Fredericksburg Smile Center - General dentist in Fredericksburg, VA

Dr. Joel Butterworth, son of Fredericksburg Smile Center founder Dr. Cathie Hidalgo, is a native of the area. Dr. Butterworth grew up in Bowling Green and Fredericksburg where he graduated from Fredericksburg Academy. Dr. Butterworth attended The College of Charleston and graduated with a B.S. in Biology and received minors in Political Science and Spanish. He received his D.D.S from Howard University College of Dentistry in 2015. Upon graduation, Dr. Butterworth completed a General Practice Residency at the Portland VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Working with veterans, he has extensive training in hospital dentistry and clinical experience with medically compromised patients. In addition to advanced work in all fields on dentistry, Dr. Butterworths training includes advanced anesthesia and pain control, TMJ disorders, dental oncology and emergency medicine. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, golf, tennis, cooking and traveling.

We perform many oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures at our Fredericksburg office. Our doctors have extensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of oral health conditions. Our Oral Surgeon is board certified in his specialty and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is highly skilled in implants, wisdom teeth removal, full arch rehabilitation, bone grafting, sinus augmentations, impacted canines and facial trauma.

We take great pride in our wide-range of general, cosmetic and speciality dental offerings from pediatric dentistry to services like Invisalign, Cerec same day crowns and dental implants. To help ease anxiety, we also offer sedation dentistry.

Restorative dentistry is not just about improving the look of your teeth. Replacing or repairing teeth is vital for your dental health and for preserving your other teeth. When you have emptyspaces in your mouth, you can put stress on your natural teeth because there is not as much surface area for chewing.

MD causes significant pain, as the discs wear down and bone becomes exposed. Symptoms include soreness of the area around the joints, pain while chewingortalkin g,facial pain, a clicking of the joints andin severe casesdislocation of the jaw, which locks in an open mouth position. If you are suffering with these symptoms, you should see your dentist. The disorderneeds to be differentiated from other causes of facial pain.

We use a number of effective techniques to make your dental experience a calm and relaxing one, and conscious sedation is a preferred alternative for those who are nervous about dental care or those who want to have multiple dental procedures accomplished in one visit. You dont find this approach everywhere, because it requires special attention and equipment its one of the things that makes Smile Center unique.

You might need oral surgery for a lot of reasons. Most common is removal of your wisdom teeth, but oral surgery can also be a part of treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems, replacing missing teeth, and repairing a facial injury. We have an oral surgeon on staff at our facility, so we can take care of you right here in our office!

Pediatric dentistry focuses on the oral health and development of infants and children through their adolescent years. Your dentist will ensure that your childs teeth are developing properly and will evaluate the need for any orthodontics.

Endodontics is another word for root canal treatment. If you have an infected tooth, and the infection has spread to the surrounding pulp or into the nerve, you need a root canal. A root canal is a procedure in whichour dentist will remove the infected pulp, and the nerve if necessary. Our dentist will then seal the opening to prevent any future infection.

Fredericksburg Smile Centers Dr. Joel Butterworth is proud to be the #1 Platinum Invisalign dentist in Fredericksburg, Virginia. For both teens and adults, clear aligners have changed the face of dentistry forever.

For a long time, people thought the only thing that could replace teeth were big, bulky dentures. Today, our office in Fredericksburg, VA has dental implants to give you a comfortable, long-lasting, beautiful smile that you dont have to take out before bed!

Invisalign is a great option for teenagers, young adults, and older adults who want straighter teeth but want to get them in a discrete way. Many people who are beginning to research Invisalign have the impression that Invisalign consists of simple trays that you slip in and out of your mouth. While this is true, there is also a lesser-known aspect of Invisalign that people should keep in mind. This is the Invisalign attachment, which are small buttons placed on oddly shaped, angled, or sized teeth to help with alignment correction.

There are a number of Invisalign attachment types. Attachments generally come as a triangular, square, or circular shape depending on the type and purpose of the attachment. These attachments are usually placed on the middle of the tooth and are tooth-colored to help keep them as invisible as possible. The type of attachment you receive will depend on if your goal is fixing a tooth extrusion, intrusion, or rotation.

