Over a century ago, health care in southeastern Ohio had a humble beginning with a seven-bed hospital opening at 507 Second Avenue in Gallipolis. Dr. Charles E. Holzer Sr. opened the first private hospital in the region, which has grown into the multi-facility healthcare system today.
Dr. Charles E. Holzer Jr. followed in his father's footsteps. In 1946, he returned to Gallipolis following his graduation from Cornell Medical School and a surgical residency at the University of Cincinnati. At his urging, a medical partnership known as the Holzer Clinic was formed in 1950 with six physicians.
In 1968, Holzer Hospital and the Medical Center Hospital merged, as did Holzer Clinic and Gallipolis Clinic. From the uniting of top community leaders, the new Holzer Medical Center and Holzer Clinic were opened on Jackson Pike, and dedicated to the community on April 17, 1972. Throughout the years, many milestones have marked the Holzer calendar with countless services and changes being made.
In addition, Holzer Clinic has grown from six physicians to a multi-discipline healthcare system, providing services in over 30 areas of expertise, with over 160 providers administering care in 21 locations throughout southeastern Ohio and western West Virginia.
The Holzer legacy continues today with the continued practicing of Dr. Holzer Sr. and Dr. Holzer Jr. 's philosophy, 'The Patient is the Center of All We Do.' As the system continues to grow services we will remember a proud past, celebrate present accomplishments, and look forward to what the future holds. Officially the entities are one Holzer family, as it was in the beginning of the clinic and hospital, here to benefit one another as well as the community. Once again, the system truly embodies One Dream, One Team, One Holzer.
Charles E. Holzer, MD, arrived in Gallipolis in 1909, to spend one year at the Ohio Hospital for Epileptics, now the Gallipolis Developmental Center, for intensive surgical experience. Instead, as the only surgeon in the region, he was frequently asked to care for patients other than those at OHE. When his resident year ended, he was urged to stay in the community, which he did.
In 1910, Dr. Holzer converted a house in downtown Gallipolis into the first seven-bed hospital. As the need grew, the original 25-bed wing of the new Holzer Hospital on Cedar Street was completed in 1917, and continued to expand. To ensure that health care excellence at Holzer Hospital would continue, in 1949 he gave the hospital to the community to be governed by the Holzer Hospital Foundation.

Ashe, Otto A. Vornholt, and Jacob Weinberger. Dr. Holzer Jr. continued his fathers leadership and was named Chief of Staff in 1948 and continued in that role until 1989.
The Holzer legacy continues today with the continued practicing of Dr. Holzer Sr. and Dr. Holzer Jr.s philosophy, The Patient is the Center of All We Do. The legacy has survived for over 100 years, and will continue on well into the future. In 2012, Holzer Clinic and Holzer Health Systems integrated to form one Holzer Health System, sharing one goal, one dream, and truly embodying One Holzer.
Our healthcare system continues to change, evolving to include the latest technology and innovations available and our community will continue to receive the very best healthcare, in their own backyard. Dr. Holzer Sr. didnt create a healthcare facility in the southeastern Ohio valley, he established an inspiration. An inspiration that will continue well past another 100 years.
For over 100 years, the Holzer name has been woven into of the fabric of our community. It all began with a father and son, each devoted to serving the health needs of his neighbors. Individually their legacies, Holzer Health Systems and the Holzer Clinic, have supported generations of local families. They were always united by a common goal. Today they are united in a common organization.
Together we are Holzer, the largest, strongest healthcare system serving south central Ohio into West Virginia and Kentucky. Brilliant minds from both renowned institutions have joined their efforts to enhance the caliber and scope of service. Our combined resources give us stability for the future and greater opportunity today.
Our look stands for continual growth, expanding the boundaries of healthcare. It also represents our renewed accountability and steadfast commitment to our patients, our employees and our region. We will move ever forward, helping the greatest number of our neighbors with the most advanced care.

Dr. Meredith is awesome! Very talented at what he does and a very kind person. I have had some serious work done here on my teeth and it was painless! All the assistants are great and the front desk staff is extremely friendly and kind. It's a great vibe here!

The staff at the front desk are very professional and polite. You can tell Dr. Meredith really loves his career and taking care of people. The dental technicians are wonderful! Highly recommended! My entire family goes here!

My kids have gone to this dentist for nearly 5 years. Got the kids in last fall and was told there would not be a new pediatrics dentist until October 2019 and this would be my kids last visit. Well here we are and now that has changed! This date is now going into Summer 2020! Now they can NOT see any children not even for an emergency. My honest unfiltered opinion, the people at the top running this place have chased off all of the dentists they have had with poor wages and lousy benefits.Based on the operations as of right now, this place will be boarded up within the next 9-18 months.

So disappointed in the fact that I told the staff exactly what I needed when I scheduled an appt. They allowed me to schedule the appointment and then once I got there, it turned out to be a giant waste of time because they can not do what my daughter needed. They referred me somewhere else, so instead of telling me that they couldn't do it when I scheduled they wasted my time.

Have checked to see if they take our insurance twice now. Never got a call back even after being told by the second lady in the office that she would call us and let us know one way or the other. Just got a list from our insurance that says they except our coverage but not much point of trying seen I know they will not call!

Several locally-based dentists practice out of this location. I recently began seeing Dr. Joe Essman here, and have been extremely happy with the care I've received. The staff is friendly, professional, and accommodating.
