HJ Ludington DDS - General dentist in Portsmouth, NH

I grew up in upstate New York in the Albany area. As a third-generation dentist, I vividly remember running around my Grandfathers (and now fathers) dental practice at a very young age, always interested in what he was doing. It was during this time that I found my passion for dentistry and decided to follow in my familys footsteps.

I graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2015. I was an active member of the Tufts community, volunteering in a number of community outreach programs. In my fourth year, I participated in a two-week mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where my team and I provided comprehensive oral health care to hundreds of patients. After graduating from Tufts, I was accepted into the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at Boston University School of Dental Medicine, where I greatly expanded my knowledge and enhanced my clinical skills in all aspects of General Dentistry.

For the next three years, I practiced as a General Dentist in the Boston area. Although I loved providing comprehensive care to my patients, I made the decision to focus on my true passion, which is Endodontics. I returned to Boston University, where I completed my specialty training and received my certificate in Endodontics. I currently serve on two AAE committees, the Resident and New Practitioner Committee (RNPC) and the Resident Expert Advisory Council (REACH), where I enjoy advocating for the specialty and networking with dentists from around the country.

I consider myself a very caring individual who goes above and beyond to ensure my patients have a comfortable experience. At the same time, I pride myself on practicing with the highest ethical standards and providing excellent quality of care. I look forward to working with your office and the Seacoast community.

My primary dentist said I needed a root canal. He recommended this office (where I had gone years ago). He crossed out Dr. L's name on the referral and wrote / underlined Dr. Deluke. He was amazing. He and his assistant, Kate, explained everything thoroughly. Great experience with the entire staff today!

Quality care, efficient work, and customer service that is enviable! Thank you, Dr. Ludington, and team members, for taking such good care of my family! I brought a family member to Dr. Ludington for an urgently needed root canal. While waiting I was comfortable and had pleasant interactions with staff as they moved about the office. Following the procedure I was told that Dr. Ludington and his assistants were consummate professionals, providing excellent dental care while also clearing explaining what needed to happen, and why. When I inevitably require endodontic work, I will gladly put my teeth in Dr. Ludington's care. I will also encourage my friends and family to call this office if they need these services.

Saw Dr Ludington for a root canal - used to think this would be an hour long procedure - he was in and done in 23 minutes. The expedited service and care was so helpful for me and stopped my pain. Thank you Dr Ludington and staff for helping me!

DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST! DO NOT! The absolute worst bedside manner, arrogant, RUDE, carless, AWFUL. I saw him for many years just not really knowing where else to go for extensive dental work I needed done. Thankfully for him, he has an all female staff of wonderful woman (at the time, most have now left because of his terrible practice.). They were the only reason I hung on, but as they all left, his practice got worse and worse. My last extraction, he spoke down to his assistant, blaming her for a bad Novocain needle that fell apart in my mouth causing terrible pain, later leaving a bruise the size of my entire face, mocking her in front of me, to follow, I developed infections, lock jaw and nerve damage costing me THOUSANDS in medical bills, an MRI, PT. RUN the other way. The bruise alone, after being seen by actual professionals, I was told was negligent and should not have been there. He's also an ENDODONTIST and should be staying in his lane of root canals, instead his greed has led him to implants and surgery which is outside his boundaries of what he should even be doing! Speaking on behalf of other professionals who brought this to my attention. I also had to see a specialty dentist to help stop a pulsing on the side of my head from nerve damage caused by his "aggressive extraction", as he put it. Id also like to add, when transferring to a new, and better qualified dentist, they took a "wild guess" at where I had been treated, his awful antics are known all over. Seriously. Ive never felt so degraded and poorly treated by a medical professional in my life. If this review saves one person from landing in his hands and giving him your money, its worth taking the time to post.

I'm 56 years old and had a lot of dental work done in my life. I went for a root canal after referral by my dentist. Final bill of $1262 was inflated by unnecessary extra costs. Not cool. Won't recommend this place.

Was referred by my dentist to this practice. PLEASE READ THE OTHER REVIEWS... You will see a pattern forming about this DR. and his practice This is the worst practice I have ever been to. The staff is nice but gives incorrect information...let me list I had to wait 39 mins in the chair after a unnecessary x-ray...already had them sent over from my dentist and a sensitivity test that was inconclusive by the assistant...inconclusive because the tooth she tested had no reaction and told me she didnt know why I felt no sensation...??? The dentist came in. No bedside manner. ARROGANT. He poked around in my mouth for 25 seconds. Then drew a picture of what he said was wrong....tooth exstraction...bone graph...implant...crown. Gonna take 6 months to complete. Chose to tell me "its about bone healing" when I asked why so long? Told him Im gonna do some research and he scolded me about people that go to Dr. Google! Was brought into the finance office to go over the costs only to find out they (Dr's practice) are "out of my insurance nerwork" I was furious...I specifically asked the woman at the front desk BEFORE I WAS EVEN SEEN... if my insurance was excepted and she told me YES. She should have told me I was out of my network. Everyone knows your insurance will only pay a tiny portion of the bill compared to in network practices andcyour liable for the rest. I do not like being lied to. I left and will find a good reputable practice to get this work done.

I recently had root canal treatment at Dr. Ludington's office and was extremely satisfied with the service, procedure, and outcome. Staff was very welcoming and friendly, attentive to detail, and concerned with how I was feeling throughout the process. The treatment was quicker than I was anticipating, and the office reached out and followed up promptly after to see how I was feeling. Would recommend to anyone who appreciates great service.

Was referred to dr. Ludington, I was brought in to the exam room and was told I need a radiograph and a sensitivity test. I told the dental assistant I had them done last week and had them available for her to view, she told me that people tell her the same thing all the time and that the angle was probably wrong (even though she never saw them). So she re took one bite wing and then did the cold test. I had asked her a couple questions about root canals and she answered the questions , but did question why I was asking. The dental assistant left and said the doctor would be in soon. I sat there for a few minutes and had received a call from a client, I took the call and was on the phone for a couple minutes when the doctor and dental assistant walked in, the doctor told me to get off the phone ( his exact words) and sat down in the chair to start the procedure, I motioned to him and said one second, he stood up and said to the dental assistant to get him when I got off the phone. I did end the call as they walked out, and waited their return. The doctor returned and introduced himself and shook my hand, he asked what I did for the military and I replied back, he then said we got off on the wrong foot and said I shouldn't have been rude to his assistant and that he doesn't make money on x-rays, and he doesn't get his full fee taking military patients because the plan doesn't pay his full rates. He expressed that me being on the phone when he entered was wasting his time and his time is valuable, I replied mine is also. He said ok, we will not be continuing and said I should leave, and I did. I do appreciate him taking a lesser amount for his services, but I have to agree with one of the prior reviews he has no bedside manners and the dental assistant I went to is just as rude.
