Dr. Darren Dotson is originally from the Iowa Great Lakes Area and has practiced in Spirit Lake since 2003. He graduated from Okoboji High School in 1994. He attended Buena Vista University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He went on to attend the University of Iowa College of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
Dr. Dotson is a member of the Iowa Dental Association as well as the American Dental Association. He prides himself in patient education and offers treatment options to suit the needs and the desire of his patients.
Dr. Dotson lives in Spirit Lake with his wife and two children. He enjoys spending time with his family, competitive sailing, hunting, fishing and spending as much time outdoors and on the water as possible.
Dr. Amy Hartzell was born and raised in Spencer, Iowa and graduated from Spencer High School in 1998. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2006. Upon graduation, Dr. Hartzell joined a dental office in Sioux City, Iowa where she practiced until moving to the lakes area and joining Dr. Darren Dotson in June of 2011.
Mona has been a hygienist with Hill Avenue Dental for 26 years. She moved back to Spirit Lake in 1994 where she and her husband Tim have raised four children and now have six grandchildren. Mona continues to enjoy her free time biking, golfing and kayaking.
Amber graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of South Dakota. She has over 15 years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist. When she is not at the office taking care of patients, she is with her husband Matt and their two sons, Joe and Toby. Amber enjoys boating, being outdoors and spending time with her family.
Jill has been with our team for 6 years following completion of her dental hygiene degree at Hawkeye Community College in 2014. She and her husband Blake live in Spencer with their son Maddox, a springer spaniel and two cats. In her free time she enjoys crafting, shopping and spending time with her family and friends.
Tricia moved to Estherville with her son Hayden in 2016 after obtaining her dental hygiene degree at Savannah Technical college in Savannah, Georgia. They have two dogs and three cats. When not at the office, Tricia can be found at Elements Design Studio assisting with wedding events and floral designing. In her free time, Tricia enjoys crafting jewelry, playing video games with her son, and fishing.
Heather was raised in Spirit Lake and graduated from Spirit Lake High School. She moved back to the area in 2015 where she lives with her German shepherd Tara. Heather joined the Hill Avenue team in 2020. When she is not with her family she spends her free time knitting, reading and baking.
Keri has been working in the dental field for the last 10 years. She lives in Milford with her husband and 3 daughters. When outside the office, Keri can be found camping, fishing, hunting, reading, and cheering for her daughters as they participate in athletics.

Another great experience at Hill Avenue Dental! Dr. Dotson takes the time with the numbing shots, to make it essentially a painless event. Even with an extensive procedure on a back tooth, I was comfortable the entire time, and have had almost no pain as the numbing medication wears off. If you are looking for a dentist in Spirit Lake, IA, I highly recommend this wonderful dental practice - very clean and professional.

Booked an appointment for a cleaning for myself and also an appointment for my 2 year olds first check up. From the start Amber was AMAZING. I went first to try and show my son it wasn't scary and she knew exactly how to corral him around the corner during X-rays and to try make him involved in my cleaning so we had luck during his. Unfortunately he was still scared when it was his turn and started to scream and cry. That's when Amy stepped in and said we could try again in 6 months and that they didn't want to make a bad experience for him for the future. They were both so thoughtful and professional. I would recommend this place to anyone who has kids!!

They got me in right away for some dental pain that came on quickly. Everyone was very professional and courteous. They got my problem tooth taken care of and I have had no issues since. Very glad to have this dental clinic in our community!

Went there Monday morning shortly after they opened. Had a tooth go bad over the weekend. I wasnt a patient of theirs but they squeezed me in. The entire staff was friendly courteous, helpful and friendly. Have found a new place to dentist. Thank you, Scott