Attachments are used as anchors for the Invisalign aligners so that your Invisalign fits better and works more effectively as you wear them. This will result in straighter teeth with a faster, smoother process.

Not every person will require attachments, as it varies per person and per plan, but attachments do allow more people access to Invisalign. This is because attachments allow more tooth movements that would be impossible without them.

To help prevent stains, anytime that one chooses to drink a darker beverage, using a straw should help prevent any stain. If the attachments become visibly stained, it is recommended to discuss this with your dentist to see if they have any solution to help whiten the stain. They are able to assist with this whitening.

All this place cares about is money and not the well being of the patient!!!! I suggest you to beware or you will be the next victim. They are nice until they are not. The tactics that they use are not honorable at all!!! Update to the owners unprofessional response: So when someone tells the truth you resort to lying about what really happened!!! Threatened??? We know that is false information, but clearly it is the narrative that you want to paint to make yourselves look good! Sometimes the truth is what it is. Be professional and own it!

Ambience of the office provides a calm feeling when you know you're getting your teeth pulled out!!!! Nothing better than reassurance of staff and Drs. that everything will be ok! I HATE the dentist because I have the worse anxiety!! But this office was well prepared to deal with my fears and I'm forever grateful for that! Now I can smile with confidence again!!! Thank you Fredericksburg Smile

Loved this office from day 1. Aside from their highly decorative waiting room and great front desk personnel, my kid's dentist Dr Diguardia and Dr Butterworth, is thorough and patient.

I had my new patient appointment here today and had a mostly great experience. I am not a fan of the dentist but do not have any anxiety about going back and they staff made me feel comfortable right from the beginning. Pros: The waiting area is beautiful and comfortable They took me for my appointment right on time Every single staff member was kind, helpful, and knowledgeable The area where you get your cleaning done is not private rooms but still felt very private They offered numbing gel if they thought there would be an significant discomfort during the cleaning (I had a couple trouble spots and the gel was great) Cons (there are a few, but I will still be happily returning) My new patient appointment took significantly longer than I had expected, it would be a lovely courtesy to be informed that the added x-rays and pictures will add to the time so you can better plan for time off work or childcare. My teeth have shifted since my days in braces, and while they weren't overly pushy, they did seem to really promote Invisalign to straighten them again. I've never had a dentist show any concern over the slight shift my teeth took and the cost of Invisalign combined with the incredibly luxurious office space made me a little curious if there is an extra monetary benefit to them for getting Invisalign patients. I could be over thinking, of course, but it did make me wonder a bit. I asked a friend who works in an orthodontics office her thoughts and she agreed that shifting teeth can lead to more issues, but she also said that dentists can only do Invisalign and seeing an orthodontist would give me more options and a possible better outcome because the orthodontist can make manual changes to your treatment plan. I was not told that seeing an orthodontist would provide this and perhaps it was just expected that I know that. The dentist was quick to see me, very friendly and thorough but fast. I did have to wait a bit between seeing the dentist and getting the cleaning, they asked if I still wanted it or if I wanted to come back because I agreed to a deep cleaning for some troublesome molars. I had already been there an hour and a half and of course wanted it done while I was there. I was a little frustrated with the wait between agreeing to still get it and actually getting it but it went quick, my hygenist, Lindsay or Laura I think, was lovely. I have a lot of anxiety about going to the dentist but they put me right at ease and I am happy to go back. I just like to have a detailed review when I'm researching my health care so I hope this helps someone!

I've been coming here with my whole family for the past 2-3 years. I usually schedule way in advance because I try to schedule myself and 4 of my kids on the same visit. Smile Center always comes through with great timing. Staff is really friendly and helpful with me and my kids. Last time I was here, I had my 7 month old with me and while I was getting my teeth cleaned, she started crying and one of the female hygienist was kind enough to hold her for a few minutes until I was done. Their office is also very modern and decorated really nice. We love it here
