Warning to all considering John Sweeney and Focus Dentistry. I realize that some folks have had positive experiences, but I have seen a side of John that he keeps well-hidden. Not only did John cause permanent nerve damage to my face, he failed to fully explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives when I started treatment, did not disclose that his approach was not evidence based nor endorsed by the American Dental Association, and misrepresented himself as an expert when he was actually still in training. He scared me into thinking I'd lose all my teeth if I didn't commit to this "treatment." He was dismissive and condescending multiple times over the course of my multi-year experience with him. During my last visit, when I came in in tears because of the nerve pain and facial drooping I experienced as a result of his negligence, he got so angry that he abandoned me in the chair at his office while he got in his car and left (I have this on video). He offered a refund, but has yet to follow through with it. If you are considering dental care with Dr. Sweeney, I urge you to research his approach and where he received his training. This could cause serious damage. There are other airway focused, neuromuscular dentists in Wilmington who will not gaslight or dismiss you and are committed to partnering with their patients to achieve healing instead of letting their egos dictate their abhorrent behavior. Avoid this practice at all costs.

We could not be more grateful for Dr. Sweeney and his staff. My daughter had been living with an undiagnosed dysfunctional bite for years resulting in unstable teeth, chronic headaches, neck pain, poor sleep, and sinus issues. Dr. Sweeney's comprehensive approach resolved all of the above issues AND gave her a beautiful, healthy smile! Thank you, Focus Dentistry, for taking the time to find the root of the issue and for providing such individualized care.

First, I am a dentist so I am an educated and informed patient. I also live in Asheville-so I drove almost 6 hours to work with Dr. Sweeney. In my 20 years of practice, I have never met a dentist who is so dedicated and skilled. My treatment took 18 months and multiple trips to the coast, it was worth every minute and I would do it again if it took twice as long or the drive was twice as far! Dr. Sweeney is passionate about making his patients look and feel amazing, I am without headaches for the first time in years. My teeth are beautiful and functional, I could not be happier or say enough great things about Dr. Sweeney. His staff, Courtney and Shelly are consummately professional and their kind and caring manner makes you feel very comfortable in the office. They are a great team! If you are looking for a dentist who really understands that teeth are only part of the orofacial complex and who wants your whole mouth- joints, muscles, lips, gums to feel great while also having your teeth look beautiful-this is the dental practice for you!!

I cannot recommend Dr. Sweeney and his entire staff more! I have been living with TMD pain and discomfort for 13+ years. At some point, I felt like that was just going to be my life. But with Dr. Sweeney and his attention to detail, I am well on my way to a pain-free life! He is so caring and goes above and beyond for his patients! His staff is so helpful and friendly! They are the most accommodating people and seriously will bend over backwards to help you! Would recommend him over and over and over again if I could!

I cannot put in writing how appreciative I am Of the Focus Team. I have had TMJ issues beyond with my jaw for years. I've been to two doctors prior to Dr. Sweeney. Dr.Sweeny took the time and effort to sit down and really understand what my issues were and what the best course of action was. Instead of slapping me in a full set of veneers which obviously is not the greatest option for me and was what the Other two doctors wanted me to do; He took the time and effort for months on end to get me where I needed to be to do final reconstructive. It has affected my every day. I used to have chronic neck pain and back pain that has gotten so much better. I haven't had lockjaw since Dr Sweeny 'fixed' me ;0). And my TMJ has gotten so much better. Plus my smile is beautiful. I can't say enough about how great this team is. They are sincere in their efforts to really help you, you're not just a number to them. I would 100% recommend them to anybody who is having issues as I did. I am forever grateful.

This doc gets results! I came to Dr. John with life altering migraines on a daily basis for the past 5 years. After receiving 5 months of treatment, I now only have occasional migraines. Dr. John and his staff are wonderful!

I have had a phenomenal experience with Dr. Sweeney. All the things he told me would happen,happened! The pain in my neck reduced by 80%. My nearly numb thumb, came back to life 90%. The theory being if you can relax the TMJ joints, it can take the pressure off the compressed nerve in my neck! I am thrilled with the results and my smile is beautiful. My whole face thinned out and I can smile without squinting. My teeth all touch now and I'm chewing my food better. Truly one of my best healing experiences. I am a retired massage therapist who practiced body/mind psychology. Our text books taught us about the importance of working on the massiter muscle ( jaw muscles) I would often get deep emotional releases when those muscles relaxed. I feel more uplift and an awareness of when I am clenching unconsciously. I also did ART ( active release technique) along with this treatment and it helped my neck release and adjust with the dental treatments. I believe the two therapies in conjunction was an excellent idea. Proved to work. I am deeply grateful for this life changing work! Dr. Sweeney and all his staff are so nice, personable and genuinely care. I wanted to adopt them all.

I was grinding my teeth and clenching down so much that my teeth were chipping. My face was beginning to droop on one side because my jaw was so out of line. I finished my treatment with Dr. Sweeney in March 2019 and my life has changed so much! I sleep through the night and wake up pain free. I have lost weight and my face looks even and healthy. My teeth all touch when I bite down and I feel so confident with my new smile. I am no longer living in pain and couldn't be more grateful to Dr. Sweeney. The treatment is personalized just for you and your specific problem. I was treated like family and always felt like a priority to them. This sounds like hyperbole, but Dr. John Sweeney practices life-changing dentistry. Your health, appearance, confidence, and more will all improve if you follow the plan! John and his staff are great people too - you'll enjoy being around them!
