Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose and treat problems with the position, alignment or spacing of the teeth, and related irregularities in the face and the jaw. We use a number of special treatments, including braces and other oral appliances, to correct these problems.

There are two major reasons: aesthetics and function. Having an aesthetically pleasing smile will not only change the way people see you, but will enhance your own self-image and confidence as well. Orthodontic treatment will, most importantly, allow your teeth and bite to function better, making it easier to keep them clean and improve your overall health.

You're never too old to begin orthodontic treatment but if you start at an earlier age, many problems may be easier and to correct. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child who may need orthodontic treatment should be seen for a first evaluation around age 7.

Teeth that are protruding, crowded together or erupting out of position are often clear indications that treatment is needed (View Examples). Less obvious signs are mouth breathing, frequent biting of the cheek or lips, speech difficulties, and thumb sucking that goes past 3-4 years of age. If teeth don't come together properly when the mouth closes, or if jaws make sounds or shift as they move, this may also indicate an orthodontic problem.

Having braces put on is generally painless. Some people experience minor aches and pains in the first couple of days after the braces are placed until they adjust to wearing their appliances. Periodic adjustments may sometimes cause tenderness as well, though it typically lasts only a short time. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to alleviate any discomfort, but are usually unnecessary.

It will be a different timeline for every person, but generally the active stages of treatment (wearing braces or other appliances) may take anywhere from 6-30 months. Afterwards, a retainer should be worn long-term in order to keep all the teeth in the corrected and straight position.

It depends on the treatments being done that will determine how often you (or your child) will need to be monitored. During active orthodontic treatment, you will typically come in to our office once every 6 to 8 weeks.

If your teeth are severely crowded (because your mouth isn't sized to properly accommodate all of them) or if you have impacted teeth (teeth that are trapped beneath the gum line) then extraction may be necessary. In the case of younger patients, we may recommend you visit your dentist to have some primary teeth removed, but this early treatment may help to prevent any future permanent tooth extraction.

Yes we recommend that you pass up the types of foods that could become trapped in your braces or damage and break them. Some of these include raw vegetables, hard candies, caramels, taffy and ice cubes (fortunately, ice cream is OK). When you get your braces on will give you a list of recommended foods to avoid and answer any questions.

Yes! Of course, whether you wear braces or not, we recommend you wear a mouthguard when playing most sports. Musicians are generally able to play their instruments just as they did before, but it may require a short adjustment period after getting braces.

Yes and in fact, it is more important than ever to continue seeing your dentist regularly! Keeping teeth free of plaque (and potentially, decay) can be challenging when you have braces and your dentist can help you avoid these problems with frequent dental cleanings and exams.

Almost always, the answer is yes! Your teeth want to return to the position they started in and if you don't wear a retainer, your teeth can rapidly shift then all the effort put into your treatment is lost! Your retainer helps you maintain a straight and healthy smile for a lifetime.

Orthodontic care is a long-term investment in your (or your child's) health and well-being. The cost for orthodontics hasn't increased as fast as many other consumer prices and many financing options are available to meet your needs and make orthodontic care affordable. Weighed against the true cost of living with problem teeth, however, orthodontic treatment is a worthwhile investment indeed.

The Magic of Orthodontics Proper alignment of the teeth is basic to Smile Design. Their position dictates how they work together and affects the way you look and smile. Only orthodontic treatment can move teeth into the right position. Simply put, when things look right, they probably are right. Orthodontics for the Older Adult Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so there's no such thing as too old for braces. In fact, nowadays about one out of every five orthodontic patients is an adult. Yet this figure represents only a small portion of adults who could actually benefit from orthodontic treatment... Read Article

Dr. Graf prepped me for full upper and lower jaw surgery and took my teeth from looking like a 5 to a 10 in just under a year. Ive got a cleft lip and pallet and that was no issue for the team. My only issue I had was my appointments usually took about 2hrs. Sometimes more and sometimes less. I was in school so I just took the wait time to study.

Since Dr Graph left, the new Dr does good work and is nice, however our appointments consistently take over an hour to an hour and a half. It's has become very frustrating. My kids have also been loosing brackets recently since they changed Thier adhesive... and I just can't find an hour in my life to bring them in for a repair.

We loved Dr. Graf for my older daughters. However, things have been going downhill, even before Dr. Graf left. It takes forever to get appointments and they take forever to treat you. We have had to reschedule occasionally for conflicts and it can be another month or two before we can get in, even when we need a short appointment. When we go to appointments, it often takes at least an hour to get called back to get work done. Last December I had to schedule my two kids at different times on the same day because they have different schedules. I was at the orthodontist for over 5 hours. I just don't have as much confidence in Dr. Reid as I did in Dr. Graf. I think I am going to take my youngest to another orthodontist.

I do not like to rate this low, especially for a business with such good providers, but the waiting can be SO long. There does not appear to be a good balance between providers and staffing, which can make or break an experience. Depending on your travel time, consider blocking off 3-4 hours of your day to be safe.

We love Dr. Graf!! I was worried about my kids having a bad braces experience, but it has been so awesome from the very first time we met Dr. Graf. So grateful for the dedication to happy teeth and happy patients! One update though. So my daughter had an adult tooth come in perpendicular, so she needed braces, but after she had them on her gums got really inflamed, like growing on top of the braces inflamed. They just kept suggesting she brush better, and we did! I was concerned this was an allergic reaction to the metal in the braces, but they just brushed that off. We had to move and got her braces off somewhere else and as soon as the braces were off the gums went back to normal within a week. This is after months and months of her gums being inflamed. Dr. Graf and his staff are SO KIND and SO GENTLE, which is super important, but I wish they had taken my intuition more seriously because having inflamed gums for so long isn't good for my child's health.

I am very frustrated with this place. Was told it would take a year for my daughters braces, we are now coming up on 2 years. When we got her bottom row put on my daughter experienced some discomfort, and was told to come back for the top row. It took over 3 months to get in to get this done. To be fair,, this was in part due to covid. They are very overbooked, yet seem desperate for new patients, I can't understand this as they don't take care of the ones they have. Yesterday we came in for a tighten, my daughter was taken back for over an hour. I was in danger of not being able to pick up my other children from school. When my daughter came up front, she told me that she had been taken to a chair, then her tech promptly went on break for 30 Minutes! leaving her alone. I asked the receptionist if this was normal behavior for their business, and she mumbled something about waiting for the doctor first. Very unprofessional. The cookies are nice I guess...

"I really like it! This place is good! And I'm not overestimating it! Everyone is really nice, plus it doesn't hurt."-straight from the kid who's got the braces. Dr. Graf really knows his stuff and his staff is great.

I really can't say enough good about my whole experience getting Invisalign at Graf orthodontics. I've been through a lot of pain for years because my teeth were not coming together right and causing me to clench at night. I went in to see if Invisalign would help and it did. I don't clench near as much and don't have the pain that I used to endure and it's so nice to not have big spaces between my molars where food was getting caught and best of all, I have more confidence with a beautiful smile and straight teeth. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Also the staff was amazing!! So friendly and professional.
