In 1952, the Jewish Hospital merged with two others in the cityMount Sinai and Northern Liberties hospitals. Taking on the name of renowned scientist Albert Einsteinwho graciously gave his permissionthe new network eventually grew to what it is today: a private, not-for-profit organization with several major hospitals, many outpatient centers and numerous primary care and specialty care locations throughout the Philadelphia region.

Today, we continue to honor that legacy, and our primary mission remains true to the founders intentand our health system has grown and evolved in ways they could not have imagined. We proudly provide compassionate, high-quality healthcare throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, and have gained a reputation for excellence and innovation.

Albert Einstein is a name universally recognized and one that has become synonymous with brilliant science and innovative thinking. He was also a compassionate humanitarian with a deep moral sense who changed the way we looked at each other and ourselves. His concern for mankind is reflected in his philosophical views and social activism.

In 1951, we sought permission to use Albert Einsteins name for the new medical center being formed through the merger of the Jewish, Mount Sinai, and Northern Liberties Hospitals now known as Albert Einstein Medical Center. On June 28, 1951, Albert Einstein wrote aletterin response, honoring the request. We feel a great sense of pride to share the name of this exceptional and humble scientist.

It opened its doors as The Jewish Hospital in 1866, with a few thousand dollars in donations, and an inspired idea: to provide medical care to 'the sick and wounded without regard to creed, color or nationality.'

Fast forward to today. What grew to become Einstein Healthcare Network comprises three hospitals and MossRehab, the top-ranked physical rehabilitation network in the state, admitting more than 40,000 patients and treating nearly 650,000 outpatients in 2015 alone.
