At Island Childrens Dentistry, you can be confident in the pediatric and orthodontic dental practice you have chosen for your child. Drs. Gema Island and Allison Lonneman each have specialized training in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Bob Marzban is an orthodontist who is trained in malocclusions and dental crowding.
Dr. Gema Island is a pediatric dentist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Island founded Island Childrens Dentistry in 2014. Shes dedicated to providing the highest quality of dental care in the most gentle, positive, and enthusiastic manner possible.
Dr. Island combines her academic background, research experience, clinical skills, and mothers touch to deliver the best to her little patients and their parents. Dr. Gema obtained her Board certification in 2006 and did 3 years of residency at TUFTS University in Boston, MA. While at TUFTS, she received the prestigious Bates Award for her postgraduate research, and, in her senior year, she won the Aesthetic Dentistry Challenge. She has published articles in peer-review journals and has lectured nationally and internationally on different topics and participated in the Infant Oral Care and Prevention of Early Childhood Caries Project at San Francisco General Hospital.
Island Childrens Dentistry is committed to delivering the highest quality of care using the latest techniques and equipment. Dr. Gema has a special permit by the State of Virginia to provide conscious and IV sedation to her anxious patients, including Laughing Gas and Wand Anesthesia, along with Laser Dentistry, to reduce pain. As a mom and dentist minimizing fears and putting a smile on a childs face brings her joy. Dr. Gema is originally from Mexico, is married, and has two kids, Becky and Eddie. When shes not taking good care of her little patients, she enjoys playing tennis, going to the ballet, and traveling.
Dr. Allie Lonneman is originally from Kentucky. She was a member of the University of Kentucky Division I Womens Soccer team. In her time as a Division I athlete, she earned her bachelors degree in Biology. She continued her education at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry where she obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Allie is a pediatric dentist, a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Virginia Dental Association, and Northern Virginia Dental Society. Her favorite part about being a pediatric dentist is helping children identify and overcome their fears. Dr. Allies goal is to make every childs experience a positive one and to instill healthy oral habits that will last a lifetime. She is excited to join the team at Island Childrens Dentistry and continue to deliver the highest quality of care alongside Dr. Island.
Dr. Allie is excited to call Virginia home and be close to her family and friends. She is an active member of the Northern Virginia community. On weekends, Dr. Allie loves to volunteer for the TOPSoccer Organization, a program for young athletes with special needs. She loves to try new restaurants and do anything outdoors. She enjoys playing soccer, as well as cooking and baking.
Dr. Marzban started with dental school at the Medical College of Virginia where he earned his DDS Summa Cum Laude. A month after graduation, he moved away from Virginia for the first time since early childhood for his residency in Orthodontics. The University of Connecticut gave him a Masters in Dental Science, a specialty degree in Orthodontics, and a primo seat for college basketball games.
Despite all that, Dr. Marzban believes that the most important factor for acceptance as a parent is actually whether or not he sings in an embarrassing way while taking the kids to swim practice with their friends.

Awesome experience and top-notch service! I had brought in my 5-year-old to get some cavities filled, and at first, I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure how my daughter would do. I can only say that Dr. Lonneman and the team did an excellent job. They made everything fun and kid-friendly for my daughter and made the entire experience non-stressful. I would highly recommend Dr. Lonneman and the team. THANK YOU for making the entire experience fantastic for both my daughter and myself.

Today was our first appointment with Dr. Island and she was great! We have a 4-month old baby and we were really worried about her lip tie interfering with her feeding. She carefully examined our baby and said that everything is fine!! Her honest and professional advice brought us the confidence and peace of mind that we needed as parents! My kids (ages 3 and 5) countdown the days until their dental appointments. They love it here. The staff and Dr. Island are wonderful and make the whole experience fun and pleasant for the little ones and parents. My 3 year old's first visit to the dentist was after a traumatic mouth injury. I was worried she wouldn't have a good experience but quite the opposite she kept asking me to bring her back. I am so grateful to have found a wonderful pediatric dentist.

Every moment of this experience was excellent for myself as a parent, and for my 9-year-old son! Dr. Island, Melissa, and her team are remarkable. They made us feel safe and cared for the entire time. My son had an extraction and a filling done and left SMILING. The team from start to finish was amazing.

This practice is just impressive. My son had a cavity with an abscess and Dr. Island was meticulous in his treatment. He ended up getting the tooth extracted which was an impressively "pleasant" experience both for my son and myself. I am from a family of healthcare professionals, including another dentist, and I can attest to Dr. Island's knowledge, expertise, skill, and trustworthiness in her recommendations for treatment. We are so happy to have found Dr. Island. After a not so great experience with a previous pediatric dentist, our pediatrician recommended Dr. Island. I have 3 kids, age 1, 3, and 4 and the entire staff made each of the kids feel very welcome and comfortable. After having a previously poor dental experience, Dr. Island's team impressed me with how they were able to earn the kids' trust. I was pleased by this most of all in addition to the cleanliness of the practice, the professionalism of the front desk staff, and the friendliness of Dr. Island herself. I feel like I got to know her after just a few visits. She not only is brilliant, but very down to earth, kind, and sweet. We're very thankful to have found Dr. Island's practice for our family!

