This practice was founded by Dr. Scott Henricksen in 1980. Dr. Jayna Sekijima joined as the associate dentist in 2014 and took over the practice in 2020 when Dr. Henricksen retired. Dr. Sekijima and the staff continue to provide an exceptional level of quality of care and quality of experience.
As stated on our homepage, our goal is that our patients preserve their dentition in health for the rest of their lives, and that they be able to enjoy teeth that are trouble-free, pain-free, and fulfill their personal definition of attractive.
We believe that communication is paramount in achieving this. Should a dental problem arise, we will educate you about the issue occurring. We maintain a conservative treatment philosophy, but will review all realistic options to fix the problem, ranging from the most basic to the more complex. We will also discuss how to prevent future issues.
Our office is located in the Highland Park Place Medical-Dental Plaza at the intersection of North 182nd and Fremont Avenue N. in Shoreline, a convenient neighborhood location with tranquil surroundings and easy front door parking. Our up-to-date facility attests to our commitment of quality and excellence, with private treatment rooms, a pleasant, attractive ambiance, and state of the art technology.
About: Dr. Sekijima completed her undergraduate studies at University of Washington, and in 2013 she received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Graduating in the top of her class, she received the Presidents Award for superior scholastic attainment and active participation in the student community, as well as the Clinical Excellence Award for compassionate and quality patient care. She then made her way back to the PNW for her general practice residency with Swedish Medical Center.
Words from Dr. Sekijima: A career in this profession has been my aspiration since middle school. It is a great privilege to practice dentistry, and I am passionate about providing compassionate, quality dental care and am committed to excellence and lifelong learning. I believe that communication and partnership between dentist and patient, as well as active participation on both parts, can not only achieve oral health, but also empower patients to make oral health decisions that are right for them.
I count myself blessed not only to get to do what I do, but all the more so by the opportunity to further invest in our community. My husband and I both have strong ties to the area. My parents wanted to raise their family in the greater Seattle area where they and their parents were born and raised. Even closer to home, my husband, Jonathan, grew up in Lake Forest Park and is a Kings School alumnus. We happily set our own roots in Shoreline when we married, and are thankful to raise our son and daughter in our wonderful community. You may often find us playing at Hamlin Park, feeding the ducks at Log Boom Park, or enjoying the scenery, trains, rocks, and water at Richmond Beach. We are also big Disneyland fans (fanatics).
I got into dentistry because I loved my dentist growing up. After working as a dental assistant for 22 years, I made a natural transition to the front office position. What I enjoy about dentistry is getting to interact with people and getting to know patients. Specific to the front office role, I enjoy teaching patients about their dental benefits to hopefully remove some of the confusion and intimidation that can often surround dental insurance.
Living in the Pacific Northwest has always been a dream that my husband and I shared because of its unparalleled natural beauty. We moved to the area in 2015 from Boston, where I worked as a dental office manager for 10 years. What I enjoy about the front office position is being part of the dental team and providing support for the patients. The dental office is not always a place that people want to be, but I love being a smiling, supportive presence.
My husband and I have 2 young boys and we all love being outside. We love to hike, love to go on adventures, and love to do local traveling and go on ferry rides. We are enjoying everything that this area has to offer!
What I enjoy most about dental assisting is working with great people and growing relationships with patients. Knowing that my job helps improve self-confidence of others also gives me a great sense of accomplishment.
Outside of the office, I am busy raising my 3 kids. I like to enjoy life with my family, whatever that is, whether being out in our yard, going to the beach, or going to the park and enjoying the weather whenever it is nice!
I first became interested in the dental field as a kid because I really liked my hygienist. What I enjoy about dental assisting is the variety in challenges you can work on the same tooth a million times and it will be different each time. I also enjoy taking care of people and helping patients feel comfortable, since most often the dental office is not where they want to be!
Outside of work I like to hike, spend time with my dog and family, and travel. My dream travel destination is Germany. I took German in high school and fell in love with the culture and the beauty of the country.
I chose my career as a hygienist after a program in high school placed me in an internship in a very innovative, forward-looking and engaging dental office. I was off and running! Since becoming a hygienist I have been grateful to be involved in peoples quest for optimal health. I joined this team in 2015 and the laughter and camaraderie we share as a team here is also really valuable to me.
The beach is where youll find me in my spare time. My husband, Shannon, our golden doodle, Dusty, and I spend countless hours at the beach and hiking on Ebeys bluff. All you need is love and the beach.
My interest in dentistry stemmed out of my desire to work with and help people. Ive worked in private practice for most of my career, but after earning my masters in public health I also did work in the public health sector. One of the most fun parts about my job is getting to know people over the years. Its also fun seeing how people react to improvements in their oral health after weve worked together. Its a great feeling to work to benefit others.
I got into dental hygiene because I love people and getting to build relationships! In dentistry, we have the opportunity to see patients for a great span of their life, as well as to see generations of families. I also love the healthcare aspect of dentistry and being able to see people get better and healthier. The mouth is an avenue to the rest of your whole body, and I like to pay attention to the impact of oral health on overall health.
On a personal note, my husband and I have 3 wonderful kids and the cutest golden doodle dog. I am passionate about working out and staying healthy, and chasing them can certainly be considered part of my daily workout! Together, we love to travel and to get outside and go on walks.
I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare, and the dental field attracted me because I always had positive experiences at my dentist and orthodontist offices growing up. I enjoy getting to know my patients, assisting them in meeting their oral health goals, and helping them feel comfortable and at ease in the dental chair! In addition, private practice offers a warm family atmosphere to the patients and the dental staff that can be difficultto find in other work environments.
Outside of work I enjoy traveling, visits to Cannon Beach, working out at my local fitness center, brushing up on my rusty piano and flute skills (or lack thereof), dining in Edmonds restaurants, and family time on my parents property in the little town of Lynden.
I enjoy my position in this office because I get to help others and I enjoy being part of this team. In addition to being the sterilization tech, I am also trained as a dental assistant and graduated from my dental assisting program in 2010. I have been interested in dentistry since high school because its a field where you help people and help them to have a better smile and feel confident in themselves.
At Jayna Sekijima DDS, we want our patients to enjoy the best dentistry has to offer. In dentistry, new materials, techniques, and technology are constantly introduced. We carefully incorporate these new practices into our office as they become available, and as we are convinced they represent a true improvement over what came before.
All throughout the year we take continuing education courses and workshops, read dental journals, and collaborate with our colleagues to ensure the dentistry we provide is scientifically and clinically supported. Some of the courses and workshops we have taken in the last year or so include cutting edge material in decay prevention, periodontics, new esthetic filling techniques, oral cancer detection, TMJ and bite treatment, numerous childrens dentistry topics, instrument sterilization, implants, and much more.
One of our favorite pieces of technology is our intraoral camera. We use these regularly for documentation and to better communicate with you what we see in your mouth. We also offer digital x-rays, which allow less radiation exposure. There are certainly additional aspects that we may discuss with you as we deem appropriate for your care.
