Benjamin F. Gilbert III, DDS Dr. Ben Gilbert was born and raised in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. After high school, he attended Howard University in Washington, DC, where he received his bachelors degree in plant biology. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Ben participated in student government, the pre-professionals club, and intramural basketball and football, where he won three football championships. Dr. Ben was also selected to be a student ambassador for Howard University.
After earning his bachelors degree, Dr. Ben attended Howard University College of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery. While in dental school, Dr. Ben was elected Freshman Class President and was selected to represent the dental school on a university-wide level as the Graduate Student Representative. He also held the position of Treasurer in the Graduate Student Assembly and was a member of the Student American Dental Association and the Student National Dental Association.
Upon graduation, Dr. Ben joined a dental practice in New York City, which focused primarily on implant and cosmetic dentistry. This is where his love of these specialties was born. Dr. Ben later went on to complete a 300-hour maxi course in implantology with one of the founding fathers of modern-day implantology, the late Dr. Norman Cranin, through Brookdale Hospital and New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Ben is a member of the American Dental Association, the National Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. LaChanda Q. Akers vision is to be a community leader and teacher. As a young new dentist and first-generation doctor in her family, she is empowered to give every day her all. With this vision, she inspires those around her to do the same and tap into their leadership potential. She also loves to laugh!
Dr. Akers completed her undergraduate education at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where she was involved in several organizations associated with education, community outreach and uplift, and mentorship of girls and women. She continued her education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she lived for five years and gained her masters degree in health science and her doctorate in dentistry. During this time, she also helped initiate several oral health outreach programs for the surrounding community. In 2017, she relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where she completed her residency in hospital general dentistry providing oral healthcare through the Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington and Newark Campus) and made herself at home in the Delaware dental community.
She lives in the area with her puppy Chuck-E (a Boston Terrier), and her family is close by in her hometown of Cape May, New Jersey. She still enjoys her summers at the shore. When she is not practicing dentistry, she enjoys traveling with friends, music, dance, painting, cooking, eating, brunching and spending time with family.
Being new to the area, Dr. Akers is adamant about getting involved in knowing the Delaware community, involvement in outreach, supporting the education system and mentorship. She has a passion for educating children and young adults.

I had been with my recently retired dentist for 22 years and loved him. I changed to this dentist office because, as a granddaughter of a black dentist, I wanted to support a black dentist. During the pandemic there were all these allegations about black people not receiving the best care from white doctors. So that was another reason I made the change. However, the first time I sat in his chair, he told me that I had 6 cavities and my teeth were in need of fillings. I trusted Dr. Ben and allowed him to fill the first three fillings. I went to a cleaning with him in between getting my other three filled, and he added that I had four additional cavities along with the other three. I couldn't believe it. I was highly upset because I take very good care of my teeth. In fact I go for cleanings every three months instead of every six months. I had only ever had one cavity that was filled in 48 years prior to going to this practice. I knew then that he was out for money beyond my dental insurance coverage. The hygienist could see that I was upset, but I let her clean my teeth. I told her I was going to get a second opinion. She agreed with me doing this if I wasn't satisfied. I went to another dental practice, and they said I had no cavities and no need to fill or even out any divots. They told me that I had fillings that I didn't need. I have been to that dentist two more times and have had extensive X-rays, only to find that I had no cavities. I cry every time I think about how I trusted Dr. Ben to my teeth (my pride and joy). He got me good. Patient beware. You may be paying for something that you don't need.

This is the worst dental office in America! They are highly unprofessional. I schedule an appointment for my child's next cleaning a year in advance. I received a very rude phone call today saying that my appointment is canceled and they can not make any accommodation until January,2023 for my child even though my original appointment was made 1 year in advance. Do not waste your time, money, go to a professional dentistry that will give you a reason why your appointments are canceled and not such short notice. Update: the receptionist in the front office has a short attitude problem. Very unprofessional. you can tell she doesn't want to work. How she communicates with the patients and over the phone makes you never want to come back. Then the owner replied and said oh you felt it was unprofessional?please replay the our phone call..she was very rude on a recorded line to your patients. I'm referring to the lady with black hair and glasses with moles on her face. Then, when I hung up on phone beacuse I didn't like her tone of voice and stated that this was highly unprofessional. She called me back and said you hung up on me?! In a yelling/demanding tone of voice. Really?!?! That's professional? As a human I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DISCONNECT A PHONE CALL BEACUSE THE PERSON ON THE OTHER LINE IS SPEAKING TO ME LIKE I AM A CHILD. BEACUSE I thought it was highly unprofessional to canceled a 1 year scheduled out appointment with short notice It's crazy beacuse it's not the actual dentist who is working on my child's teeth that's the problem! It's the receptionist that is the BIG ISSUE!

