Dr. Burkholders goal was to eradicate dental decay within his areas of responsibility through comprehensive care and a strong preventive program. Dr. Burkholder returned to Washington State and practiced for 18 years in downtown Seattle, and then transitioned to Klahanie Family Dentistry in Issaquah, Washington. In 1989, Dr. Burkholder developed the Adopt-a-Patient Program for abused and neglected children, working primarily with the children from Childhaven. Anita manages the practice. As a retired medical doctor with years of experience in patient relations, business and healthcare as a whole, transferring her skills to dentistry has been smooth. Anita was a pioneer for female surgeons and was the seventh female urologist certified in Washington State. She also opened the first female urology practice in the Pacific Northwest. Amidst her career, Anita has remained a devoted wife, mother, and daughter. Although she has retired from surgery, it made sense to utilize her knowledge and years of experience in a less stressful yet parallel environment. A family dentist serves patients of most ages, addressing their different oral health needs as they grow older. Patients can keep seeing the same family dentist or the same group of family dentists for decades. Family dentist practices function as primary care dentists and treat family members such as parents, children, and grandparents.

Family dentists work with both children and adults to care for these patients as they grow and change. These dentists emphasize patient involvement by providing accessible, continuous, patient-centered, and comprehensive care. The hallmarks of many family dentistry practices include services that benefit patients at all stages of life, such as:

Family dentists make a point of getting to know their patients. They encourage regular checkups and catch emerging issues such as cavities. They provide continuity of care even if patients do not see the same professional on each visit. Information such as medical histories, diagnoses, and treatment plans are less likely to fall through any cracks. Centralized paperwork and familiarity with medical history also help dentists pinpoint and treat various oral health issues.

A family dentist can practice alone, but some partner with other dentists. Whatever the case, a family dentist treats various needs. Patients often turn to their family dental practice for checkups, cleanings, cavity prevention and treatment, tooth decay deterrence, and gum disease prevention. Some practices may even provide orthodontic services, cosmetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, and other types of specialized dentistry. When necessary, family dentists refer patients to specialized dentists for other types of treatment.

A patient's first visit to a family dentist will consist of a thorough physical examination to assess their needs and current dental health. This will involve a dental exam and updated X-rays. X-rays are particularly essential as they can diagnose and evaluate any potential issues that an exam cannot detect. Fashion Isle Smiles will also perform a thorough dental cleaning as part of the first visit. Then, once completed, our team will discuss any X-ray results and devise a customized treatment plan to meet each patient's unique needs.

A. Family dentists treat most ages, caring for both children and senior citizens. If the practice includes a pediatric dentist, it might accept infant patients. Otherwise, a family dentist tends to see children once they are in kindergarten.

A. Most likely, yes. However, if the cavity is severe enough, family dentists may need to refer patients elsewhere for more specialized care. Regular checkups with your family dentist can help prevent cavities.

A. In general, each patient should visit once or twice a year. Dentists prefer to see children every six months. Meanwhile, adults with teeth in excellent condition might visit only once a year. People who are pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, or dealing with serious health issues may need to visit their dentist more frequently than twice a year. We can help determine your unique risk profile.

By visiting us as soon as possible, our team can help get you the professional treatment you need. Instead of waiting around and allowing the symptoms to get worse, we can provide you with treatment options.

Wondering when it is necessary to visit a family dentist and when it is necessary to visit a general dentist? These are two common types of dental professionals. While they are similar, they do have their differences.Considering choosing a family dentist in Newport Beach? Whenever it is necessary to choose a new dentist, it is

Many individuals are familiar with gum disease. What may be unknown, however, is the relationship of diabetes to problems with the gums. Diabetes is the result of multiple diseases within the body that accumulate from too much sugar in the bloodstream. Sugar often becomes the culprit that is responsible for an individual's gum disease. Continue

A cosmetic dentist can use inlays and onlays in situations where a crown might be undesirable or unnecessary. Inlays strengthen the tooth's existing structure, and onlays cover the cusp of the tooth. Both are bonded on to restore tooth integrity and functionality in a natural-looking way. Inlays and onlays achieve many of the same results

Crooked, misaligned teeth can make you self-conscious about your smile. If you are eager to achieve straighter teeth but reluctant to try traditional braces, you have options. Clear aligners are a discreet way to shift teeth into the correct position.

Braces can correct a range of orthodontic problems, but they are not always comfortable. The sharp metal can irritate the mouth and gums. Clear aligners are different. These appliances are made of smooth, durable plastic.

Aligners gently guide and straighten teeth to provide a brighter smile. Unlike braces, aligners are discreet and fully removable. Patients can take their aligners out for special events like weddings, graduation, or proms.

Unlike metal braces, clear aligners will not irritate sensitive mouth tissues. Patients who opt for aligners can also skip tedious dietary restrictions. Those who choose braces may have to avoid hard candy and sticky treats. With aligners, however, one can simply remove the trays to enjoy their favorite foods.

Keep in mind that aligners are not suitable for everyone. For example, aligners are not an appropriate option for young children whose mouths are still developing. Dental providers generally recommend clear aligners for patients who have already achieved their adult jaw size and shape.

Clear aligners cannot fix every dental concern. Some complex issues may require traditional braces or headgear. We can provide in-depth guidance. If clear aligners are not an option, we can help select an alternate treatment.

