Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, starts with bacterial growth in your mouth and can lead to tooth loss due to the destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth if not properly treated. Periodontal disease, in its advanced stages, can cause sore, bleeding gums, painful chewing problems, as well as tooth loss. According to the American Dental Association, gingivitis and periodontitis are the major causes of tooth loss in adults.

Periodontitis (gum disease) is commonly preceded by gingivitis (gum inflammation). Gingivitis does not always lead to periodontitis. Gingivitis affects the majority of people at some point in their life, and its mild symptoms make it easy to overlook. However, if left untreated, it can lead to more serious dental issues. In the early stages of gingivitis the bacteria in plaque build-up can cause the gums to become inflamed and bleed easily during teeth brushing. The teeth are still firmly planted in their sockets, even if the gums are irritated. At this time, no irreparable bone or tissue damage has occurred yet.

Your gums attach to your teeth at a lower level than the visible gum edges. A sulcus is formed as a result of this. Food and plaque can become trapped in this space, causing gingivitis or gum infection. Plaque is a bacterial coating that forms on the surface of the mouth. It constantly forms on the surface of your teeth. Plaque hardens into tartar as it progresses. Plaque that extends below the gum line might cause a gum infection. If not treated right away this can result in major tooth decay and even tooth loss. Other factors, however, can have a role in periodontal disease. These are some of them:

  • Illnesses may impact the health of your gums. This covers diseases that affect the immune system, such as cancer or HIV. Patients with diabetes are more likely to acquire infections since diabetes inhibits the body's ability to use blood sugar.
  • Medications can have an impact on oral health because some reduce saliva flow, which protects teeth and gums. Some medications, including the anticonvulsant Dilantin and the anti-angina medicines Procardia and Adalat, can promote aberrant gum tissue growth.
  • Despite periodontal disease symptoms being typically subtle, the condition does not entirely come without warning signs. Certain common symptoms may indicate the presence of the disease. Gum disease causes the following symptoms:

Gum disease treatment aims to promote the reattachment of healthy gums to teeth, reduce swelling, pocket depth, and infection risk, and stop disease progression. The type of treatment you receive is determined by the stage of your condition, how you responded to previous therapies, and your overall health. Treatments vary from nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery to restore supportive tissues.

When plaque control is practiced, gingivitis can be reversed and gum disease can be prevented in nearly all cases. Professional cleanings at least twice a year, as well as daily brushing and flossing, are required for proper plaque control.

Brushing your teeth twice a day is recommended. Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if the bristles start to fray.

Food particles and plaque are removed from between the teeth and under the gum line by flossing. Flossing every day removes plaque from places that your toothbrush can't reach. Interdental cleaners, picks, and little brushes that fit between teeth are also options. If youre not familiar with these options, ask your dentist how to use them so you don't damage your gums.

Rinse your mouth. Antibacterial mouthwash prevents bad breath and plaque while also preventing gingivitis. According to the American Dental Association, antibacterial rinses can help to reduce bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease. Consult your dentist to determine which mouthwash is best for you.

I went in for a routine check-up and found out that I needed onlays. After trying a few other dentists, I found Heather Ridge Dentistry. They offer exceptional care when it comes to inlays and onlays. The dentists are excellent in their craft and take the time to explain everything to me before anything gets done. They really work hard to earn their patients' trust, which is big for me. Now, my teeth are stronger and more resilient than ever before, and my smile looks even better too! After my experience, I would recommend Heather Ridge Dentistry to anyone in need of exceptional family-friendly dental care!

I had been grappling with my periodontal disease for months and went to multiple dentists. But none of them were able to help me with it. Finally, a friend suggested Heather Ridge Dentistry laser dentistry service so I decided to give them a call. I'm so glad that I did because they are an excellent team of professionals who have helped me regain the health that I've always wanted. They were able to reduce the severity of my periodontal disease and also treat my gum disease. I highly recommend Heather Ridge Dentistry services.

I went by thief office for a check up. They were supposed to follow up after contacting my insurance which they never did. I decided to go to another dentist for my procedure. When my new dentist contacted the insurance, the insurance denied the benefits because Heather Ridge Dentistry submitted a claim that they did the procedure on my teeth. So now I have to wait a few weeks until the insurance can deny payment to Heather Ridge and approve my benefits to the new dental office. Honestly a total scam.

I recently went to Heather Ridge Dentistry to get my Invisalign custom-built because my teeth overlapped so I was not satisfied with the aesthetic result. They were amazing! The staff at Heather Ridge Dentistry did their best to make me feel comfortable during my treatment and came up with some great solutions that fixed the problems I had with my teeth. One of the best things they did was take pictures of me, measuring every tooth in my mouth and making a mold from all my molars and premolars so that I could avoid any issues with space between my teeth. I recommend Heather Ridge Dentistry because they provide a clean and comfortable experience and a high-quality smile at the end of the day.

They're great at emergencies, so don't be afraid of putting off your regular dental care to go to them when it's needed. I had been going to the same dentist for over 10 years, and I was getting tired of him telling me my teeth weren't good enough. My teeth used to be white, but as of recently, they were starting to turn yellow. I had heard about Heather Ridge Dentistry through a friend so I went in for teeth whitening and I am very happy with the results. I was impressed at how friendly, professional and helpful the staff were. They did a visual exam of my teeth and made me feel very comfortable. The dental hygienist explained what they would be doing and what my teeth would look like after treatment. Heather Ridge Dentistry is the best place to go if you want to whiten your teeth without having to pay a costly amount.

I Had such a lovely experience getting gum tissue surgery here. Dr. Hoang and his team were extremely professional, communicative and friendly throughout the entire process. They also have a wonderful Treatment Plan Coordinator, who walked me through my options for payment and was always readily available via email or phone if I had any questions. The surgery went well and I was happy with the results. Would highly recommend this office.

I have been coming to Heather Ridge as my PPO dentist for the past 2 years. Dr. K is amazing at what he does and I can't say enough about how much of an asset he is to this community. He's been responsive to my needs, offered great advice for my children, and always makes me feel at home whenever I visit. Recently I decided to get my teeth done and scheduled an appointment and Dr. K squeezed me in despite the fact that they were fully booked and running behind. The staff is always very detailed and paid attention to every little thing. I have never had a bad experience with him and I will continue coming for as long as I can! Definitely recommend as a PPO dentist.

I absolutely loved my experience here! From the front office with Ticia, the dental assistant Sara to Dr. K himself! Everyone is friendly and helps. The office is super clean and all COVID precautions were followed. Dr. K is super knowledgeable and explained to me what he's doing with patience and care. The procedure itself went smoothly with no issues. I originally purchased a Groupon for cleaning but ended up keeping Dr. K as my permanent dentist. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a new dentist.

Dr K and Heather Ridge is 5 star service. It starts with scheduling, they are so easy to deal with. They stayed late until 5:30 because I work about an hour away. Recently I went in to remove 2 wisdom teeth and get 3 cavities filled. I was scared but Dr K put me at ease. Before I knew it I was numbed up and he was off and going. The whole procedure took about 30 minutes. It is a week later and I feel great! It was a big procedure for me but Dr K and his team came through for me. 5 star all the way!!

From the minute you walk in the door you are greeted with a warm welcome! I had my teeth cleaned and the hygienist was conscientious of the fact that I have TMJ and would give a jaw a break when needed. Dr Khoshrou was very nice and I never felt I was being rushed while he answered my questions. I highly recommend Heather Ridge Dentistry
