Dr Swain grew up as a military brat who was born and raised in England until the age of 11. After moving to the US he lived in Florida, Louisiana and Alaska before attending Western Oregon State College where he graduated summa cum laude, earning his degrees in Biology and Psychology. He then attended Oregon Health Sciences University for his DMD degree, graduating with honors in 2000. A week after graduation he got married to his wife, Karen, a dental hygienist whom he met in dental school and moved to the warmth and sunshine of Gilbert, AZ. After working as an associate for two years, he started Gilbert Smiles from scratch in 2002. The office has thrived from the beginning based upon hard work, a commitment to excellence and having a great staff and team of associated specialists.

My experiences with Dr. Swain and various technicians for both cleanings and dental work have been outstanding. I get high anxiety surrounding dental visits and they take care to acknowledge that at every visit, making these appointments by far the best dental visits I've ever had. My smile is changed for the better!

You know how sometimes you read reviews and you think "they must be exaggerating" or "they can't be that nice" well all the reviews were right! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Our family had a lot of dental needs and this dentist office has been amazing!!! The nurses are kind! My boys always felt at peace (even my 3 year old). The front desk is so helpful and patient. And Dr Swain is great!!! I loved how understanding and genuine he seemed about all my questions. Definitely recommend this place.

I was referred by family - I have not been to a dentist in years (won't say how long but it's been a long time) the staff made me feel comfortable and explained to me everything they were doing - the Doc was awesome- he explained what he found and is working on a treatment plan. He's definitely all about what best for his patients! I will be back

UPDATE: Aug 2022 I have been going here for a little while now and Dr. Swain and his staff are truly the best. If you want to be taken care of by the best dentist come to this office. Dr Swain has received awards for best dentist since like 2012 or earlier. He and his staff are friendly, knowledgeable and really just do a top-notch job. This is my first visit at Gilbert Smiles and I have to say that I have never been to a practice that is this friendly, courteous, professional and just all around amazing! From the greeting to the end I can't say how great this office is run. It is immaculate, organized and has state of the art equipment. Krystal took my Xrays and she couldn't have been more nice and a true pleasure to talk to. Stacy did my cleaning and she is awesome!! Dr. Swain is so knowledgeable, very detail oriented, thorough and personable. I am SO happy that I am now a client of theirs as I feel that I am getting the best care in AZ!! Thank you so much to everyone!

I used to hate going to the dentist still I started going to Gilbert Smiles. The hygienists are friendly and helpful and don't leave your mouth in pain after a cleaning.

My sons went to Gilbert Smiles 1st, and they (13, 12 and 12) couldn't say enough about how kind and gentle Dr. Swink was. To say I was skeptical is an understatement, I have never enjoyed visiting the dentist, BUT from the second I stepped through the doors of this absolutely adorable office I felt completely comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly and I enjoyed speaking with them during my extremely breif wait. I was taken back for my x-rays and the tech was friendly and again I felt comfortable. My dental hygienist was wonderful, she understood my dental fear and was extremely gentle and made sure I was comfortable and always knew what she was doing. Lastly when Dr. Swink came in I was all but ready to get anxiety, but that never happened. Dr. Swink was fantastic. He answered all of my questions and made sure I was informed of my treatment plan and gave me straight answers and allowed me to make my own choices on how to move forward. I can honestly say I'm still a little anxious about completing my treatment but I am not fearful like I was going into the office. My family and I will continue going to Gilbert Smiles, because a good dentist is hard to find, but to find compassion, knowledge, humor AND a staff that matches is like a unicorn!
