Braces have several components, like brackets, wire and elastics, that help turn crooked or misaligned teeth into beautiful smiles. Through gentle pressure, braces move the teeth, which makes teeth around them loosen from the gum line over time. When teeth get straighter, they dont move as much, so the bone grows to support their new positions in the mouth. After treating patients for over 35 years, writing articles for numerous dental publications and teaching at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Salvatoriello knows all about braces and other orthodontic treatments. Below, youll find info Dr. Sal shares with his patients on how to making living with braces easier.
Knowing all we do about braces, one thing is clear: brushing and flossing is extremely important. When orthodontic devices, or braces, are present in the mouth, the amount of food that can accumulate on or near the teeth increases.
To avoid plaque buildup and cavities, make sure to brush carefully after each meal and snack. Proper brushing technique was reviewed when your braces were applied. There was a series of pictures about proper brushing that we placed in your goodie bag, along with a new toothbrush and floss threaders. You can use floss threaders over and over again to help clean your teeth. If you lose them, just ask our office for more or buy them at a local drugstore. You dont have to use them, since you can easily thread regular dental floss above or below the wires to floss properly.
Your teeth may be slightly tender after we first put your braces on and, to a lesser degree, after each adjustment. That being said, we think youll be pleasantly surprised at how comfortable youll be.
Dr. Fred Salvatoriello has been a Specialist in Orthodontics and Dento-Facial Orthopedics since 1975. He graduated as a Dean's List student from Rutgers University and attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where he was elected to the National Dental Honor Society. Dr. Sal received his specialty certification from Tufts University Graduate School of Orthodontics.
Dr. Sal is a pioneer in his field and has developed two appliances (BROPA and the MANDIBULAR ADVANCER) and approaches to interceptive orthodontic and dento-facial treatment in youngsters so treatment can often be provided without the use of fixed orthodontic appliances, i.e. braces.
Dr. Sal and his wife, Mary Ann, live in Hanover. They have 11 children and five grandchildren. While he enjoys racquetball and swimming, sharing time with his children and watching his grandchildren grow up are his favorite activities.

Was not impressed with the service or the fact that Dr. Sal didn't explain anything just said my son never should have had any teeth pulled even though his mouth is very crowded. He said he needed to get fit for a retainer for the bottom. Took my son to another room to have that done and had me go wait in the waiting room then after told us to come back in six weeks. Got the impression he was in a hurry to get us out. Won't be going back

Search his name on google before you make an appointment (and make sure you look through a couple pages of results)--this man is shady. Staff and doctor are not helpful with billing and insurance payments. Rather they are condescending, easily irritated and very short. If you have a problem with Dr. Sal regarding a service he performed, he will become very defensive and attack you in return. That being said, if you are willing to deal with all of this, his service performed is adequate.

I love how punctual they are. There is never more than a 10 minute wait. The staff is very friendly and professional and they explain everything in detail and very thoroughly. They are great.
