Not sure where this practice went wrong for consideration of it's patients. I got an immediate appt to see the dentist on 3/31/22 because I expected that a tooth that had broke off was infected. I was having issues with my lymph node swelling, stiff neck, and face pain all on the right side of my body. Unsure of the exact culprit, I decided to start with the tooth. Got XRays at Hopewell Family Dentistry and was told I didn't have an infection, but I needed a root canal. I wasn't prescribed any medication. I was referred out to VCU. I asked the hygienist does this practice not do root canals anymore? She stated that dependent upon where they were located, no. I was still confused because I had received a root canal 6 months previous from them. VCU was not taking referrals whenever I called. I asked to be put on the short call back list for an extraction. Still not satisfied, on 4/1/22 I went to check and see if I had an ear infection. No ear infection. Lymph node still swollen, face still hurting. At this point I'm petrified about what could be wrong. I'm think now I need a head and neck CT. The pain is ubearable causing me to take OTC pain meds back to back. I did not like taking so much medication with no real fix so I go to another dentist in Chester 4/7/22, get more XRays, and low and behold my tooth is infected. I'm immediately put on antibiotics for 7 days. This dentist did not accept medicaid, so I had to pay $2000+ to schedule a root canal. I received a call back to come in the Hopewell Family Denistry on 4/15/22 for an extraction, what I was put on the short call list for. I get to the office on time and wait 40 minutes to be told the dentist does not have time to do my extraction today. At this point I just got up and left. My overall experience for the past 2 weeks have been garbage. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I had medicaid or what. If not wanting to bill through medicaid was the issue, I could have paid whatever was needed out of pocket as I did with the other dentist. I will NEVER utilize this business in the future. A complete waste of time, along with jeopardizing my health. These are the reasons I don't tell health care businesses that I'm RN, with an active license, so I can see how my course of treatment will play out.

Hopewell Family Dentistry is an A+ practice. When I come in for my appointments, the staff is always friendly and welcoming, which is always appreciated. Dr. Sheppard is one of the best dentists I've gone to. He's easy to get a long with and he takes the time to explain in detail what the treatment will be. He makes you feel at ease when you might be feeling apprehensive about a procedure. I highly recommend the practice!

Dr.Sheppard and his staff are amazing. I needed a Root Canal and during my procedure I was very nervous but they explained everything to me and took it slow to make me feel comfortable. I am very pleased with this office, and would recommend them to anyone !

If you need anything more complex than a cleaning and PERHAPS a basic filling if you're lucky, don't bother going to this dentist. Just go ahead and make the appointment in Chester or Midlothian. This office is so small that they refer out for any dental issue with a shred of complexity. Edit: the response from the dentist is a lie. I know two people personally who were referred out for extractions and endodontics. In fact, the dentist half-a$$ed my partner's root canal TWICE, leaving him in excruciating pain, before referring him out to an endodontist bc he couldn't even complete it correctly. He also botched a bridge fitting and still tried to charge for it. I would hate to think he was treated differently bc of his race, if y'all can apparently do all of these services in your office with no problem.
