Dr. Camden Tokunaga is a second-generation dentist known for his comfort-conscious approach. He strives to make each visit as pleasant as possible, helping patients overcome the fear and anxiety of seeing the dentist. Dr. Tokunaga enjoys talking story and getting to know his patients, Its so nice meeting patients that say they saw my parents when they were kids, and not only are they still with us, they even bring their kids to see us as well.
Dr. Ashley Takiguchi loves seeing her patients grow from adorable, laughing little kids to dream-filled teens with healthy smiles. My goal is to create a positive and fun experience at a young age so that our patients enjoy seeing us, and consequentially, reduce their dental anxiety, she said.

Dr.Lee is unethical and cruel pediatric dentist! He failed to disclose the full scope of the procedure he was going to perform on my 13 year old son. At no point in the conversation did the doctor mention that he is planning to put SIX stainless steel caps in my 13 year old's mouth when estimated lifespan of his baby teeth is just over a year maximum! It is absolutely incomprehensible how a doctor can go ahead with an extensive procedure with no proper consent from the patient. The only explanation I can think of is that the office made 1,308.90 in about 30 minutes. The procedure was also very roughly executed. The doctor did not communicate how he would like to know if the patient is in pain which is pretty standard to pediatric dentists. Seconds after administering anesthetic Dr.Lee was drilling. Dental cleaning was a laughable experience as well. My son's teeth got barely polished with a brush and topical fluoride got applied. No flossing etc. done. This is not the first pediatric dentist we are encountering on the Big Island but it is absolutely the rock bottom worst one ever.

Dr. Spivek is an amazing dentist. He located a cracked tooth and a source of an infection that most likely caused frequent headaches and discomfort for a couple of years. He did his due diligence in attempt to save the tooth without guarantees a new crown would save it. At the end of the day, his recommendation to pull it was in my best interest. It saddens me to hear Dr. Spivek is leaving Hawaii Family Dental. No matter where he goes, I know he will continue to bestow genuine kindness and put the needs of his patients first. He is a big loss to Hawaii Family Dental because when there were no other dentists at the Hilo location, he saw every patient with kindness and courtesy.

If i could rate negative stars I would. As someone who has worked in the Dental field for 10 years I can honestly say GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. This was the worst experience I've ever had, or heard of. I scheduled my 12 year old daughter for her a cleaning at this office as she has an Orthodontic Consultation next month, I wanted to make sure she was current on her cleanings and had no cavities prior to having braces placed. I had already filled out paperwork online but had to fill out the large packet again when I got there. Once my daughter was taken back, they took X-rays and brought the doctor in. He didn't look at the X-rays, we talked about her upcoming ortho consult and he lectured myself and her about flossing, and that she would need to be sure to floss once she has braces. Knowing all of this already, not wanting to be rude and tell them I knew all of this already, I simply nodded my head in understanding. He did a quick 2 minute polish of her teeth and sent us in our way. I asked "Are you not going to scale her teeth?" He replied "no, she didn't need it." My daughter has always had her teeth cleaned every 6 months as recommended and still has needed her teeth to be scaled (as most if not every person/child over 6 should need). They didn't floss her teeth, when asked why not I was told they don't floss childrens teeth. what???? This is not proper standard of care, you sit and lecture me and my child about flossing yet you don't floss your patients teeth at their teeth cleaning?? This place is horrendous. One a good note, I have personally worked with Dr. Alex Spivak in the past and highly recommended his work. He was always great to work with and great to his patients. If I ever return it would be to see him. He was NOT the Dr my daughter saw today.

UPDATE: new hygienist, Adam, is amazing. Friendly, funny and gave me great tips on keeping my teeth healthy! Reach with that brush to target my tarter prone read. My new dentist Alex is also a joy. Always great going to the dentist when they are friendly and care about your teeth and health, and not about the $$$. I recommend this place to everyone especially those who have had bad experiences with others!!! Mahalo Adam, Alex and the rest of the crew! I'm a patient for LIFE!!! been going to Hawaii Family Dental since 2017. Hadn't gone for YEARS due to horrid experiences as a child/teenager with other dentists. Started going to Hawaii Family Dental because my mother had a dental emergency and her co-worker recommended them. They've been my go to ever since! They were welcoming from the get go! Recently got all 4 wisdoms pulled by Dr. Edgar. Both he and assistant Al put me at ease the entire time. They could tell I was nervous and scared and when it was all done, I felt silly for dreading it so! Immediately texted my girlfriend in the same situation and told her to call them and see if they can take her as a new patient and schedule her extraction! I'm looking forward to my next cleaning with Hygienist Shontell! Only had her once and after that session, she my girl! They are all the epitome of ALOHA! Shout out to Dr. Meyer! She my girl too! They are all awesome . Never fear when you are in the hands of Hawaii Family Dental!!! #LovingMySmile !!!

Doctor Spivek is the best dentist I have seen in 40 years. He did a bite adjustment that transformed my mouth from what I thought was just normal pain I had to live with and now I have no mouth pain at all. He is truly amazing, caring and does an excellent job that really no one else ever did. I have never met a dentist that cares this much. We are truly blessed that he is in Hilo. If I could give a million stars I would. Hands down best dentist ever. Thank you so much.

The staff and doctors are welcoming and helpful. Adam, the hygienist, is always friendly and upbeat. He does an excellent job of cleaning teeth while getting to know his patients. Chatting with Adam makes going to the dentist fun!

I am so blessed to have gone to Hawaii Family Dental to get my teeth pulled by the grace of God Dr. Anani DID an AMAZING extraction with not only one BUT 3 OF'EM. If any one would ever need to extract or just a check up I would HIGHLY recommend her. Customer service is awesome too....mahalo

I've been going to this branch of Hawaii Family Dental since 2016 when I returned from Thailand with many new crowns and have consistently been pleased with their work. And again this month I was given some superior service by their Hygenist Adam Zahn. I was somehow so anxious about a deep gum cleaning that I called ahead to ask if a dentist was in the office on a Saturday and even considered canceling. The receptionist said to me, "Have you met Adam yet? He has a great personality and you will be fine." So I showed up and so glad I did because he was so gentle and accommodating and truly almost pain free. And during those 2 appointments he explained to me just how important this treatment is for my gums at this point and I was able to embrace what I had feared. And truly after the first treatment, that side of my mouth began to heal. Thank you Hawaii Family Dental and Adam Zahn.

got my kids cavities filled here, we had no idea it would look so obvious for the kids smile. i had no idea there were other options available until a family member saw my kids teeth and explained there are other options, I wish the dentist had covered the options with me before doing the work.
