I was fortunate to have a great orthodontist when I was growing up and my time in orthodontic treatment was positively life-changing. My goal since then has always been to become an orthodontic specialist so that I could share that experience with others. I attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida for my undergraduate studies and am an avid fan of college sports (Go Noles!).
I achieved my bachelors degree in biological sciences, chemistry, and physics. I was also proud to contribute to original genetic research funded by the American Cancer Society. I received my dental education at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was elected to serve as class president and student body president. I graduated at the top of my class and was recognized for my leadership and dedication to the profession with the Chancellors Award for Excellence.
I was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. I completed my orthodontic residency at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. There, I was able to learn from distinguished faculty and gain experience with many cutting edge orthodontic techniques, including mini-implant TADs, accelerated tooth movement, and 3D imaging. Upon graduation, I received my Certificate in Orthodontics, as well as my Masters degree for my research thesis studying the effects of jaw position on breathing and sleep apnea.
Outside the office, you can find me spending time with my wife, Katie and our amazing kids, James and Juliette. We live in the Masons Bend community of Fort Mill and absolutely love our neighborhood! My family is my biggest passion and no success in the world would be worth it without their constant love and support.
We love to go out to eat (SPICE and NAPA are always top contenders!), travel to new places and spend time outside. We enjoy camping, hiking, snow sports, and kayaking down the Catawba River! I believe that family is one of the most important aspects of a fulfilled life and I am incredibly excited to build the GoClear Orthodontics family.

If you are looking for a orthodontist that actually cares, this facility is so awesome, the staff is committed . I look forward to allowing them to help change my smile they are more than expected. I think I love them all.

Fantastic experience. The staff is always super friendly and they have accommodated to my schedule on multiple occasions. I've had to reschedule twice and there was absolutely no issue with the GoClear Columbia office. They also text you updates and reminders which is a nice feature. While staff, location, and facilities are certainly important (and they're all top notch here)...the expertise of the orthodontist is at the top of the list of importance. I went to two different orthodontists prior to GoClear so I could get multiple opinions and see who I wanted to make the investment with. Dr. Avey was the only orthodontist to explain exactly how he was going to use Invisalign to fix my issues. The other two orthodontists simply scanned my teeth and said "this is what it will look like after a year." They didn't even consider rubber bands or attachments after scanning my teeth. Dr. Avey, however, analyzed my teeth and came up with a plan that was custom-tailored to me not only to straighten my teeth, but to also fix bite issues. The other orthodontists were only analyzing how to straighten teeth and made no mention of other issues. It seemed like I wasn't really going to get what I was paying for until I visited with GoClear. Nonetheless, I was immediately sold after speaking with Dr. Avey. The other orthodontists wanted me to use an app to monitor my progress and not ever go in person, which seemed odd. Dr. Avey, however, sets up appointments with me every other month to monitor progress and change/modify my aligners. He really does his due diligence and I cannot recommend GoClear enough. I'm happy I went with them. Dr. Avey is always friendly but more importantly, he really knows what he's doing and seems to care about the clients. Braces/Invisalign is a costly and important investment. You want to make sure you choose the right establishment. This is the one. Oh, and they also polish/buff your teeth which is a nice perk.

Such an amazing staff at GoClear!! They are so friendly and welcoming every single visit we have there! If you have any questions day or night they will always answer you anytime. You could not ask for a better orthodontist Dr. Avey is the sweetest, so gentle, and very knowledgeable. Give them a call if you are thinking about clear aligners just talk to them they will help you decide which way to go, they do not push anything on you!
