I am a Chesterton native, having graduatedfrom Chesterton High School in 1984 before obtaining my undergraduate education from Wabash College. I received my dental education at Indiana University School of Dentistry, where I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1992. I also earned my Master of Science in dentistry there in 1994.

The field of orthodontics is constantly changing, with new treatments and technology appearing every day. I can say without a doubt that I dont treat patients the wayI did 20 years ago! I continue my education every year, easily surpassing the state requirements, by taking courses in all areas of orthodontic technology. Currently, I am occupied with the clinical applications of lasers for orthodontics, accelerated orthodontic techniques, and lingual orthodontics, and how they can improve my patients outcomes.

There is nothing Id rather do than work as an orthodontist. I enjoy the daily interactions I have with my patients and their families, especially getting to know about their schools, travels, and hobbies. I am also grateful for the true team mentality I have with my staff. We all work closely with each individual patient to make sure a beautiful, functional smile is achieved.

My team and I have worked together long enough to be able to anticipate one anothers needs. Thismakesfor an efficient, smooth-running office environment. Our patients needs are our number-one priority. That being said, we also genuinely enjoy spending time together and making each other laugh:something our patients love about us!

We recognize that all our patients are unique and deserve to receive orthodontic care that reflects their individual needs. Our experienced and talented team is committed to working with you and your family to create a comfortable, stress-free, and rewarding orthodontic experience every time you visit our practice.

I wanted to close some minor gaps that have become more pronounced as I age. During an Invisalign consultation, Dr. Hurst explained that I wasn't a good candidate because I had "a bully tooth" that would be too stubborn to move with plastic retainers, but that braces would be able to achieve the results. It wasn't the news I wanted, but he is the expert and I followed his advice. My dentist's price for Invisalign = $3,000. Braces at Hurst Orthodontics = $6,374 (incl ceramic uppers, 2+ yrs of check-ins, retainers, etc.) Appt #1: less than 10 minutes with a tech to insert spacers (which were unneeded because they couldn't band the molars - whoops). Appt #2: about 2 hours--including the banding-not-banding debacle--of which about 30 min was with Dr. Hurst, and 90 with a tech. Not counting the 45 min I waited or the last 15 minutes of paperwork, care instructions, and follow-up scheduling. Appt #3 (and final): Remove the braces just 31 days after their attachment. Dr. Hurst removed the brackets and (more or less) the adhesive in 20 min. Then a tech spent about 15 min scanning my mouth and taking photos for their records. FOR THESE 3 VISITS--REPRESENTING LESS THAN 3 HOURS OF "CHAIR TIME"--I PAID HURST ORTHODONTICS $2,744. In my opinion, 25% of the fee total ($1,618) would have been a reasonable amount for them to keep. I believe that still generously exceeds the time and material cost to Hurst. In my opinion, if they had charged 30% of the stated 2+ year fee, it would have seemed punitive. But 43%??? In my opinion, that is unsavory, outrageous, and disgraceful. There were red flags from the beginning -- I should have trusted my gut. I detected inflexibility and curtness with the office manager with the 1st phone call. I chalked it up to a rough day until she had that same edge in person. On two subsequent occasions she would respond to general inquiries about the potential of orthodontia to exacerbate bone loss (a documented phenomenon, therefore, a reasonable question) with swift defensiveness, as if I had suggested some sort of misconduct, though I had never even considered it much less implied it. Then, 16 days after the braces were attached, a bracket fell off a crown. I was frustrated because I had been adhering to an all-liquid diet and worried that this did not bode well for the road ahead. Worse, the office manager suggested that I wait NINETEEN days until my next appointment to get the bracket re-attached. Incredulous, I pushed back and was given an appointment 8 days later. Afraid the loose bracket may crack the crown or neighboring tooth in the interim, I cut it out myself and heaped gobs of wax over the exposed wire. I had also started wrapping cotton balls in first aid tape and wedging those in the back of my cheeks due to wires jutting out from the back end of the brackets, where wax wouldn't stick. I was suffering unusual headaches that didn't respond to OTC remedies. Nearly six months later - my teeth still click and clench like a nervous tick, looking for their natural place in my mouth which is gone. The top front teeth have shifted fully behind the bottom front, transitioning from a mild crossbite to a visible underbite that makes me sad every time I look in the mirror. These are some of the literal pain points that caused me to give up on the treatment and this practice altogether--not that anyone cared enough to ask what led to the decision. When I told the office manager I wanted to take the braces off rather than fixing the bracket, the only response was a request for an additional $855 for the removal. Um, no. But the kicker is that, during the removal, Dr. Hurst advised "we could probably close these gaps with clear aligners." He tried to sell me another treatment. The same treatment I had initially sought, that he had told me I wasn't a good candidate for. After keeping $2,744 - nearly the full cost of the Invisalign treatment I requested.. Shady. Appalling.

Their office is bright and open and the front office staff is very good at what they do. I've not done a lot of shopping around for pricing but they are pretty expensive.

Best place around. Front desk girls are ALWAYS so nice, accommodating, and Profesional. I honestly do not know how Dr. Hurst does it. We have NEVER had an issue (outside of business hours) that did not get fixed within that day if not within the hour! Everyone is so helpful and kind that works their and we have not had any issues even with scheduling. Wish my Doctors office was as happy efficient and had such good smiles!
