Dr. Casiglia attended the University of Florida where he received BS and BA degrees. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and subsequently completed a Doctor of Medical Science as well as a five-year residency in Oral Medicine at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Casiglia has practiced for two decades in Massachusetts.
He enjoys the wide range of procedures that comprise general practice dentistry, and the ability to provide almost all treatments that a patient might need within one office. Physicians and dentists alike refer difficult diagnostic cases of mucosal disease, temporomandibular problems, infectious disease, or neurological pain to Dr. Casiglia when they need additional expertise. Dr. Casiglia is one of only of perhaps two dozen American doctors who is a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Dr. Casiglia is deeply committed to education - both his own and that of others. Beginning in high school, he has always been involved in teaching others. He currently teaches at several different levels (from dental students to senior residents) at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Brigham and Womens Hospital. He also provides continuing education lectures to dental and medical professionals in New England and across the country on subjects such as pharmacology, oral cancer, HIV disease, medical conditions, and facial pain. He is a Director and examiner for the American Board of Oral Medicine. He has even mentored patients into dentists!
Dr. Casiglia has also been involved in numerous clinical and laboratory research studies. He has published articles in national dental and medical journals (and reviews those of others for publication), authored articles for online medical reference, written book chapters, and served as editor of books.
His dedication to education is also evident in his approach to patient care. First and foremost, he will make sure that you as a patient completely understand the rationale for the proposed treatment, the risks and benefits of treatment, and what specifically is involved in the procedure. He will also make you aware of any alternative treatment options you may have. Dr. Casiglia will then provide the treatment upon which you agree in a compassionate manner with the utmost attention to your comfort and the best possible results.
When not at the practice, Dr. Casiglia spends most of his time sharpening his instruments for the next patient (or honing his dry sense of humor). He enjoys a dizzying array of music, exercise, building restoration, Scotch whisky, and foreign languages. He also serves on boards of non-profits in the community.
Lori has been practicing dental hygiene for more than 30 years in Massachusetts. She is in charge of our preventive and periodontal maintenance programs. She will perform your routine recall visits every three, four, or six months, and take necessary X-rays. And nag you about flossing.
Lori is committed not only to keeping your mouth clean but identifying and preventing future problems. She will make suggestions to improve your home care and may advise and perform scaling, root planing, or other therapy to ensure your teeth will have the proper support for a lifetime of use.
When she isn't banishing plaque and calculus, or nagging about flossingwell, lets be honest, shes always nagging about flossing. Lori uses her creative outlets as a member of the garden club. She is an outdoors and fitness buff and participates in all kinds of workouts, although she remains unsuccessful at convincing Dr. Casiglia to do yoga.
Raised in the Dominican Republic, Deya moved to Lynn to complete her high school. After some time as a medical assistant and advancing her education, she graduated from the Forsyth School of dental hygiene. She is the first in her family to complete college! She may be diminutive, but she is ruthlessly efficient at destroying heavy build-up on your teeth. And her soft voice will make you feel all the guiltier for not flossing. When she isnt giving your smile the ol spit-and-polish (with your spit, that is), she enjoys being active with her family, church, and yoga.
Nichole is Dr. Casiglias assistant and keeper of keys at Hogwartserr, the office. Aside from making sure patients are comfortable and dont drown in their own saliva, she ensures the staff have everything they need to treat patients. And at least one staff member is pretty needy, but we wont name names. Nichole helps manage inventory and the entire back end of the office. She knows where everything is when Dr. Casiglia cant find it, which is a majority of the time. When not chairside, she assists at the front of the office, and her calm and reassuring nature helps nervous patients through involved procedures. Dealing with the doctor, her young son, and her bengal cat have given her great patience and a sense of humor.
Though Dr. White was a talented dentist, his bedside manner is what earned him great renown. He was a true gentleman: he always had a firm handshake for the men and a suitable compliment for the ladies. Even the most fearful patients would leave with smiles on their faces once they experienced his gentle touch. With a memory like a steel trap, he could always recall your vacation, promotion, or grandchild's birth, even if it had been years since your last visit. He was a man of wit and great compassion for his patients and everyone he met.

I am so grateful to have a new dentist that fit me in today to deal with the problem that I was having and an extra Bonus when the office had a no show, I was able to get my teeth cleaned today. I would highly recommend this dentist to everyone. They are so kind and honest. Everyone in there was wonderful!

Catching up after 2 plus years and I was a little apprehensive about going back to the dentist. Essex Street Dental was great. The people are nice, the office is clean and comfortable. The hygienist was very good and my experience was very positive. I'd recommend them.

This was my and my Husbands first first visit. We are very very pleased with our new dentist. They get 5 stars for many reasons, clean, use new great technology to scan our teeth and keep records up to date, friendly, beautiful setting and they talked through all our needs and questions. They had answers for everything. They are our new families dentist and we look forward to having a long term dental relationship.

Most of us are not fans of going to the dentist. BUT Dr. Casiglia and his staff are so welcoming and kind that it becomes a pleasant experience. I love Lorri, the very kind hygienist! If you are afraid to see a dentist, this is the place to go.

Honestly, I was loathed to find a new dentist simply because I had been with my previous dentist in Boston for many years. But a change in jobs to the Northshore made the commute into Boston difficult. After much research I decided to on Essex Street Dental Medicine which is within walking distance of my home. I was not disappointed. From my first phone call to set up the appointment I found everyone very personable and friendly. When I arrived, Lucy was at the front desk and greeted me like a long lost friend. My hygienist was gentle and knowledgeable. As my teeth were being cleaned I could hear Dr. Casiglia talking with other patients in the office and it was clear that he took a sincere personal interest in them and their lives. When he came in to see me he was just a friendly and welcoming. I was also please to find that they have a dental plan called Kleer that offers affordable plans for people like me who do not have dental insurance. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to many years with Dr. Casiglia and his staff.

As a new client I was lucky to get an appointment at the Essex Street Dental Medicine the day after I called. I had a tooth that needed attention, and I found a great dental office. The dental technician was great. She was gentle and explained everything she was doing. I appreciated the fact that she did not expect me to answer her with my mouth full of tools. The dentist "saw" beneath the what was visible on the surface or in the x-ray. I appreciated that he let me decide what to do, and did not push me to the most expensive option. Although everyone was busy, I was impressed by the positive atmosphere in the office. I was very lucky to be there.

Doc is awesome... very cool guy with a passion for music & dentistry! I always put off the inevitable because of nervousness- but once we start & finish a procedure- whether it's a simple filling or an extraction- I couldn't be more pleased with the results! As far as hygienists go.... Lori is the absolute BEST! Let's not forget Lucy! An office only runs efficiently with a master at the helm... and that's Lucy! If you must go to the dentist.... and let's face it - we all do every six months.... Essex Street Dental is the place to go!
