Wisdom teeth are molars found in the very back of your mouth. These teeth usually appear in the late teens or early twenties, but may become impacted (fail to erupt) due to lack of room in the jaw or angle of entry. The most common type of impacted wisdom tooth is mesial, which means the tooth is angled forward, toward the front of your mouth.
When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it may need to be removed. If it is not, you may develop gum tenderness, swelling, or even severe pain. Impacted wisdom teeth that are partially or fully erupted tend to be quite difficult to clean and are susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, and even gum disease.
Each patients situation is unique. Dr. Kaufman will usually take a panoramic X-ray to determine whether your wisdom teeth will need to be removed. If the doctor recommends removal of your wisdom teeth, its best to have them removed sooner rather than later.
Wisdom teeth are typically removed in the late teens or early twenties because there is a greater chance the roots have not fully formed and the bone surrounding the teeth is less dense. These two factors can make extraction easier, as well as make the recovery time much shorter.
To remove a wisdom tooth, the doctor first needs to numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. We can use additional medication to sedate you safely during the extraction if you are feeling nervous about the procedure.
Since the impacted tooth may still be under the gums and embedded in your jaw bone, Dr. Kaufman will need to remove a portion of the covering bone to extract the tooth. To minimize the amount of bone that is removed with the tooth, the surgeon will often section your wisdom tooth so each piece can be removed through a small opening in the bone.
Once your wisdom teeth have been extracted, the healing process begins. Healing time varies, depending on the degree of difficulty related to the extraction. Our office will let you know what to expect and will provide instructions for a comfortable, efficient healing process.

Paige and Tatiana are absolute gems! This office is very beautiful on the inside and well-maintained. The oral surgeon has availability to do same-day treatment. If you're looking for extractions, implants or biopsies, then look no further.

I was referred by my orthodontist, ended up in the hospital for 2 days due to pressure on my chest from inhaling so much laughing gas causing breathing problems and muscle issues. I was in surgery and tried to tell the Doctor my mouth was hurting and I was having chest pains from his assistant leaning on me and they ignored that. Not only that the assistant tried to provide me a medicine I was allergic to after telling him and I had to correct him before he submitted it. Got blood work done by the ER and my levels were too high/ too low. I had to be watched for 2 days before being able to go home and my medication prescribed so I can heal to go back to work...

I have nothing but great things to say about Fitchburg Dentistry & Braces. Dr. Gupta and the entire staff are friendly, knowledgeable, punctual and really make you feel comfortable during your appointments. Dr Giglou did a fantastic job with my 4 Wisdom teeth extractions. We did all 4 in one day and at 25 years old the consequences of not doing it earlier scared me. After Dr. Giglous work I experienced only minor swelling and pain and felt back to normal after a couple days. Definitely recommend his work!

I have been to Fitchburg Dentistry and Braces twice, once for a cleaning, and once for fillings. Both the hygienists and dentist have been kind, professional and compassionate. I hadnt been to the dentist in nearly 5 years and I was nervous, but I had no reason to be. I was talked through every step of the cleaning and felt much better after. The office is clean and welcoming and all the staff is friendly. This will be my dentist for a very long time.