My 3 kids have had excellent care from Dr Island and Dr Marzban, and the staff is so caring and accommodating! My kids have absolutely great associations with the dentist and orthodontist - no fear whatsoever. And I always appreciate how easy the whole experience is!

I would recommend this practice to all parents! Dr. Island and her team were amazing at walking me through my sons very extensive treatment. From Melissa who was great coordinating with my schedule and explaining the whole process to me, to Cindy and Jose who were very helpful in the front and very attentive during some difficult times. The assistants, Julia and Olga kept me updated during the sedation. This is a very professional, organized and friendly team. As a first time mom I was very afraid and nervous but Dr. Island and Dr. Tran, the anesthesiologist, made me feel at ease and answered all of my concerns, they even checked up with us after it was over. The work done on my sons teeth looks spectacular and I am very happy with the results. Dr. Island is an amazing pediatric dentist and I can't wait to come back for his 6 month check ups in the future!

Dr. Island is wonderful, gentle, and meticulous. She was great with my autistic son. **UPDATE** Another great visit, this time for a relatively big procedure. I always trust that Dr. Island will listen to our concerns and perform only the necessary treatments. (Many other dentists are usually in a hurry, will promote doing things that can either wait until after baby teeth come out, or unnecessarily sedate to make their jobs easier). Dr. Island is careful, conservative, honest, and really just top notch. She has a calm demeanor, which really effects my kids positively. And with my son, who can neither have sedation nor nitrous, Dr. Island and her staff expertly performed an extraction with only Lidocain. The procedure went smoothly, quickly and my son was totally un-phased by the experience...because it was that good. I bring both my children to her. After trying three other pediatric dentists in Vienna these past 8 years, we will look no further. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The dentist and hygienist are kind and helpful, but the administrative staff, either out of ignorance or malice, misrepresent the insurance company programs they are in network with. Triple check that they actually are in network with your insurer, or you could get stuck paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

This is hands down the best Pediatric Dental Practice in the area! I know this both as a mother and as a pediatrician who refers patients here. Recently, our child suffered a fall with potential dental implications and Dr. Island and her team squeezed her in emergently and went above and beyond to make sure our child's teeth were safe and healthy. Dr. Island was also able to put me and my family at ease during a very stressful moment. Thank you for all that you do!

My daughter has gone there since she was 2 years old. Dr. Allie is the best with kids. My daughter has been always tensed and had an anxiety whenever she meets dentist but not with Dr. Allie. She can whisper into her ears and makes everything go super easy and fast. I will highly recommend anyone with kids that do not like dentists.

We love Island Children's Dentistry, driving past probably a dozen other pediatric practices on our way there. Everyone at Island is positive, communicative and professional. Appointments are easily to schedule. They run on time. The front desk is flawless at working with insurance issues - and they're always 100% upfront about costs. I have never felt "up sold" or pressured at Island. Neither of my kids are particularly comfortable at the dentist - the youngest is downright fearful. The staff at Island Children's Dentistry never rush, lose their patience or give up. They adjust, coax and push through with empathy to make sure my kids get the dental care they need and have a positive experience. The parking is free (for up to 2hrs). The office is clean and bright. COVID protocols are sensible but not suffocating. Communication is stellar. They've always been on time for our appointments. A wide array of insurance plans are accepted. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Attention: Parents who have kids with special needs - Consider calling up Dr. Island for your kid's dental needs! Dr. Island and her x-ray tech Julia were amazing and successful in helping my son get his first useable x-rays completed! Their panoramic x-ray machine, their coaching and patience, their attentive intake team, and their genuine warmth all helped in making it a truly successful day in Tysons Corner. We've gone to 2 other dentists who were *not* able to work with G to stay still for his x-rays (and it's a struggle for kids with autism and ADHD). I am so deeply grateful for Dr. Island and her entire team. Thank you!!!

Dr. Island and her staff are always kind, professional, courteous and on time. The office atmosphere makes the experience fun and welcoming, and the kids love coming to the office. The care provided by the team is exceptional, informative and proactive. I had a child who needed dental care under IV sedation due to his age. I was so nervous for many reasons: he needed some urgent dental care, which is a lot for a young child to go through, and I was scared of the IV sedation process. However, Dr. Island/Dr. Allie and her staff made me feel at ease. Melissa the office manager was so helpful in coordinating everything and explaining everything. No one pushed anything or recommended doing something I was not comfortable with. Dr. Tran the anesthesiologist personally called me and answered all of my questions and walked me through the process. The staff was so supportive while I was there, and checked in with me multiple times during his procedure to help me feel at ease. I am a dental hygienist, so I know the dental business, and this practice is very thorough and offers outstanding care.

I liked this place until I had to deal with the person in charge of insurance. WHAT A MESS! Turns out my sons last two appointments weren't covered at all because they switched from being an in-network provider to out of network provider. The lady in charge of insurance was basically yelling at me in front of everyone (who were all staring) that I had to pay for everything that day and didn't want to give me the chance to talk to my insurance provider myself. It was very uncomfortable and embarrassing. I feel like they should have let me know that they were no long an in-network provider beforehand.
