Fenton Family Dental – Silver Spring - General dentist in Silver Spring, MD

Dr. Toussaint Crawford founded Fenton Family Dental in 2009. Its been a labor of love, at times harder than others. He initially got into dentistry in 2000 and was fortunate to be able to work with his uncle, who was a dentist. This experience working together really brought Dr. Crawford into the dentistry game. Starting out, he had no real idea that he was going to be a dentist, but the exposure encouraged him to pursue it full-time as a career. Dr. Crawford ended up staying in his uncles practice all the way through 2008, and by that time he had become a dentist himself. During this period, he had evolved from front desk associate to being an assistant, a steri-tech, and making the retainers in the back for patients. This experience gave him the knowledge to help propel his career forward.

For dental school, Dr. Crawford attended Howard University and graduated in 2007. Before that, he went to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, getting a degree in business. Dr. Crawford likes to combine those two specialties with Fenton Family Dental.

Our core values are: love, learn, thrive, teach. When you come into the office, youll see some of the team wearing t-shirts with these values. Those core values mean a lot to the team, and everyone tries to live up to them as much as they can every day. Anyone who has really tried to live up to high ideals knows that you will fail sometimes, but its the journey that gets you there. For the team that works here, we try to provide them with real blueprints on how to exemplify love, learn, thrive, teach as much as possible. We have listed out 25 ways on a poster that is framed on the wall in our office. We believe we are getting better at these goals every day.

In terms of dentistry here at Fenton Family Dental, our practice specializes in smile design, implants, Invisalign, traditional dental work, and all of it is based in digital dentistry. Our practice is going to show you exactly whats happening, take digital photos, and show you on scans. Our goal is for you to be part of this discovery journey that helps us not only explain dentistry but choose a solution that will work for your health goals. Again, digital dentistry is the basis for everything we do.

Dr. Crawford has a wife and three kids. They live in Virginia to be closer to their two step-kids. Would not go to. I had a root canal done here back in February and not only was it THOUSANDS of dollars more expensive than every other clinic I reached out to after the fact, but the actual experience with the doctor was horrible. I've detailed out the problems with my experience below. Now, when I reached out to them initially I was given a refund for the procedure and told they would finish it at no cost to me. Now, EIGHT MONTHS later I have just received a text message about a bill for my root canal, stating that I owe them nearly $600. - Two of the dental assistants came into my little cube and were discussing how a few of their coworkers had just gotten COVID - The dentist burned the inside of my mouth twice, once on the outside of my lip and once on the inside of my cheek - The dentist left a gouge on the inside of my mouth from his carelessness - Not numbed properly either day leading to need to be re-numbed and have the procedure paused so that I could take a breather after some intense pain - Grossly overcharging. They quoted 1k with my insurance and 5k without. The other offices were charging 1k without insurance for the same procedure - Absolutely did not receive the level of care I would associate with a procedure that costs 5x more - Felt pressured to make an appointment after my first visit - Dentist was dismissive. I mentioned 3 separate times about my dental anxiety but was ignored each time. - I left with cement or some other sealant all over the underside and front of my chin on the second day. - The dentist, without asking me shaved/filed two of my other molars in completely different sections of my mouth because he thought they were too pointy. All of my molars are a bit pointy, except these two which are now also textured differently than my other teeth. Both were done without giving me a chance to say no. He just announced he was doing it with the instrument already in my mouth and on one of my teeth. To this day, those teeth still have a different texture than the rest of my molars.

The company has been dreadful from beginning to end. I stopped using them because on my last visit I found myself being condescended to by a technician when I asked for clarity on how to follow up after a procedure. The work I had done a on crown is now the topic of conversation at my new dentist, and on top of that I was charged for additional procedure that I never received. After being treated so horribly, I had to then work up the courage to ask for my refund on the work I never received. I was told it would take 2 weeks to receive a check from their bank. It's been over a month and a half now and still nothing. When I call them they either don't pick up or I'm told someone will call me back in a couple hours to resolve the issue. It's been weeks off me calling me, and being told someone will get back to me but still nothing. If they weren't so horrible I would've let it go but at this point I feel discarded and just want to be done with the situation.

I do not recommend this place. Here are my reasons: 1. An assistant had very long hair, and every time she turned around, her hair touched my face which was extremely unpleasant. 2. The other assistant turned tv on while i was getting treated. I could tell she seemed unprofessional even before she did that (it clearly was not for me because my eyesights were blocked), but she kept losing her concentration because she was distracted by the tv. She did not know what to hand to the doctor when asked many of times. 3. I had root canal. Of course, the chair was reclined during the procedure. Funny thing was my legs were put higher than the upper body for more than 3 hours. My legs were super numb at the end. 4. I had crown. There is a gap between the tip of the crown and my gum meaning I get food stuck in between the crown and gum. Can you believe this? 5. I just received a statement, and my last visit was 10 months ago. What a surprise.

My appointment was @ 7:40 am. I arrived at his office at 7:20. The attendant took me back at 7:40 put me in a dental room, Dr Crawford didn't show up in that room until 8:20 am. that was a 40 minute wait. Very frustrating. My time is important to me also . This does not happen all the time but once in awhile. So sorry for this statement otherwise happy with his service. Al Coates Jr.
