We encourage all patients to recognize the following common symptoms of gum disease so that we can take steps to eradicate an infection in the mouth and preserve your oral health. Neglecting to proceed with treatment can cause significant gum and tooth damage, and may even lead to tooth loss.

You may develop bad breath if you have an infection in the mouth, eat certain foods regularly or if you have a chronic illness. Practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day can prevent bad breath. We also encourage patients to stop using tobacco products. Persistent bad breath may indicative of a progressing infection.

Your gums may start to pull away from the teeth when you have an infection such as gum disease. Gum recession may also occur when you grind and clench your teeth regularly, or if you have crooked teeth. You can prevent gum recession by getting treatment for gum disease, eating a healthy diet and practicing good oral hygiene.

If you notice your teeth are becoming loose or are starting to shift, you may have an underlying infection that is destroying your gum tissue and bone. Gum disease can wear down the gum and bone tissue to the point that they can no longer support the teeth. Once the teeth become loose, they are at risk of falling out or having to be extracted.

When your gums bleed readily when you brush or floss your teeth, or after you eat certain foods, you may have infected gums. Bleeding gums are one of the signs of gum disease and need to be taken seriously. If your gums are sore, inflamed or very sensitive, this can also be a red flag that there is an active infection in your mouth.

He teaches and lectures throughout the world and spends between 50 to 70 days per year on the road in 33 different countries. Dr. Kim participates in a teaching program in Mexico for surgical training four to six times per year and leads local study clubs.

Digital x-rays help us capture high quality images of your teeth and jaw within minutes. Digital x-rays produce less exposure to radiation than traditional x-rays and can be viewed on a computer monitor. Dr. Kim can zoom-in on areas of concern to get a closer look and easily show you the areas that may need treatment.

We use T-Scan technology to diagnose bite problems digitally. The T-Scan system makes it very easy for us to detect your bite issues and make precise adjustments. An unstable bite can cause pain, broken tooth restorations, gum disease and TMJ disorder.

We use the Oral ID system for oral cancer screenings at our practice. Oral cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States and can also be one of the most deadly forms of cancer if it is not detected early. Oral ID makes use of fluorescence technology to detect abnormal oral tissue in its earliest stages. You will need to use a special mouth rinse in our office before exposing the area to a fluorescent light to detect cancerous and abnormal tissue.

We use 3D dental planning software to create a virtual treatment plan when placing dental implants or performing other procedures. These software systems can help us identify anatomical structures and make it easier to communicate to you exactly what we will do during the procedure.

Dr. Jin Y. Kim was born in Korea. He grew up in Sydney Australia, where he attended the University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry from 1982-1986. He furthered his education with an advanced degree in pathology, which was obtained from the Medical School of University of Sydney, graduating with honors in 1988. From 1989-1991, he served as a Christian missionary in his native Korea, having been deployed by the Uniting Church of Australia. Dr. Kim then settled in California, where he completed master degrees in public health and oral biology, and a three-year specialty residency training program in periodontics and implant surgery at UCLA School of Dentistry. In 1999 he became board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), and in 2001, became Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). Fellowship in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry was earned in 2007, and Dr. Kim also became board-certified by the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), in 2006, making him a unique and rare dual board-certified specialist in the nation.

Dr. Kim is married to Dr. Connie Kyung Choi, a dentist trained at USC School of Dentistry, and practicing general dentistry in the city of El Monte, California. They are the proud parents of three boys, Justin, Stanley, and Cameron. He enthusiastically participates in boy scout activities, having served as cub master for Pack 1238 in Fullerton, and currently as an assistant scoutmaster at Troop 93 in Fullerton, California.
