Hi, Im Dr Joel, the proud co-owner of HartstoneDental Associates. I am a University of Wisconsin-Madison alum, and completed dental school at the University of Minnesota, where I graduated in 1990. I spent the first five years of my career serving our country as a member of the US Air Force. There I expanded my knowledge in all areas of dentistry, but especially in the areas of extractions, root canals, and gum surgery.

Dentistry has been and continues to be, a great profession for me. I enjoy going to work every day, seeing and working with friends I have made over the years. My passion is to treat my patients with the latest and best techniques and materials in an atmosphere where they feel safe and comfortable.

Learning about my patients and their lives is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. Through talking with them, I can find out what their dental needs and wants are. I chose dentistry because I have always had the drive to help people, and dentistry was my path to fulfilling that drive.

The team we have created at HartstoneDental cant be beat! Every staff member provides their personal strengths to contribute to our very cohesive and amazing team. Each staff member steps up to help when others need it without question or hesitation. We truly care about one another and that carries through to our treatment of our patients.

Offices like ours are beginning to become a rarity. We are a true family dental practice that puts the needs of our patients first. Small enough to know all our patients, but connected to a network of specialists that are like-minded, enables us to offer unequaled treatment.

My wife Lindsay and I were married in 1989, and have been living in Middleton since 1995. We have a son Tyler, who owns his own business, and a daughter Ellie, who is working as a dental hygienist. I enjoy being outdoors. Whether it is at my cabin in Northern Wisconsin, at my hunting land west of Madison, on a golf course, or on my motorcycle as long as it involves plenty of fresh air, Im a happy man.

Volunteering is very important to me, as is being a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Actively participating in our community as well as charitable dentistry work helps me blend my passion for giving back with my career. I stay active in the Give Kids a Smile program as well as the Touched Twice dental program.

When you sit in my chair, I strive to make you feel comfortable and ease the fears some may have when coming to see a dentist. I want to present patients with options so they feel engaged in their oral health treatment, and I want them to also understand the quality of care that we are giving to them.

I do this with the support of our staff that totally understands, believes in, and conveys the same mission as my brother and me ... which is to create beautiful smiles to last a lifetime. Overall, we strive to make our patients feel like friends and family, and we promise always to have your best interests in everything we do.

Hi, Im Dr. Jon Szewczyk (pronounced chef-chick), the proud co-owner of Hartstone Dental. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received my Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Iowa. I continued my education through a general practice residency at the Chicago Veterans Association Hospital where I received advanced training in multiple aspects of dental care including implant therapy, endodontics, and oral surgery. After completing my training, I returned to the Madison area and have been calling it home ever since.

I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to build upon Dr. Brad Hartjes (founder of this practice) legacy with such a great team and practice partner alongside me. We have many long-term staff members who have the experience and expertise to help provide you with excellent dental care. This practice subscribes to the golden rule of treating people the way you would like to be treated and I promise both myself and my team will always do what is best for you and your family.

Providing my patients with the best experience and optimal treatment are of the highest priority to me. I am committed to staying on the leading edge of the latest proven advancements in dental technology and treatment so I can provide the most up-to-date and best care possible. I participate in many continuing education classes through the Greater Dane Dental Society, Wisconsin Dental Association, and the Chicago Dental Association. I am a member of the Seattle Study Club of Madison, which is a group of local dentists and specialists who discuss the latest techniques for treating different dental issues.

We are a private practice office owned completely by my partner, Dr. Joel, and myself. This style of practice is becoming more and more rare in todays healthcare/dental landscape. We have no outside influences or shareholders that could affect your dental experience and we are truly committed to providing the best quality and personalized care to our patients.

Dentistry is a rewarding career, but it would get a little dull without appreciating and cultivating the relationships I have with my patients. Everyone has their own unique story and I truly enjoy getting to know my patients beyond their smile. This keeps my life more interesting, but I also believe it allows me to be a better provider who can collaborate with my patients in finding and obtaining their ideal dental experience.

I was born and raised about an hour south of the Madison area in Rockford, Illinois. I am currently engaged and we have two adorable rabbits named Charlie and Sugar. My fiance and I are both looking forward to expanding our family in the future.

When I am not in the office, I enjoy biking and hiking around the area and beyond, eating something delicious from a local farmers market or one of the areas great restaurants, and visiting some of my favorite local spotsOlbrich Botanical Gardens and the Henry Vilas Zoo.

Hi, Im Ann. I have been a dental assistant since 1991 and joinedHartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) in2001. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and you can find me as Dr. Joels assistant. Interacting with our patients and doing my best to make sure their visits are pleasant and comfortable is very important to me. The strong bonds that we create with our patients make working at Hartstone (Hartjes)irreplaceable. That is why I have called the office my work home for many years. The friendships I have created with my coworkers that expands past our time together at the office is important to me, and is again one of the many things that makes working at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) exceptional!

