Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Gum disease has two primary stages. If diagnosed and treated in the first stage, the condition can be reversed and tooth loss can usually be prevented. In order to prevent gum disease, practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year.

This stage only affects the soft tissue of the gums, and the patient may not experience any discomfort. Although the symptoms may be very mild, it is important to diagnose gum disease in this early stage before it progresses to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the name for more advanced periodontal disease and if permitted to progress to this point, not only the gums are affected but the bone structures supporting the teeth will be compromised.

A build-up of bacteria causes Gingivitis. In its early stages, inflammation around the gums is observable, with gum tissues appearing red and swollen. Gums that are easily irritated or that bleed during tooth brushing indicate the presence of Gingivitis. Removal of the plaque buildup is necessary to prevent the development of gum disease.

As the gums become more inflamed, they start to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces known as periodontal pockets. Food, bacteria, and plaque begin to collect in the pockets, leading to infection. The surrounding bone becomes damaged both by bacterial toxins and by the immune systemsresponse to infection.

Her motto, Creating Healthy Smiles through Science and Art embodies Dr. Harrisons vision for Harrison Dental Arts. She bases her recommendations on evidence and science, but her passion is the artistic components of dentistry which bring those recommendations to life. Her favorite aspect of dentistry is seeing how even small changes in someones smile can affect how they feel about themselves and can boost their self-confidence.

She is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and is committed to improving her skills through a wide variety of continuing education classes, including Spear Education seminars and study clubs.

She also enjoys cooking (and eating!), trying out all the restaurants in the Portsmouth area, and then relaxing by reading or watching the New England Patriots.

Maintaining oral health includes good home care and regular visits to our office for preventive care, which includes oral examinations and cleanings. Even with excellent care, however, teeth and gums can be susceptible to disease, infection, cavities, cracks, or other forms of damage.

Comprehensive examinations of the mouth, teeth, surrounding gum tissues, and supporting bone structures help with early detection and treatment of problematic conditions.Restorative dentistry is the aspect of dentistry that helps maintain oral and overall health even when the health of one or more teeth or the surrounding areas is compromised.

Restorative dentistry helps preserve natural teeth. The goal of restorative dentistry is to restore the function and integrity of the tooth structure, function, and health, while maintaining a natural appearance. We not only pay attention to the health and function of your teeth, but we also pay close attention to aesthetics. We want you to maintain great oral health but we also want you to have a beautiful smile and the confidence to smile often!

Everyone there is so nice, professional, and friendly! Such a calm and relaxing environment for anyone who is anxious about going to the dentist. Dr. Jill Harrison is very knowledgeable, and genuinly cares for her patients. Jill will suggest and discuss affordable options for whatever issues you might have, and not just delve into costly treatments. Although my husband and I live in Maine, we both agree that it's worth the drive.

As someone who has had a LOT of dental work done over the years, I can vouch for all the good things patients are saying about Harrison Dental Arts in these reviews. I have tried a number of dentists in the seacoast area, some very good, some not so good, but in my opinion, nobody else has put it all together like Dr. Harrison and her staff. UPDATE: I lost a crown from a front tooth late on a Thursday afternoon and was destined for an uncomfortable (and ugly) weekend, but Dr. Harrison was able to see me the very next morning and put things right. Much appreciated!

Dr. Harrison and her team are excellent in creating a comfortable environment to receive dental care. I was seen promptly for a filling that needed to be replaced and was causing sensitivity. Dr. Harrison did a wonderful job, the entire experience was painless, thorough and efficient. Plus everyone is so nice!

Before going here I thought the 5/5 rating with 50+ reviews was too good to be true, but now that I've been I know it deserves the rating. I went in for a regular cleaning and a follow-up repair on some chipped teeth the next day. The cleaning was comprehensive and both the hygienist and the dentist took time to explain their evaluations, recommendations for me, etc. The next day Dr. Harrison repaired three of my chipped teeth. It took less than an hour and the results look amazing. My favorite part by far was the receptionist giving me an invoice BEFORE I agreed to the procedure. Never thought the first google review I wrote would be for a dentist but here I am. Keep up the good work.

After recently moving to Maine from the Philadelphia suburbs and having the same dentist for 20 plus years I thought it would be a challenge finding another dentist that I would have as much confidence in until I became a patient of Dr Harrison. She and her staff are skilled, knowledgeable, and professional. I highly recommend Harrison Dental Arts.

My wife and I first discovered Dr. Jill Harrison when she was at another dental practice in the area. When she moved out on her own, we came along for the ride -- and have never regretted it. Her dental care is outstanding and she is quite personable as well (a real plus, as some dentists I have had in the past were nowhere near as pleasant). I have recommended her verbally to several -- and will continue to do so.

Moved to NH fr Virginia. I had a great dentist & Co there...and was hesitant about having to find another dentist up here. Did some decent research...on line, Best Docs, other neighbors and located Jill Harrison. I admit to being cynical when it comes to dental "franchises". I have some bad experiences with the quality of that kind of work. Now having said that... I HIGHLY Recommend Jill Harrison and her staff (Hygienist "Kim"). ABSOLUTELY top-notch professionals. Harrison owns her own practice and ends up being the "Chief Cook & Bottlewasher, as needed"...and she's building a GREAT practice. I was treated "gently" (which is important to me due to bad memories as a kid at the dentist)...yet given a very thorough examination & cleaning. I did NOT feel any sort of "pressure" at all for any sort of dental work. Lots of photos, x-rays, to show me "what was what" and what actually "needed" to be considered in the future. I did not that the office appears to have the latest "state of the art" in equipment, (which is a very good thing in dentistry). A dental practice is extremely expensive to set up, yet Harrison has invested in quality equipment and people. As a dental practice...I give them an "A+"...and I don't usually go anywhere near that sort of recommendation.

I highly recommend this practice to anyone in the area who is looking for a dentist. Even if you're not in the area... I live in Central Maine and started seeing them while in Portsmouth for a job. Genuinely every interaction has been incredibly pleasant and professional, the entire staff is friendly and I am quite happy to have stumbled upon them!! Can't recommend them enough!

I met Dr. Harrison years ago when she worked for another Dentist. When she left that practice I had to find her on my own and I'm glad I did. She has impeccable credentials and is the best Dentist I've ever had.
