Dr. Michael Hanley has had to pleasure of working with families for years, and his son, Dr. Pete Hanley, looks forward to doing the same.

Our office is completely digital, which can take the wait time and guesswork out of many aspects of your visit. Digital X-rays allow us to get a clearer image with less radiation, our 3d scanner eliminates the mouth impressions that used to be required for many procedures, and our intraoral camera lets our patients see what the dentist sees, so they have a better understanding of all procedures.

Each morning, I wake looking forward to the day ahead of me. Seeing my patients, whether they are established or new, sharing stories and laughter, and working with them toward exceptional oral health, makes my days rewarding.

When a new patient comes in, one who has had bad dental experiences in the past and has avoided care for some time, I know that I can help them. Providing reassurance, listening to their fears, and ensuring that all the treatments are free from pain and discomfort, and then seeing their rejuvenated smiles once treatment is complete, is incredible. The same is true when I work with the younger patients, who may be making their first visit to a dentist. For them, my staff and I strive to make their experience positive and fun.

I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1972, and then served in the United States Army until 1980. A firm believer in continuing education, because I know it is essential that I am able to provide my patients with up-to-date dental treatments and treatment options, I attend many lectures, seminars, and dental conferences each year. I am also an adjunct professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, and previously taught as a professor at the University of Texas, San Antonio Dental School.

I believe in giving back to the community. Each year I participate in the Virginia Dental Associations Donated Dental Services, Missions of Mercy projects, the Give Kids a Smile day, and the Lucy Corr Village dental clinic.

While caring for my patients keeps me busy, I find some time to relax. However, I like to stay active, so relaxing for me often involves golfing, skiing, and exercising. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and my lovely wife of many years, and watching sports while settled into my recliner, with my two beagles in my lap.

I attended local Missions of Mercy projects as an undergraduate student and look forward to continuing to be a part of these wonderful endeavors as a dentist. Our practice participates in Give Kids a Smile day annually.

Outside of the practice my time is spent with my beautiful wife McKenzie, our new son, Jack and our dog, Bentley. McKenzie and I got married in 2015 while living in Utah during my second year of dental school. We are an active family that loves to ski, hike, camp, travel, play soccer, and spend time with friends and family.

Our patients are the nicest, most interesting people! Each day I hear new stories, learn new things, and laugh with our patients, which makes me look forward to coming into our practice in the morning. My job entails overseeing our scheduling, checking patients in and out, handling our employee paperwork and payroll, tracking our office statistics, and the marketing, too.

Because I am married to Dr. Mike Hanley, I get to work with my best friend, and when we go home, its to our two beagles. I enjoy golfing in the warm weather, skiing in the colder times of the year, and traveling. But my favorite times are those spent with our four adult children.

The best part of my job is having the ability to provide options to my patients, in order to create the smile they have always wanted. I also enjoy helping patients learn about the correlation of their dental health to their overall health and general well-being. I do many things at our practice, including chart review, taking medical histories, patient education, taking radiographs, performing debridement, scaling and root planing, applying fluoride treatments, and doing VisiLite screenings. I also develop treatment plans, track consent forms, coordinate treatments with specialists, and obtain referrals. In other words, I keep busy.

Working one-on-one with each of our patients, helping them learn about good oral hygiene and home-care processes, as well as taking X-rays, detecting and treating periodontal disease, identifying gingivitis, and performing oral pathology screenings, keeps me busy. I learn something new from each patient and enjoy hearing about their lives and interests. Over time, we get to know each other and look forward to a chance to catch up when they come in for exams and treatments.

At our practice, I assist Dr. Mike Hanley with all chairside procedures. Being there with our patients, seeing to it that they are relaxed and happy, makes me feel good, and I love it that each day brings new experiences. I know that I am making a positive difference in peoples lives, and not everyone can say that about their work. When I go home at night, its with a smile on my face.
