Dr. JW Chang and his team are proud to serve the areas of Mililani, North Shore, Wahiawa, and Waipio with comprehensive treatments for children ages 18 and under. Our mission at Honu Smiles Pediatric Dentistry is to provide quality dental care to the keiki of Hawaii in a safe and comfortable environment. We strive to create a positive experience for both you and your child while addressing your kids individual dental needs. We hope to teach and promote proper oral health habits that will stay with your child throughout his or her life.
Dr. JW was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Iolani School and received his Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of the Pacific. Dr. JW attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. He then completed a two-year residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Childrens Mercy Hospital University of Missouri Kansas City. Dr. JW is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. JW and his wife, Laura, have participated in several dental mission trips to Jamaica where they provided dental care to the local residents. He maintains hospital privileges at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
Dr. Laura Chang is a general dentist who provides dentistry to our teenage patients. She was born and raised in Pullman, Washington. She also spent part of her childhood in South Korea and speaks fluent Korean. Dr. Chang attended the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, where she received both her Bachelor of Science in molecular biology and her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. She has completed mission trips to Jamaica and the Philippines, where she provided dental care to local residents. In her spare time, she likes to go to the beach and swim with her daughter and husband.
Dr. Michelle Wild was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. Dr. Wilds road to becoming a pediatric dentist has taken her all over the world. She attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA where she received both her Bachelor of Arts in Biology and her Doctorate of Dental Medicine. She then joined the United States Air Force for 4 years and served as an ambassador for children in Europe, Africa and Central America. Later, she returned home for a 2-year specialized Pediatric Dentistry residency at UCLA. Dr. Wild then spent 5 years in Germany providing comprehensive care to military children in the US Army Dental Corps. Dr. Wild loves her job because every day is an opportunity to meet new people and to improve their quality of life.
Dr. Tuan graduated from Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, D.C with a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree and continued his dental education in New York City at NYU-Langone-Brooklyn as a general practice resident. He extended his residency to serve as chief resident and to receive additional training in advanced restorative cases, oral surgery, and treating patients with special health care needs.
Dr. Tuan has experience in various healthcare settings including community health clinics on Hawaii Island where he provided dental care for the underserved population as a National Health Corps provider and served as a clinical attending for the NYU-Langone Advanced Education General Dentistry Residency Program. He found his calling in working with children during that time and decided to pursue advanced training in pediatric dentistry through the NYU-Langone- Hawaii site, where he received his certification and board eligibility. He is currently the clinic director, and attending at the Queens Medical Center- Dental Clinic, caring for both the medically complex as well as the general community.
Born and raised in Virginiaa country boy at heartDr. Tuan enjoys being outside and active during his free time. He loves the Hawaiian landscape and enjoys camping, fishing, hiking, surfing, and practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

I have NO regrets choosing this dental clinic for my son. They are so wonderful, the doctor is so nice as well as the staffs are very friendly. My son is so comfortable going inside the clinic by himself. Their very accomodating and approachable. Im at peace, knowing that my 6 years old is in good hands. Mahalo Honu Smiles...

My daughter is 2 and had her very first appointment. She gets overwhelmed very easy and isn't fond of new people. However the team was so gentle and patient with her. At the end of her appointment my daughter was smiling and giggling. She was so comfortable. I highly recommend Honu Smiles

This was my first time bringing my children here. The physical environment was very child friendly, but even more impressive was how every single adult on staff was child-centered and patient. We were referred by a family with a child with severe special needs, and they said this staff has wonderful patience for their child as well. Dr. Laura was knowledgeable and did a lot of preventative care and knowledge building versus just wanting to do expensive fillings. She seemed to truly have the kids and their dental health as a priority. Thank you Honu Smiles

The staff & dentist are so friendly & patient! My 4 year old screamed, cried, etc. during a recent visit & I'm impressed at how calm & nice the staff was with him, especially the dentist! The dentist remained calmed & explained things thoroughly to me about what our plan for treatment will be. I really appreciate how nice everyone is! I have to add, that they also did a fantastic job with my other child at his appointment too! Thank you! :) Update as of 10/10/22: We've continued to go every 6 months for both my children & our experiences have continued to be awesome! I highly recommend this dental office.

I love it here! They are great! The only thing that caught me off guard when I first started coming in was that they prefer the child to go back on their own. It is an open floor plan in the back, which makes it a little better about my child going to the back alone but it's still a little uneasy only because my child is still a little young. Other than that THEY ARE GREAT! They definitely know how to comfort the children and the office is super clean!

This entire facility goes above and beyond every single time with my 2 year old. Their energy is phenomenal, they know exactly how to make a toddler not only feel comfortable, but empowered and confident. They were patient with my son and never displayed any aggravation when he would start closing his mouth while in the chair. I was blown away by their professionalism, and their ability to incorporate fun and excitement into this experience. I highly recommend them and wish that I could give WAYYYYY more than 5 stars!! Thank you all so much for the passion that you have for what you do!

My son is autistic and they were so patient with him. It was a successful appointment! They abled to clean his teeth even though there is a lot of struggle. I highly recommend this clinic. Al staff are very friendly. Job well done!

I am SO happy we chose Honu Smiles for our son. Every staff member we interacted with was kind and professional. The staff were so amazing and patient with my (very anxious) child. His last experience with another dentist left him VERY reluctant to go at all, and by the time we left Honu Smiles he was talking about how he can't wait for his next appointment! Can't recommend them enough!

My 3 year old had x-rays done for the first time and she said she liked the experience. She likes the whole cleaning process as long as I hold her and the technicians do not mind. She doesn't like the fluoride, says it's sticky and tastes bad... but it goes away in a couple of minutes. The overall experience is great for the kids. Only downside is if you use tricare, this dentist charges you the taxes (out of pocket). My dentist (adult) doesn't. Someone explained that it is possible that my dentist writes it off but I still don't understand why the pediatric dentist can't do that as well so the customers don't have to pay.
