Doctor Schmidt received a U.S. Navy scholarship and attended the University of Washington in Seattle where he graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1997. After completing a 3-year residency as a Lieutenant Dentist in the Navy he settled in San Diego where he loves the California climate. Doctor Schmidt is beloved by his patients and has provided exceptional family dentistry and orthodontics for over 20 years. He is married with 4 children and enjoys restoring classic hot-rods in his spare time.

Dr. Debra Edson, DMD is our root canal specialist at El Camino Dental Arts. Dr. Edson has been practicing dentistry for over 15 years. She served as a US Naval Dental Officer serving reservists and active duty personnel from 2008-2010. She is married and is an active mother of twin daughters. Welcome, Dr. Edson!
Dr. Canessa has recently joined our team of dental professionals. He graduated from University of Southern California in Los Angeles and has been practicing dentistry since 2012. He performs all types of general dentistry with extensive experience in prosthodontics (dentures) and oral surgery. Dr. Canessa grew up in Costa Rica and he loves to surf and hike in his spare time. He has done many volunteer missions to help the underpriveleged in the U.S and abroad.
Graduate of UCLA with post graduate training & experience in Prosthodontics, including Certification in Branemark Implants. Dr. Norton has been a valued member of the El Camino Dental Arts Team since 2014. He is a long time resident of San Marcos, practicing in North County San Diego since 1990. Amazing service... I'm a retired veteran and I was referred to Dr. Schmidt's office by the VA for a some dental work... and they gave me a five star service... from the moment his staff took my x-rays to the crown I got on one of my molars, the treatment has be stellar... They know what they are doing, unlike my last dentist, who's work almost cost me a tooth... So take it from me, the dentist you choose is important, and if you have the chance to be seen by Dr. Schmidt take the appointment, because you will be in great hands..

All around great service! The doctor is caring and took the time to explain what/why he was doing something. I never got the feeling they were trying to push a service that wasn't needed. The whole team made me feel comfortable and good about my teeth!

I have been a patient of Dr. Schmidt for several years: ever since he purchased his practice from Dr. Berry who had been my primary dentist since 1974. A few weeks ago, I had been informed independently by 2 dentists (a periodontist and orthodontist) that I had a build-up of tartar on my rear teeth where I was having an implant done. I was amazed by both of their comments; as I had a cleaning performed by Dr. Schmidt's wife (Gala) about a month earlier. I called Dr. Schmidt's office and informed Lisa (the office receptionist) of the comments made by the 2 other dentists and requested for her to surreptitiously address this with Dr. Schmidt. I expected his response to be something along the line of having me come in to be examined to either confirm or invalidate said tartar condition. Rather than taking this reasonable step, Dr. Schmidt exercised "nepotism" and merely asserted (without an examination) that he stood by his wife's work. He cavalierly refunded the cost of the prior cleaning with a check under the cover of a letter stating that he was withdrawing from being my dentist. BEWARE: Anyone who could possibly question the thoroughness of a cleaning by his wife will get marginalized and terminated as a patient. Shame on him for placing "nepotism" in front of the dental care of his patient!

I started using Dr. Schmidt's services after being referred by the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have had many dentists over my lifetime and I am very pleased with the care provided by Erich S. Schmidt, D.D.S. and Associates of El Camino Dental Arts. Superior care for my bridge work, crowns, implants, sleep guard, and deep cleaning. Extremely efficient and friendly staff for scheduling my appointments, submitting my VA paperwork, prescriptions, and more. Great for everyone, but especially proficient for military, veterans, and military family members due to some of the unique administrative requirements required for their dental coverage. Dr. Schmidt himself is a military veteran. If his staff can deal with often cumbersome military and government requirements, you know handling regular dental insurance is a breeze for this office. Highly recommend dental care provided by Dr. Schmidt and his associates.

Dr. Schmidt is wonderful, skilled and gentle dentist. It had been a while since I had been to a dentist since I have fear due to past experiences. Dr. Schmidt did not try to talk me into anything and did the work needed with humor and I felt very safe. His entire staff made me feel welcomed and communicated easily. My mom now is a patient and is so happy that she switched!

I had an appointment for the consultation with Dr. Schmidt today. He is caring and knowledgeable professional who explained all the underlying issues with my molars in great detail. I would highly recommend Dr. Schmidt to anyone seeking a detailed evaluation of their dental health. The staff were helpful too. I will be receiving an extensive treatment within the next two month and will eventually post an update with the results.

Thank you Dr. Schmidt for taking such good care of me today. I had a little bit of the jitters about getting dental work done but I was at peace the whole time. I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep. Thank you for your awesome bed/chair side manner, the jokes and making my experience a nice one. You and your assistant Mary were amazing. Nice office, always pleasant front office receptionist and overall lovely visit. I will be bringing my family and referring friends. Beware if you are a cash patient! Military family here, and I was a patient for over 5 years. My husband was experiencing tooth pain and came in for an exam. He asked for a schedule of fees because he wanted to be a cash patient, then the office staff treated him differently. Lisa always has a cold personality, but she told him they did not have a schedule of fees. My husband was asking "how am I supposed to know what I'm going to get charged?" Lisa said they don't have that information and claimed Dr Smith wouldn't even know the schedule of fees. It was really sketchy, even another office lady got involved. Bottom line, I got a letter in the mail a few days later stating I have to find another dentist because they won't care for me anymore. I got kicked out as a patient because my husband asked for a schedule of fees! The website claims they welcome military families, I don't feel this after the way they treated my husband!

My family and I have been patients of Dr. Schmidt for about ten years now. One of the most trustworthy and caring dental staffs I have ever encountered. They always make sure my kids are comfortable, and I'll never go anywhere else until Dr. Schmidt decides to retire!
