Welcome to Howard University Health Sciences and thank you for visiting our Web site. We hope that it provides the information that you are seeking and want to hear from you if you have suggestions about how we can make it even more useful to you.

As you may know, Howard University Health Sciences includes Howard University Hospital, our Faculty Practice Plan, the Louis B. Stokes Health Sciences Library, and our Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health, as well as several specialty institutes and centers. In these historic and groundbreaking institutions, we conduct the research, teaching, and clinical care that seek to eliminate health disparities and provide service to the most vulnerable among us.

We have spent much of the last year in a strategic planning process. That process was highly inclusive, with hundreds of faculty, staff, students, and other interested persons contributing their wisdom and insights. It resulted in a refreshed sense of what we do and who we are, a vision of the future we want to create, and a strategy for how we will get there.

It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with such a fine team of professionals as Howard University Health Sciences continues on our exciting journey. We hope that you will share that journey with us in some way.

The Howard University Health Sciences (HUHS) enterprise includes the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Since its inception, the HUHS has conferred over 28,300 doctoral and professional degrees to scientists and health care professionals, the majority whom are from underrepresented and disadvantaged populations.

To study at Howard University is choosing an institution that is experienced, dynamic, and diverse with a tradition of quality education since 1867 provided by the constant engagement of its faculty toward the students and their needs, and by its rich campus social and cultural life

Howard University Hospital is one of America's best hospitals. The rich tradition of leadership and service at Howard University Hospital (HUH) dates back to 1862. Housed in converted army barracks, it was initially called Freedmens Hospital and provided a refuge where ex-slaves received the medical care they were denied elsewhere.

In the late 1860s, Freedmens formed a partnership with the Howard University College of Medicine to train African-American medical professionals. Together the medical school and the hospital have served as a training ground for many of the nation's top African-American physicians.

Over the course of its 145-year history of providing the finest primary, secondary and tertiary health care services, Howard University Hospital has become one of the most comprehensive health care facilities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and designated a DC Level 1 Trauma Center. In April 2007, the Hospital ranked number one among selected area hospitals on 19 quality measures published by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

A private, nonprofit institution, HUH is the nation's only teaching hospital located on the campus of a historically Black university. It offers medical students a superior learning environment and opportunities to observe or participate in ground-breaking clinical and research work with professionals who are changing the face of health care. Washingtonian and Black Enterprise magazines have identified physicians affiliated with the hospital as leaders in a vast range of specialties.

The CARES team is comprised of Howard University Health Sciences employees representingthe Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, as well as the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library, Howard University Hospital, and the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan. CARES is committed to fostering a workplace culture that ensures excellence for all of our customers (patients, their families and guests, students, vendors and employees). CARES is founded on the Health Sciences Standards of Behavior: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, Service. Through consistent employee engagement and year-round training, CARES promotes these standards of behavior to ensure that our customers enjoy an extraordinary experience.

Health Sciences led a strategic planning process that took place close to three years ago. It was during this process that CARES came to be. HUHS strategic values were formally identified at that time as collaboration, accountability, respect, excellence and service. It quickly became obvious that when put in a specific order, the strategic values created the acronym CARES, perfectly matched to Howards mission to serve. And from that moment, CARES was born and has grown into the cultural experience that we all know it to be today.
