Johnston began private practice in 2007. He enjoys the challenge and diversity of general dentistry and whether hes working on a simple filling or a complex full mouth restoration, he approaches each procedure with the same degree of care and attention to detail. Dr. Johnstons patients consistently comment on his empathy and ability to listen. He also has a gift for treating children.
In 2012 he participated in the Misch International Implant Institute and trained to surgically place implants. Upon completion, he was accepted as a fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologist. He will also soon receive a fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry of which he is a career-long member.
Dr. Johnston was raised in the Utah Valley and has always enjoyed life in the great outdoors. He and his wife, Erica are dedicated and busy parents to 4 boys and 2 girls. In his spare time Dr. Johnston volunteers in his church and local scout group and enjoys swimming, biking, running, playing guitar and reading.

I had an infected molar, causing my jaw to swell, aching pain on the left side of my face. I made the appointment, knowing I do not have dental insurance. When I arrived, they said it would cost 350$, just for an x-ray. And, they would not be extracting the tooth at that time. Just x-ray. The staff was very unsympathetic to my situation. I would never recommend this office. I only give 1 star for the elaborate architecture, which I'm sure cost a ton, and you'll be paying for it with your visit. I would not call Johnson's dental compassionate care, more like price gouging, to help pay for the building. Shameless explotation of the dental profession. They're in the business for the $$$, obviously. Not for the care of those in need.

I've been a patient at Johnston Dental for almost five years now, and I'm so glad that I am. At this point, they're my friends now, and I look forward to seeing them when I have to go in. Everyone is great, I've seen a number of the hygienists, and all were great. Chelsea is my main girl now, and she's just a ball of fun. :) I know tons of the assistants, and they know who I am without looking at my chart too. I've seen every dentist there, and I don't have a bad thing to say about any. I've seen Dr. Matt the most, and he's just the best. His positivity is infectious, and his kindness is endless. I last saw Dr. Matt about a week ago. It would sound over the top if I said it was a life changing experience, but it truly was. I've been missing two of my front teeth for over a decade. I've always been very ashamed of it, and I've tried so hard to hide them when I talk to anyone. Eating in restaurants was a special kind of torture because I thought everyone could see them. Also, for the last year, I've been working at a job with a good amount of public speaking involved. When I was talking to the groups of people, even though I was facing towards them to speak, I couldn't look at them for more than a second or two at a time because I was panicking inside, and had to look away so I couldn't see if they were looking at my teeth. Dr. Matt helped me to get implants put in, and he did the last step last week. This last week at work, I've felt like a different person. When speaking to the groups, I'll start to go into panic mode, and then remember that I'm not missing my teeth anymore! The people don't know, and I don't have to be ashamed of myself. So yes, Dr. Matt has changed my life, and I'll be forever grateful. Thank you Dr. Matt!

I love this place. State of the art. Everyone is so nice. Keisha the hygienist was so friendly and put me at ease. My teeth have never been so clean. Dr Shane found decay around a decades old filling They were able to fit me in and get it done right then! Great experience.

When I retired and moved back to Grants Pass in 2019, finding a new dentist was something I got on to right away, I visited websites and read reviews and choose Johnston Dental Care and know that was the right choice. Besides their office being aesthetically beautiful and calming environment, the front desk staff is welcoming and professional, making eye-contact and greeting you immediately upon arrival. My hygienist is thorough and I like the continuity of having the same hygienist who knows my mouth and ongoing issues. She even remembers my 2 cats and we sometimes talk about their dental care, too, as I had a career as a veterinary technician and took them to veterinary dental specialists. I see them twice a year for cleanings and have had some old fillings replaced and am currently going through having 2 dental implants, compounded by the issue of severe bone loss as they were next to each other, so was referred to a dental surgeon and will be having the crowns done with Dr Shane. Dr Shane is my dentist and he always takes the time to explain any problems and treatment options, I never feel rushed at my visits and this may sound impossible at a dentist visit, but being there is actually a relaxing experience because of the caring staff and environment.

Dr Shane and his Assistant Gara are the perfect team! They are both impeccable in describing the process (to leave you feeling you are in good hands) and in execution!! An added plus is they use and explain the benefits of the latest technology. Most of it visually! Dr Shane has an artistic flare coupled with a steady hand so by the time they are done, you get the sense you have your original tooth back and a better bite than the one you had before!

I was new to the area and went to Johnston Dental Care after calling around comparing prices. They weren't the cheapest. They weren't the most expensive but after comparing offices around town, I felt like they were the best value. Their building is GORGEOUS! They have all of the latest technology and everyone was so nice and helpful! My hygienist was awesome and the doctor was compassionate. After my exam, I was given a treatment plan with a breakdown of my portion and the insurance estimate. I'm excited to get the work done after a long break during COVID. Highly recommend. I had an incredible experience!

I had an abscessed tooth went in was told my portion would be $212 and I paid that not a problem got the final bill and I owe them another $268 because my insurance didn't cover what they thought it would I thought it was their job to verify this cost. instead I'm almost $500 out of pocket after the insurance paid. I'm just very disappointed won't be going back

Although I haven't been there in a few years...I was pleasantly surprised when, at the end of the day of my procedure Dr. Matt called me himself to ask how I was and how did my mouth feel! I never known or heard of a dentist/doctor doing this!

Best dentist office in all of Oregon. Helpful friendly staff, gentle kind dentist's. The most painless teeth cleaning. Affordable payment plans with no interest if paid off in 3 months. My dentist personally calls after working on my teeth to check in! You can't beat this office. More businesses need to be trained how to treat their customers like Johnston Dental

I've never loved the dentist until we moved to GP and I started seeing Dr Matt. I've been a patient for 13 years and an employee now for 1 year and I absolutely love this dental office! I love that my kids have had nothing but positive experiences going to the dentist and aren't scared to death like I was, growing up. I have always appreciated the kind, comfortable atmosphere and staff. It's the best!

Hands down, the best dental office I have ever been to; I mean if I'm going to have my teeth drilled into, it might as well be at a great place. The office is impeccably clean, and the hygienist got the cleaning done quickly and carefully. The doctors are friendly and caring, and I appreciated that they didn't push any treatment on me, they gave me options to take care of my cavities instead of trying to get me to "get it done now." Also, Doctor Matt had an amazing approach to helping my young daughter feel comfortable and calm for her first cavity fix, that was amazing, thanks for the balloon animal! Friendly staff, clean office, practical doctors...why would I go anywhere else?