Patients must wear clear aligners for 20-22 hours per day. Patients who reach this target enjoy a faster treatment and more consistent results. Most providers recommend removing the aligners only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Patients can expect to wear their aligners overnight, too.

Complying with treatment can be a roadblock for some patients, especially teens. Patients who tend to snack or sip coffee throughout the day may have trouble keeping their aligners in place. However, removing the aligners for several hours each day can reduce the effectiveness of your treatment.

Before investing in clear aligners, patients must be realistic about their limitations. This involves considering their lifestyle and personal habits. If they suspect that they may have trouble sticking to the treatment plan, braces might be a better choice.

Once a patient opts for clear aligners, our team begins by taking impressions of the mouth. We send the impressions to a dental lab that produces the aligners. The first set of aligners will be ready within a few weeks.

Most patients can expect to switch out their aligners every one to two weeks. Each new set shifts the teeth a bit more. We provide a schedule that explains when it is time to switch to a new set of aligners. Patients can change out their aligners in the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

During treatment, patients may need to visit the office every six weeks. During these visits, we provide the next few sets of aligners. Our team also takes a look into the mouth to assess the treatment's progress. These checkups are generally brief.

Treatment times can vary, and complex dental issues may take longer to treat. The average treatment time is less than two years. Teen patients may show results more quickly, as their teeth are still developing.

After patients complete their treatment plan, they should expect to continue wearing their aligners overnight. Our team might also suggest a permanent retainer. These devices are fixed in place to prevent the teeth from shifting.

This stage of treatment focuses on preserving the results. It is essential to follow up with the dentist's recommendations. If patients stop wearing the aligners too soon, the teeth may move back into their original position.

A. Dental providers recommend removing your aligners during physical activity. If you are hit in the face while wearing your aligners, you might suffer a mouth injury. Our team can provide more advice about preventing sports-related dental injuries.

A. It is safe to sip room-temperature water while wearing clear aligners. Avoid hot or cold beverages when your aligners are in place. Extreme temperatures can warp or damage the material. Always make sure to take your aligners out before eating.

A. Most orthodontic treatments involve a certain amount of discomfort. As your teeth shift into their new position, your mouth may feel sore. These side effects generally appear after inserting a new set of aligners. Any soreness or discomfort usually disappears after 24 hours.

A. Aligners are designed to be discreet. Unless you are looking closely, it is difficult to tell whether someone is wearing clear aligners. For added discretion, aligners can be removed during photos and special events.

A. Costs may vary depending on insurance plans and treatment duration. Your insurance provider can offer specific information about costs and coverage. Our office team can also help you compare treatment options to find one that meets your needs.

Clear aligners are an option for most teens and adults seeking orthodontic treatment. With clear aligners, patients can reduce the amount of time they spend in the dentist's chair. Treatment generally takes place in the privacy and convenience of the patient's home.

This is the BEST Dentist Office in Orange County and its not even close. When I first entered Fashion Isle Smiles I was greeted by the nicest ladies who were named Anita and Cecilia. From someone who is not very fond of the dentist these ladies made my entrance extremely comfortable and very welcoming. Once I was called to be seen I was extremely nervous again because you know...I am not very fond of the dentist. I was then greeted by the Dental Hygienist Kaila and she was so sweet and comforting and made me feel at home. Not only that, but she had the most gentle touch when it comes to cleaning teeth. My experience with Hygienists have not been great. I feel like they are always way to rough. Not Kaila! She was by far the greatest Hygienist I have ever had. After the cleaning I was then greeted by Dr. Michael Cooley and of course my first thought was "What is this guy going to try to sell me?" But yet again that was not the case. Dr. Cooley was very friendly and super laid back. He loved to just have casual conversation and actually get to know me. Not only that but he was super honest with me and did not force anything onto me. The integrity of this place is second to none. Overall, Im not fond of the dentist but when I come to Fashion Isle Smiles I feel like I'm part of a family. Not a dentist office that is trying to go after my checkbook but a dentist office that cares about my health and well being. Take it from me, this is the BEST Dentist Office in Orange County!

My father had an emergency procedure he needed done and no one else would work on him over Thanksgiving weekend. His tooth was infected and had to come out. He was in terrible pain. They rearranged their schedule to make sure he could be seen within 24 hours. He helped my 83 year old father tremendously. I will always use Rich Burkholder as my dentist as he goes above and beyond the call of duty! Thanks Rich and Anita!

Of the multiple dentists I have had, Dr. Cooley is by far the most thorough and does an outstanding job of educating patients on how dental health affects other parts and functions of the body than one would expect. Great experience all around which I highly recommend.

Dr. Cooley and his team did an excellent job. I had a bad experience with a different dentist office. I called around and was able to speak with Dr. Cooley on a Saturday. This was very convenient because I work during the week. He was able to schedule an appointment for the following Saturday. The front office team were very friendly and supportive. They were able to complete my pre-office screening over the phone. I arrived to the office for my appointment where I was cordially welcomed. The lady Kayla was very personable and patient during the teeth cleaning. She also provided helpful guidance on how to maintain a healthy oral environment. She was awesome. I will be coming back to Fashion Isle Smiles in the future, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great dentist. A big thank you to Dr. Cooley and his staff for providing a great dental experience.
