Absolutely Terrible. I always went in for my twice-yearly exams and promptly took care of any cavities exactly as directed by Hughes. I also always floss, brush my teeth, and swish with water frequently to keep things moving and away from my teeth. I was not blessed with movie star quality teeth, and there is always room for improvement, but I am responsible and attentive to the care of my teeth anyway. But recently, during a cleaning and so-called exam, the hygienist took an X-ray that revealed the tooth under my gold crown (number 18) was rotted out, as it turned out from top down through the root. I was told it would have to be pulled. I need my teeth, and so I went to Olympic Smile Care dental offices for a second opinion. The dentist there said it would have to come out, but then, in just a few seconds, he slid his dental pick to the molar next to it and told me it, too, had a cavity under that crown. In addition to cleaning teeth, the job of the hygienist is to look for trouble, and yet that tooth had been, according to Hughes' office manager, decaying "for about a year." In spite of doing dental work elsewhere in my mouth, Hughes never noticed that huge cavity in number 18, or the cavity next to it in number 17, or, for that matter, in a number of other teeth. Hughes shortly thereafter did a filling on my number 20, but even at that he failed to detect the multiple other spots of decay on that exact same tooth, which another dentist detected on x-ray. So, Hughes was fixing one decayed area and at the same time leaving two others on the same tooth. What's more, two other dentists said number 20 should have been crowned instead of filled, because it already had other fillings on it and was badly weakened by all those together. Although I had specifically informed Hughes' staff that Olympic Smile Care had detected a cavity in number 17--my last molar next to the one that was rotted out--Hughes did not bother to run his probe back to check it out, nor did he have it x-rayed. So, due to the gross carelessness of Hughes and his hygienist, I had to have a surgeon extract my number 18, a gold-crowned molar. This cost me a lot of money and pain, with the loss of a tooth I needed. Further, the surgeon I was referred to found an abscess along with the sprawling decay. I had the good sense to rapidly depart from this dental office. The office manager asked me to stay, and as much as passed the buck away from Hughes by indicating the failure to detect the problem was the fault of the hygienist. But the bottom line is the dental buck stops at the dentist, not the hygienist. The dentist I hired after escaping from Hughes examined me and found additional serious dental problems that had also long been overlooked by Hughes and his hygienist. You will see those on the attached estimate by my new dentist. That list does not include the very large surgeon's bill for removal of 18. By long ignoring numerous dental problems and by that disservice allowing them to worsen to the starting point of actually losing teeth, Dr. Brian Hughes and staff did a terrible thing to my health. I don't know about you, but I do not have money to spare; and the resulting expense of thousands of dollars for a string of teeth long overdue for repair has overwhelmed my insurance and has caused me serious financial harm. Shame on Hughes Family Dentistry.
