U.S. News ranked Childrens Hospital No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia, West Virginia and Virginia, and No. 1 in Pennsylvania. Families within a days drive of Philadelphia can be confident they dont need to fly across the country to give their children the best and safest care, and follow-up visits are more convenient, too.

CHOP is ranked No. 2 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report's 2021-22 Honor Roll of Best Children's Hospitals, an elite recognition we've enjoyed every year since the list was created in 2009. Families from all 50 states have relied on our expertise and experience when their children face challenging circumstances.

U.S. News also evaluated programs in 10 specialty areas. CHOP was listed among the top eight programs in each of the 10 ranked specialties for 2021-22, and five of our specialties are ranked No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3.

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine, located at CHOP, is also consistently ranked as the No. 1 Department of Pediatrics in the country by U.S. News.

Several of our highly ranked programs are home to trailblazing initiatives conducting visionary research that translates into clinical care breakthroughs and transforms lives. Those extraordinary efforts are spotlighted below.

When creating its rankings, U.S. News relies on clinical data, supplied by the nearly 200 pediatric hospitals it surveys, and on an annual survey of nearly 11,000 pediatric specialists across the country. The ranking methodology considers patient outcomes, such as mortality, complications and infection rates; efficiency and coordination of care delivery, and compliance with 'best practices.' Surgical success rates, adequacy of nurse staffing, procedure and patient volume, availability of programs for particular illnesses and conditions, and much more were components of the survey.

It is the recognition of CHOPs excellence and expertise across the broad spectrum of services even when we care for the most complex and sickest children that led to our place on the Honor Roll. The quality of our care and treatments, superior nurse-patient ratios, commitment to safety, emphasis on family-centered care, and groundbreaking research means your child is in good hands at Childrens Hospital.

Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has attained Magnet recognition multiple times as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Centers (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program. This voluntary credentialing program for hospitals recognizes excellence in nursing. This credential is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practice. CHOP was initially designated a Magnet hospital in 2004 and was the first pediatric hospital in Pennsylvania to receive Magnet status. In 2008, 2014 and 2019, CHOP was re-designated as a Magnet institution.

CHOP is one of a select group of 482 healthcare organizations out of nearly 6,000 in the United States and the world to achieve Magnet designation. Hospitals must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on adherence to Magnet components and demonstrated improvements in patient care and quality.

To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. The process begins with the submission of an electronic application, followed by written documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes. If scores from the written documentation fall within a range of excellence, an on-site visit will occur to thoroughly assess the applicant. After this rigorous on-site review process, the Commission on Magnet Recognition will review the completed appraisal report and vote to determine whether Magnet recognition will be granted.

An organization seeking to reapply for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence of how Magnet concepts, performance, and quality were sustained and improved over the four-year period since the hospital received its most recent recognition.
