Many dentists offer orthodontic treatment, but only an orthodontist has had the extensive specialized training. To be certified as an orthodontist, a minimum of two years of full time, academic training at an American Dental Association accredited hospital or university is required. Typically, only dentists who have graduated in the top ten percent of their class are privileged with the opportunity for specialty training. During this training, the orthodontist is taught optimal movement of teeth practices and theory. After this highly specialized training and being granted a license through the state can an individual call themselves an orthodontist. A further mark of distinction is obtaining board certification. Only orthodontists that have undergone rigorous examination by the Board of the American Association of Orthodontists, the highest regulatory body in orthodontics, and successfully passed may designate that they are a Board Certified Orthodontist. Only 33% of ALL orthodontists have attained this prestigious recognition. Dr. Forbes has been certified by the state of Illinois as an orthodontist and is a Board Certified Orthodontist, through the American Association of Orthodontists.

I have always been distinguished as an excellent artist and loved science as well. When I came home after a trip to my orthodontist, Dr. Gilbert, I declared to my mother that I had made up my mind. I want to be an orthodontist! My mother, thinking that I would change my decision many times during the next 6 years said thats nice. As it turned out, I never veered. I am delighted that I didnt. My backup profession was to be a medical illustrator. Recently, I realized that dream also. Throughout this website you will see some of my medical illustrations. As a Co-Director of Northwestern University Cleft Palate Institute, I have gained a deep understanding of treating children with congenital disabilities and work closely with Dr. Pravin Patel at the University of Illinois and the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago.
I have alsoreviewed grants from the National Institutes of Health (N.I.H.) and the American Association of Orthodontists. With Dr. Perry, I co-authored the textbook: Understanding Orthodontics (Quintessence). I have published numerous articles in such journals as the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, the Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice, The American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal, The Journal of Developmental Biology and Craniofacial Genetics, the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, and the Compendium for Continuing Education in Dentistry (see the PDF articles on this website). I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists and served as President of the Illinois Society of Orthodontists (2003-2004).

I have been fortunate to be elected to a diverse array of associations including: The American Association of Orthodontists, The American College of Dentists, The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, The American Society for Cell Biology, American Association of Bone and Mineral Research, The American Association of Developmental Biology and The American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. Recently, I was inducted into The Association of Medical Illustrators as a Professional Member.
Since leaving an academic career at Northwestern University in 1993, I have dedicated myself full-time to Orthodontics in private practice (West Dundee IL). I am devotedly married to Nancy and we have two sons (Colin and Tristan).

Dr Forbes has been treating both my children for several several years through Phase 1 and Phase 2. He is always energetic and interacts with patients well. His staff is also very friendly and informative about treatments performed.. The wait times are minimal and the practice tends to run on time. Definitely recommend if your looking for orthodontic treatment.

Dr Forbes is positively on of the best Orthodontist we've experienced. He's been treating my daughter for the last 5 yrs and we couldn't be happier with the results. He's super knowledgeable, extremely patient with the kids and such a wonderful person. Would highly recommend him for your kids.

I've gotten my braces here 2 times and both where great. Dr Forbes is amazing at what he does. And brings humor into it all. If I need braces a third time I'll come back.

This place is amazing. The staff is so friendly and professional. Dr Forbes takes special time to explain patients no matter what their age is everything. He make special young kids feel like adult. I originally started going to Dr. Forbes as a child when I needed braces/retainer and I cannot say enough good things about this office. The entire staff is kind, informative and attentive -- they really listen to you and have your best interests at mind. The office itself is always kept clean and tidy and they even have an air filtration system in the waiting room as well. Dr. Forbes is so kind hearted and really cares for his patients -- when I was younger and went for braces as a child I remember after one appointment I was having alot of uncomfortableness and he came in on a Sunday (when they are not open) to address my problem right then and there and I left pain free. It meant the world to me and has always been how I've remembered him, his kindness is unmatched. He made my teeth beautiful and straight. When I needed to see an orthodontist again as an adult recently his office was first on my mind and my experience was just as wonderful. If my own children ever need braces/retainers/etc Dr. Forbes will absolutely be my first choice if he is in practice still. If you are on the fence about choosing an orthodontist, choose Dr. Forbes. I am terrified of teeth work but Dr. Forbes makes it a calm experience. He is wonderful with children, teens and adults. I cannot say enough good things about this office.

We love the place and the staff. Dr Forbes is very understanding towards the needs of my daughter, careful and thoughtful. He doesn't rush through any procedure and gives my daughter as many breakes as she needs. Whenever she doesn't understand what's being done on her teeth, he patiently explains until she understands. She says she likes this place as well and Dr Forbes who's very kind to kids :)

"Forbes Orthodontics" is a great place to go to help make straight! My son currently comes here regularly every four weeks. His teeth has come a long way, from all jagged and misplaced to almost perfection. The customer service is also great. Everyone there us super nice and welcoming to everyone. I wouls greatly recommend this place!

I am so glad we found Dr. Forbes. Everyone in the office is cheerful and kind to our son Noam and the whole family. I especially appreciate how Dr. Forbes is always willing to stop or slow down when Noam asks, and Dr. Forbes has been totally game to explain the science of orthodontics to our nerdy family every time we ask.
