At Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics, we believe every patient deserves the best in orthodontic care. Our doctors are highly respected in the orthodontic community and utilize cutting-edge technology and resources to provide exceptional treatment outcomes. If youre looking for an orthodontist who is skilled and compassionate, youve come to the right place. Whether youre interested in Invisalign or you prefer traditional braces, youll find what youre looking for here. A healthy confident smile is our goal for every patient.

Dr. Steve Henseler became fascinated with orthodontics while undergoing treatment himself as a teenager. He was immediately drawn to the challenge of creating beautiful smiles and the fun atmosphere present in the orthodontic office. As a high school senior, he committed himself to the long journey of becoming an orthodontist and, boy, is he happy that he did!

Steve began the educational part of the journey at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, where he graduated with a bachelors degree in biology in 1989. The next step was competing his D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry with High Distinction and, finally, earning his orthodontic certificate and Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota orthodontic residency program. He was excited to end part of the journey and immediately set up practice in Woodbury in 1995.

But alas, the journey never ends. Dr. Henseler has continued his education by immersing himself in all sorts of professional activities. He attends national and local seminars to sharpen his orthodontic skills. He has been certified by the American Board of Orthodontics a distinction which less than 30% of orthodontists can claim. Steve also is very active in local study clubs, such as the L.D. Pankey Study Club and the Spear Study Club. He currently sits on two boards that advise the American Association of Orthodontists, was a former President of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists and taught orthodontic residents at the University of Minnesota. This dedication of time ensures that Dr. Henseler is always up to date on the ever-changing world of orthodontic technology and the best orthodontic care.

Steve is active in his community as an annual sponsor of the Woodbury Safety Camp, supports numerous local schools and various youth organizations. He volunteers to coach both Soccer and Track & Field at St. Ambrose Catholic School. He and his wife, Dr. Julie Henseler, currently reside in Woodbury with their sons, Ethan and Nicholas. Steves leisure time activities include biking the St. Croix Valley and playing golf when time allows. The Henselers are avid Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packer fans.

Dr. Henseler has recently been chosen for the sixth consecutive year as MPLS/St. Paul Magazines Top Orthodontist. He continuously strives to provide the highest standard of orthodontic care possible while doing it in a fun and relaxed environment.

Having gone through orthodontic treatment twice himself, Dr. Paul Kocian understands the value of a healthy smile. The positive impact of orthodontic treatment and its perfect blend of both art and science is what drew him to the profession. He has practiced orthodontics exclusively for eight years and enjoyed every minute.

After serving nine years in the U.S. Navy, Paul, along with his wife Marjorie and two young children, moved back to the Twin Cities to join theHenseler & Kocian Orthodontics team in 2015. As natives of Minnesota, they are excited to make the Midwest home once again.

Paul has an exemplary rsum, which includes over 12 total years of higher education. In 2002, Paul graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in biology. His D.D.S. degree was earned from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2006. Following dental school, Paul sought to broaden his knowledge by completing a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in Portsmouth, Virginia. He then practiced general dentistry for two years, including an eight-month deployment to Iraq, where he served as the dental detachment commander before heading back to school once again. Dr. Kocian earned both his Certificate of Specialty in Orthodontics as well as a masters degree in oral biology from the University of Pennsylvania. While in his orthodontic program, Paul received multiple honors, including the David C. Hamilton Orthodontic Research Award. He also achieved his board certification and was granted Diplomate status with the American Board of Orthodontics. In addition to his clinical practice, he has taught orthodontic techniques and planning to the dental residents at the Portsmouth Medical Center and served as a member of the hospitals Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Board.

His commitment to continuing education never stops, as he attends numerous local and national meetings each year. He has completed multiple advanced courses with The Dawson Academy, The Andrews Foundation, The Roth Williams Society, Invisalign and is active in The Spear Study Club.

Outside the office, Dr. Kocian enjoys many outdoor activities with his family, including snowboarding, fishing, and hiking. He also enjoys travel, photography, cooking on his Kamado grill and has a slight obsession with home-roasted coffee.

Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose and treat problems with the position, alignment or spacing of the teeth, and related irregularities in the face and the jaw. We use a number of special treatments, including braces and other oral appliances, to correct these problems.

There are two good reasons: aesthetics and function. Having an attractive smile not only changes the way people see you it enhances your own self-image as well. Orthodontic treatment also allows your teeth to function better and makes it easier to keep them clean, which can improve your overall health.

You're never too old to begin orthodontic treatment but if you start at an earlier age, your problems may be easier to treat. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child who may need orthodontic treatment should come in for a first visit around age 7.

Teeth that are protruding, crowded together or erupting out of position are clear indications that treatment is needed (View Examples). Less obvious signs are mouth breathing, frequent biting of the cheek or palate, speech difficulties, and thumb sucking that goes past 3-4 years of age. If teeth don't meet properly when the mouth closes, or if jaws make sounds or shift as they move, this may also indicate an orthodontic problem.

Having braces put on is generally painless. Some people experience minor aches and pains in the first couple of days or so, as they adjust to wearing their appliances; periodic adjustments may sometimes cause soreness as well, though it typically lasts only a short time. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to alleviate any discomfort, but are usually unnecessary.

It's different for each person, but generally the active stage of treatment (that is, wearing braces or other appliances) may take from 6-30 months. After that, a retainer is worn for at least several months more.

If your teeth are severely crowded (because your mouth is too small to properly accommodate all of them) or if you have impacted teeth (teeth that are trapped beneath the gum line by other teeth) then extraction may be necessary. In the case of younger patients, early treatment may make extraction unnecessary.

Yes you should pass up the types of foods that could damage or become trapped in your braces. Some of these include raw vegetables, hard candy, caramel, taffy and ice cubes (fortunately, ice cream is OK). We will give you a list of foods to avoid.

In a word: Yes. Of course, whether you wear braces or not, we recommend you wear a mouthguard when playing most sports. Musicians are generally able to play their instruments just as they did before, but they may need a short adjustment period after getting braces.

You do in fact, it's more important than ever! Keeping teeth free of plaque (and potentially, decay) can be challenging when you're wearing braces. Your dentist can help you avoid these problems with frequent cleanings and exams.

Almost always, the answer is yes: If you don't wear a retainer, your teeth can rapidly shift out of position and then all the effort put into your treatment is lost! Your retainer helps you maintain that good-looking smile for a lifetime.

Orthodontic care is a long-term investment in your health and well-being. Yet its cost hasn't increased as fast as many other consumer prices, and many financing options are available that make orthodontic care affordable. Weighed against the true cost of living with problem teeth, however, orthodontic treatment can be a wise investment indeed.

The Magic of Orthodontics Proper alignment of the teeth is basic to Smile Design. Their position dictates how they work together and affects the way you look and smile. Only orthodontic treatment can move teeth into the right position. Simply put, when things look right, they probably are right. Orthodontics for the Older Adult Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so there's no such thing as too old for braces. In fact, nowadays about one out of every five orthodontic patients is an adult. H&K Orthodontics we're great to work with. They were patient with my son's baby teeth to fall out and started the process on our time instead of their time. Any time my son had to come in for an adjustment, they were able to see him right away. They predicted he would have his braces off in less than two years and it was one and a half years. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I highly recommend them for orthodontic work.
