Marcela is a Registered Dental Assistant with over 15 years experience in the dental field. Marcela's passion for dentistry started at a young age by shadowing her father, who is a dentist in her home country of Peru. She has an unparalleled focus on your comfort. A pillow, a warm blanket, earphones to listen to your favorite music, or 3D glasses to watch a funny movie are some of the comforts she will offer while your treatment is being done. Marcela is happily married and enjoys watching movies, hiking, outdoor sporting events, attending continuing education courses, and spending time with her family and friends.

My two passions are dental-facial aesthetics and oral health promotion! This profession allows me to impact the oral health and quality of life of one individual at a time, helping each person I meet achieve a confident, healthy smile for a lifetime.

I obtained my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, cum laude, from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. I chose Harvard because I always had a strong interest in medicine, and it appealed to me that at Harvard, dentistry was looked as a specialty of medicine, and emphasized how oral health is related to overall health. In my fifth year, I obtained a Masters in Public Health. The concepts regarding disease prevention that I learned there continue to influence my way of practicing dentistry tremendously. I like to view myself as an oral health specialist, and educate my patients how healthy teeth and gums can stay healthy for a lifetime.

While at Harvard, I completed two research projects. With a grant from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, I did a longitudinal study evaluating chairside, hand-sculpted resin veneers and how they held up long term. I also did a public health research study on assessment of oral disease prevention methods implemented for children under the age of three in Cambridge.

I am involved in continuing education extensively, and have significantly more continuing education hours than recommended because I love learning about new developments in the exciting field of dentistry. In pursuit of offering the best treatment options to my patients, it is my professional ethical obligation to keep up with technological innovations.

As a patient advocate, I feel it is my obligation to question what products and materials are best-suited to improve my patients oral health. With the myriad of oral hygiene products available, and as patients are becoming more and more educated about harmful substances and possible toxins in everyday products, they are asking me which products to choose. I spend hours researching the latest ingredients in oral care products in order to confidently recommend what I believe to be most effective.

My interest in continuing education is multifold: I love learning, I love learning about materials and innovative technologies, and so in pursuit of delivering optimal care to my patients, I keep up-to-date with technological advances. Bottom line is, if I am knowledgeable, I can serve my patients optimally.

I am passionate about world dental health. I have been studying the disparities in oral healthcare in third world and underdeveloped countries. I recently came across statistics from the NIH regarding a high prevalence of caries in the adult population of the US. Ninety-five percent of American adults between ages 20-64 have had or have caries, and this trend gets even worse in the geriatric population. These statistics are applicable worldwide. Despite all our efforts in terms of fluoridation of public waters, etc., caries continues to be an epidemic. As a public health professional, I feel it is my responsibility to improve these conditions, both locally and internationally. Once a year my husband, Dr. Gene R. Humphries, and I spend a month doing volunteer work. Most recently, we spent a month in Kenya improving the oral health of the Maasai tribe. It was an experience Ill never forget.

My husband and I have one lovely daughter, Courtney, a San Clemente High School graduate who studied at UCSB. I love the outdoors, so I can often be found running, hiking, and traveling whenever possible. I also enjoy studying languages and speak Hungarian, Romanian, Spanish, French, German, and a little Swahili and Farsi.