I couldn't wait to review this place, these people are the definition of family, everyone is friendly ,and helpful. Staffs are incredibly knowledgeable, the environment is clean and organized, they also provide affordable payment plan for dental work in case your insurance doesn't cover it. My new go to dental location.

BEST DENTIST AND EMPLOYEES I HAVE EXPERIENCED SINCE MOVING TO DELAWARE 25YRS AGO!! (Look below for follow up to this review, and why I removed stars) *This reviewer is for the Bear, DE location* I thought my last dentist was good based on the fact that they were more expensive (and luxurious even on the inside). But the moment I went to this Family Dentistry Center( in Bear, DE location), I'm gonna be real, I thought I was going to experience a "different" level of care based on the fact that I now have Medicaid. But if I would have known about them years ago even before Medicaid I would have come here first. From the ladies (and young gentlemen my the name of Kevin) that works at from desks (Yamni) to the Dental tech (Marshal), and Dr. Gilbert. great Job. FOLLOW UP: maybe it was just because I was new, that I was treated so well, unfortunately I must remove 2 stars for my most recent visit that showed me the true reality of things.

I am new to the area and have been to their office a couple of times. The first time around, there was some confusion because they had sent me a text message asking for confirmation and my response wasn't recorded. But Kevin and Yamini worked with me to make sure I was seen the same day, albeit after a half hour wait. I went back today for crown placement consultation and gingivitis treatment. They were very professional and Kevin patiently went over the financials so I knew how much the treatment was going to cost versus how much I will expect to pay after insurance coverage kicked in. Dr. Ben was fabulous and Helen (dental hygienist) was also very efficient. I highly recommend this practice for anyone. Just like many others have mentioned I found this to be a diverse and caring team overall.

Dr. Ben and his team at the Family Dental Center have provided my entire family with exceptional care over the last four years. Dr. Ben and his team have a diverse environment and a hard working, flexible, and extremely knowledgeable team of professionals at this center. We have felt so comfortable and cared for while at his dental center and my children always look forward to their next visit and continue to have no dental concerns because of their help throughout the years. My family and I have experienced numerous changes through the pandemic but have felt supported by their team. Thank you Family Dental Center!

I am very pleased with the service received by Dr. Gilbert and his staff. I was very apprehensive on my first visit because I did not know what to expect. I found Dr. Gilbert to be very professional and impressionable, I left my last dentist because of her rudeness and disrespect. Dr. Benjamin seems to provide quality treatment with a touch of love. My search has concluded because I am sold on this dental practice and recommend anyone looking for a quality dentist to use Dr. Gilbert.

Wonderful Office!!! Everyone treated me with kindness and respect from the front of the office to the treatment staff. They were all knowledgeable and communicated well with me every step of the way. Even when they were telling me what my bill will be they did it with such diplomatic care and concern that I was almost excited about paying lol. I feel safe bringing my whole family to this office. Call and make your appt today, their slots book quickly due to their exceptional customer service and treatment services!!!

I had a fantastic experience. From setting up the appointment, to reception, to the actual medical care, it was great. It's been quite some time since I went to the dentist and they made me feel so welcome and comfortable. The receptionist was extremely pleasant. The lead hygienist created a warm and relaxing atmosphere, which relieved so much of my anxiety, and she was clearly great at her profession, and the doctor had such a great bedside manner. From start to finish, it made a terrifying experience pleasant and enjoyable.

OMG!!! This is the best dentist I have ever been too!! The staff was wonderful. The doctor was down to earth. Dawn was so wonderful and explained everything, the X-ray tech was so nice. So excited I found this placed can wait to see them again on my next appointment

I've had the same dentist for several years and had to find a new dentist due to insurance purposes. I was nervous about relocating & trusting another dental staff but I found myself surprised to love and prefer this office and it's staff far more. The team is polite, quick and very concerned about your comfort. This is extremely important to me because I can be a little sensitive at times! It makes me feel better and more capable of withstanding temporary discomfort when I have someone to gently guide me through the process and again care so much about how I'm feeling ! Absolutely thrilled to have found you guys and cannot possibly be happier. I'm much happier here than my previous dentist and they were pretty good too. Happy to say that I'm actually excited for my future visit ! Thank you guys
