Dr. Nathan attended undergrad at Mississippi State University, graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in 2003, and then completed a two-year residency specializing in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005.

During his pediatric residency, Dr. Nathan was extensively trained in all aspects of pediatric dentistry. This included (but was not limited to): growth and development of the pediatric dental patient, preventive and restorative dentistry, advanced behavior management techniques, sedation dentistry, hospital dentistry, trauma, orthodontics (braces), and treating patients with special needs.

Dr. Nathan treated pediatric dental patients in a private practice in Nashville, TN for 9 years (2005-2014). This time and experience allowed him to fine tune his skills as a pediatric dentist, especially from a communication and behavior management standpoint.

Dr. Nathan and his wife Vanessa then moved to New Orleans in 2014, and took over the long-standing and well-respected practice of Dr. Ronald Curran. Dr. Curran hand-picked Dr. Nathan as his choice to continue the wonderful customer service and excellent pediatric dentistry that Dr. Curran provided to so many parents and children throughout his career. The two of them worked side by side for 6 months, before Dr. Curran fully retired. Dr. Nathan is at the practice everyday and looks forward to continuing and improving our remarkable practice.

Conservative in his treatment philosophy, Dr. Nathan believes in fully explaining all procedures and options in a manner that everyone can understand. He prides himself on being professional, friendly, compassionate, and honest. He takes the time to answer all questions that any child or parent may have. Dr. Nathan believes in treating everyone as he himself would want to be treated.

Born in Houma, LA, and raised in Natchez, MS, Dr. Nathan was always looking for an opportunity to move closer to his family. He and his wife Vanessa are very excited to make New Orleans their home and are extremely thrilled to help Great Big Smiles continue to be a wonderful place for all children and parents. They have two young daughters, Clara and Campbell.

The dental hygienists and Dr. Burns were both ALL amazing with my daughter who is afraid of any type of "doctor!" It was such a breath of fresh air to not be given dirty looks just because my child is afraid of the dentist. I HIGHLY recommend this practice!

Dr Burns and the medical staff are the best I have ever encountered. They best! For 2.5 years they have been the best we've ever gone to. The last 3 times the front desk staff have erased it all. By repeatedly being very difficult to work with and not even saying sorry once for all the grief they cause. Dr Burns and his medical staff, the BEST bedside manner. It pains me to say, the front desk and office staff lack basic customer service skills or they just don't care, it's hard to tell. Either way, it's not worth dealing with them to get to the Dr. Even with how amazing Dr Burns is. And it's amazing. He's talked to us on evening and weekend. He calls, he texts, he looks at photos if we can't come in. His systems for texting and website make communication easy...with him. However, it's a different story with the 'admin' staff. They won't return phone calls, reply to texts texts or emails. And yet, they will blame the customer. Until you show them how you tried and tried. Show them it was them that didn't communicate. And do they apologize ? Nope, even then you will not get so much as a sorry or an apology. Check in is a jungle if their computer system isn't working. And only one person knows how it works. Every else just pushes keys. Of course they apologize for this right? Nope! Don't ask questions when information about your family is wrong. You won't get your questioned answered you will get, "I don't know" "I'm just doing what I'm told" "that's not my problem". I get it, computer systems get stuff wrong, they have technical problems but the customer isn't in charge of the computer system or the credit card payment system or insurance system or any of that. Checking in takes 30-40 mins while they try to figure stuff out. Then there is money. They over charge. They mess up insurance, confusing it with other peoples. Charge the wrong copays. Charge for copays they shouldn't. It's a nightmare. The people in the back are magical. You will have decide if it's worth it to get to them. The back medical the front is at best tolerable if you literally say "I'm here." Anything more and prepare yourself. I'm sad to go Dr. Your medical staff is amazing. I hope you can work out the kinks. You have a beautiful thing.

FAMILIES BEWARE! CHEATS MILITARY FAMILIES, REFUSED FO REFUND CREDIT CARD, WE WILL NOT RETURN! We've been coming to Great Big Smiles since 2020. We really, really love Dr. Burns. The front office staff has made it such that we just cannot keep coming. The front office staff insisted that there was a problem with our insurance (it showed fine on our end) and refused to start seeing our children until it appeared in their system. We waited 40 minutes, trying to resolve it. We offered to pay for the service if they would refund when insurance confirmed it was active. We were told the refund would be started today if insurance confirmed. We paid upfront. They told us that, after waiting 40+ minutes with our three children, they would have to "fit us in" and put us at the back of the line--behind all of the people who arrived after us. Before the appointment was complete, we had the insurance company on the phone verifying that it would cover all costs. They refused to refund our credit card for the upfront payment. We wasted an hour of our time and paid $245 because the front office staff could not get themselves together, or perceive of a way to get our care complete. I have never, ever had such terrible customer service at a dentist's office. For extra fun, we also had the insurance company confirm that the office overcharged us at our last appointment, which we had insisted at length, and they're also refusing to process that refund. We paid $300 to receive completely covered care, NONE OF WHICH IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REFUNDED, and, cumulatively, wasted almost 2 hours of our time managing the front office staff. This dentist is phenomenal, but no one is worth this. Please, learn from our experiences and DO NOT GO HERE.

My girls especially one of my twin girls was very nervous to go to the dentist. And they were so kind and caring! They took their time to make them feel comfortable. And also explained everything to me in a calm and caring manner. And while getting the work done they do things in a way where the children do not realize what tools they will actually be using. Such as the drill. The dentist took off the tip and told them he would just be blowing the sugar bugs out. So they had no idea he was even drilling. They are truly amazing!! We traveled a bit further just to go to Great Big Smiles because they were highly referred by my girls regular dentist. And I know why! It was definitely worth the drive to go to a dentist who specializes in children. And it's obvious they love what they do and love children! And they went above and beyond to make we all felt comfortable. My girls had everything done with no tears. And they received tokens everytime they got a big portion done. And were so excited and more focused on using the coins when done than what the dentist was doing! I highly recommend Great Big Smiles!! My daughter who is always nervous to go to the dr or dentist is actually excited about going back still a bit nervous but excited that she will earn her coins when all done! And that never happens with her. Thank you so much to all the staff and dentist at Great Big Smiles!!

Dr. Nathan Burns and his staff at Great Big Smiles are simply the best. This was our first timing visiting their office, and they will be the only office that we see for our childrens' dental needs going forward. They are warm, welcoming, gentle, and thorough. Both Dr. Nathan and his hygienist explained everything that was being done - before, during, and after. My son has some special needs that make dental visits challenging for him - he was fully accommodated with no questions or issues and his cleaning and exam were done thoroughly and efficiently. If you're looking for a pediatric and adolescent dentist, I'd look no further.

UPDATE: After my visit today with my 3 little ones, I felt the need to add another review here. I first came here in 2017 with my 4 year old son and had to get extensive work. Dr.Nathan treated him so well that I knew there was no other place I'd rather take him and my other kids to. He is now almost 9 and I am now coming with my 5 year old daughter and almost 2 year old daughter. We have recently been seen by Amy and Dr.Brent who are just as great! I am just so grateful that I found this place- no better pediatric dental office out there! Awesome atmosphere for kids and the nicest staff ever.. only complaint would be that there isn't separate rooms or 'privacy' for your appt, everyone is right next to everyone else.. but it seems to be a good thing for the kids, puts them at ease to be right there next to other kids. Dr.Burns is very nice, great with the kids and very thorough when it comes to explaining what's going on and what needs to be done.. Definitely recommend.
