February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

If you have any issues with your teeth, you definitely need to see Dr Dan Daniels!! He is wonderful! Dr Daniels really takes the time to explain not only what is going on with your teeth but he also explains each step of the procedure and making sure that you are comfortable the whole way through. Five stars for Dr Daniels!!

My first couple if experiences were ok, then Dr Jerry treated me, and it became a great experience. He is by far the best dentist that I have seen to date. He makes you feel at ease and he is so good, you barely know he is working on you. Everyone there is pleasant, helpful, and patient.

Very nice location and staff. Catherine (Office Manager) went out of her way to assist with insurance questions. Dentist Chris Schuler was very kind and attentive and explained in detail the procedures that were needed. I look forward to going back and will recommend this practice to others.

Terrible receptionist uneducated dental hygienist and if you cancel they will try to hunt you down like the IRS over a canceled appointment. There are much better dental offices in the area

Everyone here is incredibly nice and caring! I never leave with any questions because everyone takes the extra second to make sure I understand everything and feel comfortable! I wouldn't go anywhere else in Beaufort!

Once again I am pleasantly surprised by the relaxed feeling I get at Howard Family Dental. I have an extreme fear of the dentist and dental procedures, ridiculous right? Well, the people at Howard Family Dental NEVER make me feel that way! From the gals behind the desk, to the assistant and Dr. Jamie herself they treat me with the upmost respect and professionalism. Why go anywhere else? They are a 5 star team and I will continue to go to them for all things dental!!! Update- I had to drop them because they Kept calling to remind me of an appt including at 7am ! I'm not an idiot, had never missed an appointment but the complete disregard for my wellbeing as in the disturbance of my sleep caused me to seek another provider.