When Im not at the office, you can find me with my daughter Jade,husband Mike and black lab Cosie. We love traveling and exploring the world, as well as the simple, everyday pleasures life offers us. I also enjoy music of all sorts, hanging out with friends, baking, and reading a great book.

Hi, my name is Crystal. I wasDr. Brads assistant for more than 15 years now I'm assisting Dr. Jon Szewczyk. Working with patients to keep them relaxed and comfortable during their visits is my main goal. I love to help ease their nerves by keeping them laughing, and make sure they feel confident with their smile when they leave our chair. I am also responsible for our OSHA and CPR training at the office, to keep our staff up to date with the latest medical and safety trainings.

When Im not at the office, you find me with my husband Josh, and our two kids, Carter and Violet. We keep busy doing things like camping and boating, and you can also find us chasing our seven chickens and rooster around our yard. I love staying active and participate in many charity and fun runs. Sometimes I convince my coworkers to join me in those runs, especially the annual Crazylegs Classic run in Madison every spring.

Hi, Im Mindy. I have been working at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) since2009. I have been working as a dental assistant for more than a decade. When you see me at the office, I will be assisting both doctors with various procedures. The best part of my job is being able to help the doctors maintain and create beautiful smiles. Working at Hartstone (Hartjes) has brought me career fulfillment as well as many great friends.

When Im not at the office, you can find me with my husband Mike, daughter Autumn, stepson Ashton, and our two dogsMalibuand Moose. I am a Badger sports fan and enjoy being outdoors as much as I can. In the spring and summer, I look forward to planting in my garden and spending time at my parent's camper at Merry Mac Campground.During the winter months, I enjoy attending meat raffles with my coworkers.

Hi, Im Jessica. I am registered dental hygienist graduate from MATC. Prior to choosing to pursue dental hygiene as a career, I went to UW Parkside and majored in health and fitness on a cross-country scholarship. I have been working at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) since 2018, but have been working as a dental hygienist for more than a decade. Educating our patients on oral hygiene and ways to maintain their proper oral health is very important to me. I have enjoyed talking with each of my patients and getting to know them, so that with each visit we continue to grow our relationships. The small family feel of Hartjes is what drew me to our practice, and allows me time to really connect with our patients and my co-workers.

Hi, Im Kari, and I have been a dental hygienist at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) since 2004. I pride myself on providing my patients a thorough and gentle cleaning, as well as teaching them proper care management for their smiles. It is important to me that I help my patients take great care of their teeth, and through the years, I have been able to get to know them as well as watch many of their children grow up. Working at Hartjes has given me the chance to work with amazing co-workers that make me excited to go to work.

When Im not at the office, you can find me on my funny farm with my husband Scott, our two boys Austin and Carson, six chickens, five horses, three goats, three dogs, and our cat. When we arent running around on our farm, you can find us camping and doing trail rides as a family. I love watching comedy movies because laughing is one of my favorite things to do.

Hi. Im Laura, one of the dental hygienists at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental). I have been working in my field for a decade and at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) since 2010. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is being able to ease patients fears about dentistry, and help them to actually enjoy their visits with us. You can find me providing dental cleanings for adults and children, as well as treatments for our periodontal patients. Through my years at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental), I find myself happy that I have developed such strong relationships with our patients and my co-workers. The patient-first and prevention focus of Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) reminds me of why I chose dental hygiene as my profession. When Im not busy at the office, you can find me doing things like boating and fishing with my husband,our two children and our labradoodle, Murray. I enjoy visiting Wisconsin Northwoods to go hiking and enjoy nature.I am a huge Packer and Badger football fan, and love a football season filled with friends, laughs, and, of course, a Packer and Badger win!

Hi, Im Kayla! I joined the Hartstone (Hartjes) Team in 2017. Prior to working to Hartstone (Hartjes), I worked for 15 years at the Cross Plains Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. I have always loved working face to face with patients,so when I started hereI knew I would love it! I truly value the friendships I have made with my co-workers. I have recently taken on additional roles within the office so you can find me doing anything from helping patients at the front desk to overseeing the business side.

My partner, Ben and I, welcomed our daughter Everly in June of 2020. We have two cats named Marlee and Lola, together they keep us busy at home. Some things that I enjoy while not being in the office are cooking and meal prepping, being outdoors doing just about anything, visiting breweries, staying active in my day-to-day life, and spending time with my friends and family.

Hi, Im Caitlin, and I have been working at Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) since September 2019. I have been working in the dental field since 2008 when I graduated from the dental assisting program at MATC. I was an orthodontic assistant for years and loved being part of improving patients smiles. Now you will find me at the front desk greeting our patients and helping in any way that I can.

I was born and raised in the Madison area but moved to Arizona for ten years where I met my husband Dave and had our son, David and daughter, Presley. We moved back to Wisconsin in 2018 to be closer to family. We love to go up to our family cabin to ride four-wheelers and dirt bikes. You will also find us boating on Lake Wisconsin and enjoying the lake life.
