Dr. John Clary believes that you and your family deserve a balance of clinical excellence, personalized care, and cutting edge technology based on sound research, success rates, and your comfort. Dr. Clary received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and then attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry . He received his DDS in 1978 and gained further experience through a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City . After completing his residency, he began and continues to see patients at his private practice in Ames, IA.
Dr. Clary continues to learn all he can about the ever-evolving field of dentistry. He has attended a multitude of continuing education courses over the years with some of the most highly respected educators in the world, including: The Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education , the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Study, and the Kois Center in Seattle, Washington . In addition to participating in various dental study clubs, Dr. Clary is a member of the following dental societies:
Dr. Clary has conducted numerous seminars and focus groups in the area of dental practice management, exploring the relationship between quality of management and quality of care. He has also conducted hands-on seminars designed to promote clinical improvement by increasing the emphasis on quality diagnosis and treatment planning.
Dr. Clary enjoys helping people through his passion for dentistry. He makes every effort to offer his patients a well-developed philosophy of care, easy to understand treatment options, and a diverse range of dental services.
Dr. Sophia Chen is focused on helping people of all ages achieve and maintain beautiful, healthy smiles. Each smile is unique, and she believes in providing patient focused comprehensive care to address each persons' individual needs. She cares about the people she serves and makes sure you understand our options so that you can make the best decision for a healthy smile. With her years of experience, Dr. Chen prides herself in delivering quality, compassionate care in a comfortable and friendly setting. Having practiced dentistry in Keokuk for the past two years, Dr. Chen is excited to be returning to central Iowa and helping you achieve your best smile.
Dr. Chen received her bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2018. During her dental school training, she has been very involved with the Dental Public Health Club and received a distinction in Dental Public Health upon graduation. Through the Dental Public Health Club, she organized several community outreach activities for dental students that focused on prevention and community education on oral health. In partnership with the University of Iowa and Rotarians from District 6000 (Iowa) and Xicotepec, she participated in two service trips to Xicotepec, Mexico that focused on providing preventive care and education to school aged children. She was also active in several student-led organizations and continues to be involved in community based dental activities like the Iowa Mission of Mercy. In her senior year, Dr. Chen had the opportunity to provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages during her preceptorships at Broadlawns Dental Clinic and Sioux City Community Health Center.
Dr. Chen is committed to implementing the latest innovations in dentistry into her daily practice and engages in many hours of continuing education each year to provide the best care to her patients. She is trained in providing a wide variety of dental treatments, but especially enjoys doing InvisAlign, esthetic bonding, and treating children. Dr. Chen is currently a member of the American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association, Chicago Dental Society, and Academy of General Dentistry and is pursuing her fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.
What Dr. Chen likes most about dentistry is interacting with her patients and sharing her passion for dentistry. She enjoys getting to know each of her patients, listening to their individual concerns, and working alongside them to achieve and maintain optimal oral health. She strives to combine her clinical knowledge with her patients' goals to deliver the best possible care for each patient. While you are in the dental chair, Dr. Chen works with you to make sure you are relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment.
Bri is the jack-of-all-trades in our office --- being Dr. Clarys daughter, she has been involved in the dental world since birth. She is a registered dental hygienist whose current role is office manager somebody has to keep us all in line! She has experience in all things dental, making her the go-to for any questions you may have from insurance to treatment. She spends her free-time (whats that???) keeping up with her hubby Jeremy, their daughters Brooklynn and Makenna, 2 horses, 2 cats, 1 dog, a rabbit - and all the craziness that entails!
Kelly is our resident dental hygienist who has been a part of Expressions Dental almost as long as Dr. Clary has. She spends her time binge-watching Netflix (dont worry, she watches the documentaries) with her husband, Ed, their cat, KoKo, and occasionally her 3 grown children, Riley, Bailey & Ross all while enjoying her special talent cooking minute rice in only 58 seconds.
Traci began her epic dental assisting adventure 16 years ago in Michigan, where she grew up. She joined the team at Expressions Dental in November 2016 when she moved to Iowa. She lives on a farm with her husband, Ross, and her fur-baby, Trigger. Because of her lack of humanoid babies and a TV, she fills her spare time by satiating her extreme hobby ADD with a variety of arts and crafts.

Everyone is very friendly at Expressions Dental. From Bri managing the business,Dr. Clary is always top notch,Kelly expertly examines/cleans my teeth! Dr. Chen did excellent job replacing a veneer with assistance from Traci ! Kudos to them for dealing with my "white coat fever " Thanks Bill

I love the team at Expressions Dental. They are professional and caring. I had a bad experience from a dental office when I was in high school and was afraid to go to the dentist. But then I met the Expressions dental team and I was not so scared anymore. Just had my teeth cleaned, and wow it was relaxing. Dr. Chen examined my teeth and got things set up for my next issue I have with my teeth. So, I will give them 5 Star rating!!! Thanks again, Kirsten VanSoelen

Dr. Clary should retire from doing restorative dentistry. He wasn't able to restore a contact point of my teeth twice, mumbled something about my tooth anatomy.

These people are the real deal: No complaints ever. They just did everything professionally and with great care about me, first and foremost; even though I had a complex health history. They are on top of what is going on in the world, with TMD dentistry too, so that they can provide the best care to help each patient. Their TMD knowledge is amazing! They could be in a large city elsewhere, and would still be tops in their field. I had to move out of state, but they will always be in my heart. What an experience! I learned so much! Thank you all!

The entire staff is so friendly! My husband and I moved away from the Ames area almost 9 years ago, but we didn't even think twice about continuing to go to him for our dental care.
