After graduating from dental school in 2000, Dr. Elizabeth Schmahl accepted a residency in the state of Arizona. She worked with the Indian Health Service on the Tohono Oodham reservation. Making a four-hour round-trip commute to Sells, Arizona every day, Dr. Shcmahl gained experience with a variety of dental conditions and provided help and hope for people who really needed dental care. Because many of her cases had complex medical conditions, Dr. Schmahl realized the value of comprehensive dental treatment and strived for a better quality of life for her patients by minimizing dental pain and infection. This is a philosophy that has become a large part of Dr. Schmahls practice goal for every patient.
In addition to her residency, Dr. Schmahl had experiences with service-oriented dentistry. She says, 'I pulled my first tooth while on a missions trip in Lima, Peru. The only operatory light we had was a garden variety flashlight and our dental chairs were no other than the pews inside the local church!'
On a separate trip, Dr. Schmahl, along with a team of dentist colleagues and medical doctors, provided free dental care to needy children in several orphanages in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Upon leaving Santa Cruz, Dr. Schmahls most cherished souvenir was a hand-painted picture that one of her patients gave her as a thank-you. This special little painting still graces the wall in her home to this day!'

A good dentist I'm sure, but difficult to deal with. A couple of years ago she decided to no longer take United Healthcare insurance even though she was under contract with that insurer. We did get it straightened out, but it took awhile. Today she refused to allow the hygienist to clean my teeth because she wanted to take a set of screening X-rays. I refused since my primary care dentist is in Washington State and I have all my screening X-rays done there. I had some X-rays taken in May 2021 but they were not good enough for Dr. Schmahl. I told her that she could take an X-ray if she saw something suspicious in her exam, but that was not good enough. The only reason I go to her is to maintain a relationship so if something happens dental-wise in AZ, I have someone to go to. I would only let her do emergent work because I prefer my WA dentist. But she would not listen and refused my cleaning. Never again. It should be noted that I have very good dental health and have only had one cavity filled in the last 20 years.

After having my Dentist retiring after seeing me for 25 years, and moving to a new home, I worried about finding a new Dentist in the area. I received many recommendation for Dr. Schmahl at Tucson Estates. Dr. Schmahl office is very friendly and has everyone health concerns during the pandemic quality of care. Dr. Schmahl takes Tricare Dental Insurance and the front office is awesome in our Insurance taking care of the paperwork without us worrying. 5 Stars!

Dr. Schmahl is so kind and understanding. I was nervous about seeing the dentist. But walked out feeling comfortable and positive. Everyone I had an encounter with was kind and professional. Office was clean. I actually can't wait for my next visit.
