Welcome to Howard University Health Sciences and thank you for visiting our Web site. We hope that it provides the information that you are seeking and want to hear from you if you have suggestions about how we can make it even more useful to you.

As you may know, Howard University Health Sciences includes Howard University Hospital, our Faculty Practice Plan, the Louis B. Stokes Health Sciences Library, and our Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health, as well as several specialty institutes and centers. In these historic and groundbreaking institutions, we conduct the research, teaching, and clinical care that seek to eliminate health disparities and provide service to the most vulnerable among us.

We have spent much of the last year in a strategic planning process. That process was highly inclusive, with hundreds of faculty, staff, students, and other interested persons contributing their wisdom and insights. It resulted in a refreshed sense of what we do and who we are, a vision of the future we want to create, and a strategy for how we will get there.

It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with such a fine team of professionals as Howard University Health Sciences continues on our exciting journey. We hope that you will share that journey with us in some way.

The Howard University Health Sciences (HUHS) enterprise includes the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Since its inception, the HUHS has conferred over 28,300 doctoral and professional degrees to scientists and health care professionals, the majority whom are from underrepresented and disadvantaged populations.

To study at Howard University is choosing an institution that is experienced, dynamic, and diverse with a tradition of quality education since 1867 provided by the constant engagement of its faculty toward the students and their needs, and by its rich campus social and cultural life

Howard University Hospital is one of America's best hospitals. The rich tradition of leadership and service at Howard University Hospital (HUH) dates back to 1862. Housed in converted army barracks, it was initially called Freedmens Hospital and provided a refuge where ex-slaves received the medical care they were denied elsewhere.

In the late 1860s, Freedmens formed a partnership with the Howard University College of Medicine to train African-American medical professionals. Together the medical school and the hospital have served as a training ground for many of the nation's top African-American physicians.

Over the course of its 145-year history of providing the finest primary, secondary and tertiary health care services, Howard University Hospital has become one of the most comprehensive health care facilities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and designated a DC Level 1 Trauma Center. In April 2007, the Hospital ranked number one among selected area hospitals on 19 quality measures published by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

A private, nonprofit institution, HUH is the nation's only teaching hospital located on the campus of a historically Black university. It offers medical students a superior learning environment and opportunities to observe or participate in ground-breaking clinical and research work with professionals who are changing the face of health care. Washingtonian and Black Enterprise magazines have identified physicians affiliated with the hospital as leaders in a vast range of specialties.

The CARES team is comprised of Howard University Health Sciences employees representingthe Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, as well as the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library, Howard University Hospital, and the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan. CARES is committed to fostering a workplace culture that ensures excellence for all of our customers (patients, their families and guests, students, vendors and employees). CARES is founded on the Health Sciences Standards of Behavior: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, Service. Through consistent employee engagement and year-round training, CARES promotes these standards of behavior to ensure that our customers enjoy an extraordinary experience.

Health Sciences led a strategic planning process that took place close to three years ago. It was during this process that CARES came to be. HUHS strategic values were formally identified at that time as collaboration, accountability, respect, excellence and service. It quickly became obvious that when put in a specific order, the strategic values created the acronym CARES, perfectly matched to Howards mission to serve. And from that moment, CARES was born and has grown into the cultural experience that we all know it to be today.

I would put zero stars if it was an option. They didn't give my baby enough medicine when they pulled her tooth. Howard dentistry pulled my daughter teeth out her mouth a few years back. She was screaming like they were torching/ killing her, everytime I tried to come in they'd blocked the door. And say she was okay. It's was 5 of them in there with her They held her feet and hand down she was only 6 yrs old at the time. It was so heartbreaking to hear her screaming and kicking and fighting. I feel like I should have done more to stop them 5 yrs later she rather suffer through a tooth ache then go to the dentist all b/c she said she felt every inch of the pain they didn't numb her. She just telling me this the other day. I bust out in tears b/c I know I couldn't have went through that pain. They torched my baby and I remember her screams like it was yesterday and them locking and blocking the door way so I couldn't get to her the absolute worst dentistry I have ever been too I would not recommend anyone to bring their child to Howard dentistry.

(Translated by Google) Horrible customer service I have called many times for an appointment they never answer and if they do they have it waiting and waiting ... In the end I went personally and the lady who attends the front desk is a bitter lady and incidentally does not help with what one asks. I didn't make the appointment and I think I would never do anything in that place. It is the worst.

I always recommend the oral surgery dept at Howard, though I went years ago they did such a wonderful job that I was eating in no time, healed pretty quickly and it was really painless. I believe walk-ins were Tuesday's so I walked, was seen and left! Definitely didn't expect things to go so well-being as though I had to get my wisdoms pulled but I never even felt any pain!

In my opinion this practice is a nightmare to work with and Howard University should not allow them to use its name! HU has a strong and respected reputation and this practice tarnishes their name. As of today, and apparently for some time now (although they will not effectively communicate this) this practice does not have the necessary credentials to do certain procedures, tooth extraction being one of the procedures. I would encourage anyone wishing to use this practice to FIRST start with your insurance company and ask your insurance company if they are an authorized dental provider. Taking this first step will save you time and frustration. This dental office will tell you that they accept your insurance but they will not tell you that your insurance does not accept them... lol!

Just horrible I have my temporary crown put in a week a go and have to wait another 3 weeks just so I can get my permanent crown made. So I total I have to wait about a month and a half just to get my grown made. BTW I have to pay $100 to recerement my temporary crown that is keep falling off. And if you total everything from start to finish the it cost me over $800 And more than a month waiting to get one tooth fixed even that is not guaranteed

I've called maybe around 76 times to make an appointments with my mother and only once did they answer. And when they did this is how it down 1-" hello, how may I assist you today" 2-"hello, I was wondering if I can get an appointment 1-"hold on a sec" (20 minutes later) She Still didn't come back so I just hanged up on her. I think it's best to go over and to schedule an appointment to yourself.

I made an appointment 2 weeks in advance (their soonest available time) but they never actually made the appointment. I asked to speak to a manager about it and they claimed there was no manager there. They aren't open most of the time. The list goes on and on. I can see why students were protesting the University. Their administrative support IS terrible. Never again.
