Dr. Douvas received his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology, in 1980, from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. After working in Paris, France in transplantation immunology, he moved back to Denver and focused on infection immunity at the Webb-Waring Lung Institute, also part of the Health Sciences Center. He received his D.D.S. from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in 1989, afterward completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program. Dr. Douvas then moved his laboratory from the Webb-Waring Lung Institute, to the School of Dentistry, where he focused on AIDS-related infections. 1989 also marked the year he established his dental practice in Idaho Springs. Initially working part-time in Idaho Springs, and part time at the Health Sciences Center, the practice ultimately grew to five days a week, leading him to the decision to work full-time in his dental practice.
