Dr. Shin lives in Tenafly, NJ with his wife Hanna and their two children. He opened his fist practice in 2003 and named it Alpine Periodontics as a tribute to his collegiate athletic career as an alpine skier at the University of Rochester. Dr. Shin went on to complete his DDS Degree at New York University, College of Dentistry. He later discovered a passion for dental surgery while completing a general practice residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and Down Down Medical Center and went on to pursue a specialty program at NYU, achieving board certification in Periodontics and Dental Implantology 2003.
Dr. Shin is proud to be a clinical assistant professor in the post-graduate periodontal program at NYU College of Dentistry where he has been able to mentor the next generation of periodontists. Through his involvement in his church, Dr. Shin has also been able to volunteer time to various short-term medical missions to South America. In his free time, Dr. Shin enjoys spending time with his family, practicing Tae Kwon Do (Master Degree Black Belt), swimming and playing golf.
Dr. Shin believes in a conservative approach to periodontics which aims to save teeth by achieving and maintaining oral health. By implementing state of the art technologies, Alpine Periodontics is able to provide individualized treatment options to meet the needs of each patient. The best part of Dr. Shins dental career has always been the relationships he has formed with his outstanding staff and wonderful patients.
Dr. Amit Amin is a third year Periodontics resident at New York University. He grew up in North Carolina and moved to NYC to complete both his dental school and Periodontics training. Throughout his comprehensive training Dr. Amin has become proficient in ridge/sinus augmentation, soft tissue grafting, and guided implant placement. Dr. Amin will be joining Dr. Shin as an associate upon completion of his training.
Dr. Matthew Flaherty was born and raised in Glen Rock, New Jersey where he still lives with his wife Brooke and their dog Harley. He has worked at Alpine Periodontics since 2016 before earning his DMD at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduating Dr. Flaherty was awarded the Quintessence Award for Clinical Achievement in Periodontics. He is currently pursuing a post graduate certificate in periodontics at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Flaherty believes in patient centered care and truly enjoys getting to know each and every one of his patients.

Everyone in the office is very professional and friendly. The hygienist Kathy is excellent. She does a very thorough cleaning and stain removal. Dr Shin is a superbly competent periodontist who puts his patients above all else!!

Dr. Shin is the best oral surgeon around! I have had major dental work over the years, some in NYC.. I will only see him and wouldn't think of letting anyone else handle my surgery needs. He's the best. His staff is excellent as well. His knowledge and expertise leave me feeling comfortable,. I had several implants and a sinus lift. Niether are pleasant procedures but with him it is effortlessly! The outcome has been 100% perfection!

Doctor and Staff very attentive to my needs. Dr. Shin explained my situation. He allow me to see the infected area, the cost, and what needed to be done. He worked on my mouth, making sure I felt comfortable during the procedure. I was surprised to receive a call the next day from his staff, wanting to know how I was doing? My experience with Dr Shin and staff was very personal and professional.

I visited Dr. Amit Amin for dental implant appointment. He explained everything in very detail. This was my first visit Dr Amin and Dr. Shin are very good, curtius and polit. Staff is also very good. I would recommend them for any periodontal work.

I was referred to Essex Periodontics at my last dentist visit for receding gums. I made a convenient appt and visited Dr. Amin. He confirmed my gum situation and made a few recommendations. Extraction and bone grafting were done this morning for my 2nd implant with Dr Shin. The whole procedure was done smoothly and painlessly and I have no doubt that the 2nd implant will be as good as the first one. Highly recommend!
