Dr. Nielsen was born and raised in the Bay Area and is so grateful to be able to raise his family in the beautiful county of Marin. Dr. Nielsen majored in Zoology at Brigham Young University before attending dental school at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco where he graduated in the top of his class and was inducted into the Tau Kappa Omega dental honor society. Dr. Nielsen obtained his postdoctoral masters degree and completed his certification in orthodontics at the University of Colorado. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, California Dental Association and the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics.

When not in the office, Dr. Nielsen keeps very busy with his family. He and his wife, Bethany, are the proud parents of Evan, Dallin, Korra, Jace and Maggie. Weekends are usually spent attending various sporting events or hiking and exploring the beaches and trails of Marin and beyond. He has a gift for capturing the beauty in this world as witnessed in his own photos hanging in the office. Come and see!

My kid is 10 days away from having his braces removed. A rite of passage he's more than a little anxious about. For me, the idea that I'll see a perfect smile when that happens is beyond joyous. Like mine when I was a child, his smile pre-metal was at best a train wreck. It didn't keep him from laughing out loud, but he was very aware of the mess. The news he'd be getting braces made him as giddy 2 1/2 years ago as having them removed now does. In 30+ months of visits, he hasn't had 1 complaint. He comes out of Dr. Gast's office laughing & joking. Every time. Dr. Gast is wonderful. The team is fabulous. And the post-visit Chinese Food at Ming's in the shopping center is a crowd pleaser. No regrets. Dr. Gast & the team are the bomb.

Approximately 30 years ago, Gary was my orthodontist in Berkeley, California. He was in practice with a much older pediatric orthodontist who called me "honey" and "sweetie" - for a leather-jacket and boot wearing 14 year old punk, that wasn't very endearing. Gary, on the other hand, was wonderful, joked around without ever being corny, was sensitive and kind, fast and painless. He always talked straight to me and never sugarcoated anything, and even told me that just because my parents wanted me to have braces, if I didn't want it, it was my mouth and he wouldn't put anything in without my OK. I don't know if he's still working or has retired, but if he is still working I recommend him wholeheartedly. I had many visits with him from age 13 to age 17, and while my bite is not perfect, it is infinitely better than it was before I was his patient, and I have fond memories of his office and his chairside manner.
