A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of infections and diseases of the soft tissues of the mouth and the underlying jawbone which supports the teeth. A dentist must first graduate from an accredited dental school before undertaking an additional years of study within a periodontology residency training program, in order to qualify as a periodontist.
The primary focus of this residency training is on both surgical and non surgical management of periodontal disease, and the placement of dental implants. Additionally, he/she is trained to provide comprehensive interdisciplinary treatment in joint with other dental therapists. In other words 'a holistic approach' to oral health.
The periodontist is mainly concerned with preventing the onset of gum disease (periodontal disease), diagnosing conditions affecting the gums and jawbone, and treating gingivitis, periodontitis and bone loss. Periodontal disease is a progressive condition and the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in the developed world.
The periodontist is able to treat mild, moderate and advanced gum disease by first addressing the bacterial infection at the root of the problem, providing periodontal treatment, then providing information and education on good oral hygiene and the effective cleaning of the teeth.

Myself, my wife and my son have had several gum surgeries by Dr Mortellaro over the years. Best dental surgeon we have ever experienced. There is a reason he teaches the dental students at University of Florida his skillset. He is an artist at his trade.

Recently I had a dental implant put in by another dentist. I developed some problems that caused me lots of pain. Dr Mortellaro looked at it and helped me get rid of the pain and swelling. I should have listened to my fiance and went to Dr Mortellaro for the implant. Live and learn. He will be my choice going forward. Let me not leave out the staff which is wonderful. They really showed compassion and were very professional. If you are having problems don't make the mistake I made. go see Dr Mortellaro .
