February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

My hygienist, Lynn was very thorough. I was quite pleased with my visit. I met the new dentist for the first time and was pleased with him also. The office personnel have always been great.

I have been a patron of the Gentle Dentist over 14 years. The staff and doctors provide exceptional service at a very reasonable cost. The staff has always been courteous, friendly and very professional. My family appreciates the quality of care and professionalism provided to us all over the years. We will continue to be patrons for years to come. Updated 12/21/2021: I am still receiving the highest level of care, professionalim, courtesy, and prompt service over many years as a loyal patron/customer. I thank Doctor Harris for her many years of devoted service to my family and miss her presence. I welcome the new doctor replacing Doctor Harris and hope her years are prosperous. Merry Christmas and Happy New to the "awesome staff" at Indiana Gentle Dentist-Eagle Creek. As of 10/5/2022 the dental office has added a new dentist and 2 new hygienist. The service was still superb. Thanks for maintaining your professional service even with staff transitions.

The staff, dental hygienists, and dentist are always very friendly and accommodating! They also explain every part of your treatment plan throughly, and my sons like how attentive and gentle they are! The best dental office we've ever been to!!

I have been going to the Gental dentist for many years and they have always treated me with respect and took care of my dental problems. I plan on coming back for a long time. i I had a cap fall off my tooth and they were able to get me in the same day and put a temp cap on till a new cap can be made. great job and thanks for the quick response.

Dr. Desai discharged me, but had never even met me. The office manager was responsible. This location holds to once periodontal, always periodontal. Not all dentists agree. Be careful!
