Inside each root is a channel that runs the length of the tooth. This channel is theroot canaland contains the pulp (nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue), which is often referred to as the nerve of the tooth. The pulp may be irreversibly damaged by bacteria associated with decay, very deep restorations, fractures, trauma, or periodontal disease.
In order to preserve a tooth in which this has occurred, it is necessary to remove the diseased pulp tissue. This procedure is known asendodontic therapy. Because endodontic therapy is concerned with removing only the pulp from the root canal, the root will continue to function normally because the supporting tissues remain intact. It is advisable to remove the injured pulp because it may become infected or act as an irritant to the tissues surrounding the tooth.

Dr. Joseph L. Packer was raised in Utah and attended Brigham Young University for his Bachelors degree in Exercise Science. Dr. Packer attended The University of Nevada Las Vegas for Dental School where he graduated Cum Laude and received his D.M.D. degree. After practicing for two years as a general dentist in Las Vegas, Dr. Packer attended Loma Linda University for a 27 month Endodontic Residency, graduating with a Certificate in Endodontics as well as a Masters of Science in Dentistry, M.S.D. degree. Dr. Packer maintains membership in the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. He has successfully passed the written exam component of the American Board of Endodontics with plans for board certification in the future. Dr. Packer is married and has five children.

What can I say? These other reviews are on point. Dr. Packer and Estella took great care of me. They listened (when I could talk), they monitored my pain, and suctioned before I really needed it. It was a great experience! I think I even heard someone get a blanket for another patient who was cold!? I came in for a root canal retreatment through an existing crown. My schedule was tight, but these guys made it happen with time to spare. If I ever need another root canal, I'll be EXCITED to go back to Encinitas Endodontic Specialists and Dr Packer!

Highly, highly recommend. Dr. Packer is caring, compassionate and exceptionally skilled. Lots of emphasis on your comfort and great follow-up after the procedure. Friendly, helpful support team, too. I felt well taken care of here.

No worries if your root canal is at this office--they are terrific--from the friendly front office to the kind and capable assistants to the amazing hands of dr. Packard--they make the experience as positive as possible (including tv,head phones and a pillow,)

Dr Packer's office was fantastic. His office is beautiful, clean, and in a convenient location. His staff are very warm and knowledgeable. I had no discomfort during my two root canals! FANTASTIC! I am looking forward to my next root canal.

Shirley went here yesterday, amazing experience. No pain even with the horrid injection that goes up into the nasal cavity and they saved her expensive dental work! She is pain free just a day later and very happy!
