February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

No matter which dental care profession you get, the level of care is always on par with their high professional standards. Howard Dental is the best dentist office I have ever used. They are patient and friendly and they have helped with my fears of dentistry. I highly recommend them too anyone. My experience is limited to the Stevenson office. They are wonderful!

I was welcomed with a smile and cordial greeting. Ms Lin led me to the exam and treatment area, examined my teeth and said you need to floss better. That is not what I was hoping for but we discussed it and she suggested that I try a water pik. So in hopes of getting a better report at my next cleaning guess what I am getting . You got it!

I have never had a negative experience at Howard Family Dental. The staff are kind and friendly and so is the dentist and the hygienists. I've had negative experiences at other offices in town, this one is definitely the best.

Used to be a great place until Dr. Julie sold her practice. They are awful now. My hygienist of 7 years is no longer there and my cleanings have suffered because of it. Cheaper labor doesn't mean better labor. The final insult was when they took it upon themselves to make an appointment for me at Savannah Periodontist after I told them I did not want one. I only found out when the periodontist texted my appointment time. Wow!! Never again.

My 1st visit was great friendly staff very professional They are very caring . They are willing to help you improve Your teeth's health and helping you get back on the right track. Most dentist office I've been to I left in a little pain but today with Howard family dental I left feeling better than I ever felt at a dentals office.. thank you for the great experience

I have been using the Howard Family Dental group for years. They have plenty of staff to take care of you. The dental assistants that have worked on my mouth are excellent. I have had two different dentist in the group. I am very pleased with both. The office is very clean and well run. I highly recommend The Howard Family Group and they also give a discount if you don't have insurance.
