I love being a Dentist. Every day I feel rewarded to have made a difference in my patient's lives.Overthe past 26 years, I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, and the friendships that I've built with my patients and their families are one in a million. It has always been my focus to make each patient feel at-home when they come to me for treatment; and, I work hard to give my patients the attention they deserve
My formal education in dentistry has provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge and experience. I graduated from the University of Louisiana Lafayette in 1972 with my Bachelors degree in Business Administration. My Doctorate of Dental Surgery was earned at the Louisiana State University as well.
By regularly participating in continuing education, I am able to stay current on the latest technology and dental treatments. My patients deserve the best, and continuing education allows me to provide my patients with more options and better results. I participate in numerous continuing education classes every year, far exceeding the required amount. I also hold certifications with the Academy of Laser Dentistry and the American Orthodontic Society.
I am truly blessed to live and work in such a wonderful community here in New Orleans. I enjoy getting to know my patients and their families, and it is always such an honor to know that I have made a difference in so many of many of my patients lives. I couldnt ask for a better job or for a better group of people to be sharing their smiles with me. I look forward to working with you.
Dr. Bear grew up in the community he now serves. He loves New Orleans and the opportunity to help its people on a daily basis. He and his staff treat each patient like a true neighbor, whether that means making the dental care experience as comfortable as possible or just having a chat about yesterday's Saints game. Dr. Bear was also one of the first dental care professionals to return to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. He and his team are dedicated to this city and the health of everyone here.
Many general dental practices limit themselves to simple, routine treatments such as cleanings, fillings, and teeth whitening. West Jefferson Dental Center offers many advanced specialties. Patients come to see us for extractions, dental implants, endodontic therapy, and corrective treatment with Invisalign. We pride ourselves in providing more services under one roof for the convenience of our patients.
For those complex dental and orthodontic care needs that West Jefferson Dental Center is not fully equipped to address, Dr. Bear is happy to open his extensive network of health care professionals to all patients. Dr. Bear's history in our community has kept him in contact with some of the best dentists, orthodontists, and doctors in the area.

My husband just came home from a cleaning and they hygienist did a great job. She was not only very friendly and pleasant but very thorough. Dr Bear was professional. Great experience.

Dr Bear and his staff always go the extra step to make my visits run smoothly. I've had dental implants, crowns, and general dental care taken care of with no pain or discomfort. If you are looking for a dentist that can take care of all your dental work, this is the place to go!

Johnny Bear is the most knowledgeable dentist I've come across. Both he and his staff at West Jefferson Dental take the time to listen to you and are very personable. The best thing about him is how he doesn't take a one-size-fits all approach to people. I know this because I have loved ones who go to his clinic as well, and he takes into account personal factors such as cigarette smoking, diet and snoring. He's one of the most holistic dentists I've ever met, and I've met a lot, particularly after a really bad experience at NOLA Dental Studio in Kenner, where the dentist there actually gave me fillings I never should have gotten, according to two other dentists. I've had to have extra dental work to repair what was done. So I can compare Bear's abilities to the dentist I saw right after the nightmarish experience, who was still pretty good. When I moved recently, I took a family member's recommendation to go to West Jefferson Dental. I am so glad I did. If the nightmarish dentist's report card was an F--, and the dentist I saw right after her was a B+, then Johnny Bear is more like an A++. If you have to do anything involving fillings, he is definitely the person to see. Before this, I had sadly come to accept that, as a result of the bad / faulty / unnecessary fillings, I would just have to live with my mouth not feeling like my mouth; that I'd have to live with a few more headaches, a bite that felt "off," stop eating crunchy foods like carrots, and would have to deal with incapacitating anesthesia every time I had work done on them. I had no idea, until now, that anesthesia could be so painless. With that nightmare dentist I had to go back about six times, each time unsuccessfully for a "bite adjustment" (until the last time when Rebecca Blum threatened to call the police on my Mom--no kidding--who is one of the nicest people you could meet and was just standing there in the waiting room), and each time was a nightmare. With the dentist I saw right after her, I had to go back a couple times also, even though he was pretty good (and compared to the nightmare dentist, stellar). There was no going back after Bear worked on the fillings. Plus, it was relatively painless and my mouth feels like my mouth again. No "bite adjustments" and no headaches. I had gone my whole life without cavities or any dental problems up until I made the mistake, a few years ago, of trusting the wrong "professional." There's no undoing that mistake. What I can do, though, in addition to warning people about the bad dentists, is to also get the word out about who the good dentists really are. Johnny Bear is the best of the best.

I'm anxious about going to a dentist, a doctor, or any medical procedure but the staff at Dr. Bear's practice were professional, courteous, and most important to me, very friendly and calming. I went in for a basic cleaning and my hygienist was personable and even funny! Dr. Bear has an excellent chairside manner. I will definitely be referring my friends and family to this dental center.
