Dr. Richard Rasmussen Jr. is one of the most experienced periodontal surgeons in the world having placed tens of thousands of implants since 1982 along with advanced soft and hard tissue reconstruction procedures. Patients turn to Dr. Rasmussen for state-of-the-art treatment in a warm, caring environment, and appreciate his thoroughness in explaining the range of options available to achieve the best possible results. Dr. Rasmussen is certified to provide Intravenous Conscious Sedation and has been consistently voted Tampas #1 Periodontal Practice by colleagues.
He pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Buffalo, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry followed by his Doctor of Dental Surgery with Honors. He completed post-graduate training at the University of Alabamas Post Graduate Periodontal Residency program, a hospital based program focused on interdisciplinary care and served as Chief Resident in his senior year.
Dr. Rasmussen is one of the few practicing clinicians who trained directly under Professor Per Ingvar Brnemark, the Father of Dental Implantology and is the only periodontist to have trained in craniofacial surgery with Professor Anders Tjellstrom. He was an early adopter in computer guided surgery as well as advanced bone reconstruction, incorporating autogenous bone blocks as well as titanium mesh. Soft tissue procedures include autogenous as well as autologous grafts and the Pinhole Surgical Technique.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Rasmussen spends many hours teaching and is the director of the Seattle Study Club - Tampa and the Dental Business Study Club. Our focus is on restoratively driven comprehensive care but we always welcome patients with specific needs.
One of Dr. Rasmussen's primary professional interests is dental implants. He has authored articles on the research and developments in this area for The Journal of Dental Research, The Journal of the Florida Dental Association, Implantology Update, and The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery. Additionally, he authored a textbook entitled The Brnemark System of Oral Reconstruction: A Clinical Atlas. Dr. Rasmussen is a frequent lecturer and has been interviewed on radio and television discussing the subjects of periodontics and implantology.

In addition to the four years of dental school, we spend an additional three years in an intensive residency program involving sedation training with anesthesiologists, development of a high degree of surgical skill, as well as working interactively with general dentists and other specialists and medical professionals. In essence, periodontists spend a minimum of 11 years in training!
The additional training beyond dental school involves treating many patients with the 'best of the best' as teachers and professors. By working with a periodontist, you are ensured the most effective treatment for your condition, as we spend an extensive amount of time practicing 'evidence-based' treatment for our patients. There are certainly a number of treatment modalities available, from deep cleanings, surgery, laser therapy, etc. You should rely on the experience of somebody that has all tools available to them and can make the best solution to fit you - not a one-size-fits-all approach. Although general dentists often treat the more mild forms of periodontal disease (commonly known as gingivitis) we specialize in the treatment of all forms of periodontal disease, which includes the more advanced forms of the disease. Unfortunately, many patients don't realize they even have periodontal disease unless they are told by another dental professional, as many patients do not feel any symptoms at all.
We specialize in all periodontal conditions, which includes treatment of both gum recession and smile makeovers. We will analyze the entire smile and overall condition of the gum tissue, and discuss all options with you. If there is an issue around your natural teeth, we have the experience and treatment options available to help.
In addition to treatment of natural teeth, we are specialists in dental implants as well. In fact, Dr. Rasmussen authored a textbook on dental implants, and has placed over 22,000 of them. He is one of the most experienced clinicians in the world in the realm of dental implants, and as such he has lectured both nationally as well as internationally on the topic.

Amazing experience. Dr. Rasmussen was recommended to me by my Ortho and I have to say that he is a PHENOMENAL DOCTOR!!! I had surgery for an implant and I was extremely nervous and him and his staff made sure I felt so comfortable and thanks to that, I made it through surgery with no complications whatsoever. He has a very gentle and calming voice and just to hear that voice and the way he wanted to make sure that I felt good every step of the way and letting me know what was happening is what made me feel more at ease during the whole procedure. His staff is super friendly and welcoming I really enjoyed that as well. Everything is very well kept, clean and sterilized. My recovery process was not bad at all. It was way better then what I expected it to be. Barely any pain or bleeding whatsoever. Oh and another thing was that the doctor personally texted me that evening (same day of surgery) to know how everything was and to know how I was feeling after surgery. Never have I seen anyone do this, or care this much!!! Wow they really do go above and beyond. Overall I one thousand percent recommend this clinic to anyone needing implant surgery. Thank you so much for everything again! Great team!

I'm 25 years old and I will say that I was extremely nervous to have my surgery done. I wasn't sure what to expect with everything but I must say that my whole experience since day 1 was amazing. Dr Rasmussen III made me feel extremely comfortable with everything that would take place. He explained in detail exactly what he would be doing on surgery day and the areas he wanted to fix. He was awesome at answering any questions I had. The surgery went great and the recovery process was actually really easy for me. I had no problems with anything and my mouth healed up perfectly! We both thought there was a chance I would have to undergo a second surgery to cover all that we needed to but Dr Rasmussen did an excellent job of doing it in one shot! I would highly recommend him and his staff. They're all super friendly and made me feel comfortable each time I walked into the office.

Let me say the staff and Dr. Rasmussen Jr are phenomenal. He explained everything that he was going to do as well as the amount of time for the entire process for my daughter. On the same day of the surgery we saw immediately her smile was even more beautiful. By the two week follow up we could see all the healing was completed and my daughter no longer hid her smile. I cried tears of joy as a mother we want out children to be comfortable in her skin. This office gave my daughter confidence. Thank you!!

My experience at Implant & Periodontal Therapy - South Tampa is by far exceeded my expectations. The staff is kind, efficient and knowledgeable. I have a strong background for comparison. I knew going into my initial consultation with Dr. Richard Rasmussen that my particular case was complex as I had sought many opinions by specialists At this practice, they have the most wonderful staff specially Greg who navigate me before and after the procedure. My review is for those who are terrified of any dental work, as I am, to the point of overwhelmingly paralyzing fear, that prevented me from going to dentist for a very long time This negligence on my part resulted in a loss of bone structure, and almost irreversible damage to my teeth. The restoration required bone graft procedure, and I was certain that I would not be able to convince myself to go through this process. A consultation with Dr. Rasmussen has changed my mind. It did not remove fear completely, but lowered it enough for me to move forward. Dr. Rasmussen's ability to patiently explain every aspect of the process, and, most importantly, health benefits and health necessity of bone graft, provided me enough reason to build my courage for this procedure. The professionalism of Dr. Rasmussen, his staff, and extraordinary kindness in dealing with terrified patient, made the surgery itself uneventful, and recovery surprisingly straightforward. If you are debating dental surgery, I would absolutely recommend trying a consultation with Dr. Rasmussen. It may help with anxiety about dental surgeries, and a decision to move forward.
