Dr. John Highsmith is a Phi Beta Kappa and Salutatorian graduate of Davidson College. He earned his dental degree from the University of North Carolina (go Heels!). Following a residency at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, he pursued additional training in dental implants and cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Highsmith is one of only five accredited members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in North Carolina, a Diplomate of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), and a fellow in the Misch Implant Institute. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Western NC Dental Society, and the NC Dental Society. Dr. Highsmith has taken many continuing education courses at LVI, the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Education. From 2006 to 2014, Dr. Highsmith was a clinical instructor at LVI, helping teach other dentists cutting edge techniques for cosmetic and functional dentistry.
Although the minimum hours of continuing education to maintain a North Carolina Dental License is only 15 hours a year, Dr. Highsmith regularly takes 200 to 250 hours a year, keeping up with the latest cutting edge techniques and advancements in dentistry, to ensure you the very best for your smile, bite, and oral health.
Dr. Sylvia Jernigan is a graduate of both the Medical University of Lodz in Poland and the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine where she earned her two awards: one for Excellence in Comprehensive Care and another for Excellence in Practice Management. She also received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award. For over a decade, shes been working in dentistry, assisting with some of the most advanced yet gentle treatments available in our area.
Much like Dr. Highsmith, Dr. Jernigan is also an avid learner interested in the artful, cosmetic side of being a dentist in Clyde. Shes spent many extra hours of continuing education and training over the last few years and is now a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. This is where dentists from all over the world come to learn about how new discoveries and changes in both technology and cosmetic dentistry can help dentists like Dr. Highsmith and Dr. Jernigan truly transform a patients smile. Dr. Jernigan has also completed additional training from the Dawson Dental Academy, Pankey Institute, Spears Education, and the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Jernigan also has training in providing effective Invisalign orthodontics. Shes previously worked to help keep the public healthy as a part of the Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island Dental Clinic, providing services to patients without a way to access quality care. In her spare time, Dr. Jernigan enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, going hiking, cooking, and reading.

I enjoy the close-knit atmosphere of our dental team, who all strive for a common goal: To always provide our patients with optimal dental health. Ive been married to Robbie since 1997, and we have a beautiful daughter, Emily.

My husband went to Dr. Highsmith to get his dentures and he was very pleased with the service and Dr.Highsmith. I was pleased with the front desk staff; they were polite and professional. The assistant in the exam room was friendly and did her work effectively and efficiently. Dr. Jernigan was also friendly and very professional and very straight forward about what I needed done. I have another appointment!

Excellent Professional office, everyone is very friendly and caring. Dr. Highsmith shows genuine interest in providing excellent care. Dr. Highsmith listens to you and you are never rushed. Dr. Highsmith explains the process well and sure pays attention to details. He always ask how I was doing during procedures. Very pleased with the work he did and would not hesitate to recommend him to friends and family. Can't say enough about how pleased I am!

Dr Highsmith is the best. He is professional, skillful, easy going and funny, so he puts you at ease. That's important to this dental coward. He also gives the most painless deadening shots of any dentists I've had over the course of my long life. Staff is friendly and nice and the facility is beautiful both inside and out. Office staff was professional and compassionate to our stressful situation! Dr. Highsmith is awesome! He gave our teenage daughter ( missing both lateral incisors!!!) a beautiful smile with functionality so she can eat almost anything without worry! So thankful! Highly recommend!!

Having practiced dentistry for over 40 years before my recent retirement, I felt uniquely positioned to evaluate the quality of esthetic cases completed by many different dentists. When it became apparent that I needed to replace some older front crowns in my own mouth, I spoke with Dr. John about providing the treatment since I trusted his opinion. His suggestion to do a more complete esthetic makeover turned out to be spot on. The result for me was a natural-looking, comfortable and amazing new smile. I am very pleased with the result as well as the treatment recommendations. Dr. John has been a trusted colleague and a valued friend for over 30 years. His knowledge of cosmetic (as well as implant-based) dentistry is unsurpassed and he constantly stays abreast of the latest advances in dental treatment. Excellent care from every standpoint. Dr. Highsmith is cutting edge in his technique and his current knowledge and tools. I had all of my teeth removed and experienced no post operative pain! I attribute this to both excellent technique plus use of platellate rich fibrin (PRF) and ozone applied to each socket post extraction. This is cutting edge dentistry.and it defines his office.

I found that Dr.Highsmith takes time to explain all the procedures. He explains all the pros and cons of the treatment so that I could make an independent judgment. His staff is also extremely helpful. Dr. Highsmith has a great rapport with his assistant and hygienist and they work very well together. I had 6 beautiful front crowns and implants done.They look so natural and I cannot stop smiling. The whole process was smooth. I highly recommend the office of Dr Highsmith for any and all of your dental care.

I love this Dentist Office. The Staff are exceptional, the treatment is top of the line, my Hygienist is the BEST!! I would recommend them any time. I have had some terrible, anxiety-inducing times with the Tribal dentists and it wasn't an easy feat for me to go to the dentist once again. Now, I am a true believer in GOODNESS, KINDNESS, and overall the BEST treatment I have ever received. So shout out to this entire staff!!!

So I made myself an appointment, I told myself I would start taking better care of myself now that my children have reached adult ages. I honestly didn't think there was any chance for me to have a smile that I didn't hide, I didn't think I could afford it most of all and thought what's the point since I have so much to fix I mine as well get dentures. Well let me tell you about my life changing experience yesterday. So not only did I leave with beautiful smile I didn't think was possible it's actually affordable (trust me I've been to 4 diff consultations spent over $600) just to return back to Dr.Highsmith bc he was the only place affordable and could save my tooth. It is absolutely unbelievable what he did with this tooth in the front of my mouth. Only thing now is reminding myself I don't have to hide my smile anymore. Every single person I saw yesterday couldn't get over how much more confident and happy I was. I asked my own mama which tooth did I get fixed and she couldn't even tell lol. It's priceless to me to be able to look in the mirror this morning and feel somewhat beautiful all bc of getting one tooth fixed :-) can't wait to go back and get the rest of my mouth fixed. Oh and I have extreme anxiety and they helped me every step of the way to feel comfortable.

My teeth cleaning appointment began promptly at 8, and I was out the door at 8:30... and my tech was wonderful! Dr. Highsmith and his office staff are wonderful, helpful, and thorough!!!
