In our previous blog, we gave a brief overview of dental sealants and their benefits as an added tool in preventing tooth decal, especially for children. In this blog we answer some basic questions that people have about sealants.

Both children and adults can benefit from sealants, but the earlier you get them, the better. First molars appear around age 6, and second molars break through around age 12. Sealing these teeth as soon as they come through can keep them cavity-free from the start, which helps save time and money in the long run. Ask your dentist if sealants are a good option for you and your family.

Sealing a tooth is fast and easy. Its a quick and painless process. Your dentist will clean and dry the tooth before placing an acidic gel on your teeth. This gel roughs up your tooth surface so a strong bond will form between your tooth and the sealant. After a few seconds, your dentist will rinse off the gel and dry your tooth once again before applying the sealant onto the grooves of your tooth. Your dentist will then use a special blue light to harden the sealant.

As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing but sometimes a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visit, your dentist will check the condition of the sealant and can reapply them as needed.

Talk to Dr. Poz or Dr. Andi to see if you or your children would benefit from sealants. But Remember: Just because you have sealants doesnt mean you dont have to brush and clean between your teeth every day. Sealants are added protection against decay!

Dr. Posluszny, Dr. Poz to all who know him, has been a practicing dentist in Toledo since 1981. He has built his practice based on caring personal concern and individualized treatment for every patient.

Dr. Poz puts your well-being first, assuring you of a consistently high standard of professional dental care, attending 100+ hours of continuing education annually (2.5x the required number) to keep up-to-date on the latest dental healthcare developments, as well as new procedures and technology.

When hes not caring for patients, Dr. Poz can be found keeping young and fit on the golf course, playing pickleball, and working out at the Y. He also enjoys watching or attending football games to cheer on his alma mater the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Their oldest daughter received her undergraduate degree from Miami University and graduated in May 2005 from The Ohio State University School of Dentistry. Her husband is also a dentist and oral surgeon in a practice near Cleveland where they are raising their sons, Jack and Sam. Their middle daughter graduated from Villanova, is married, and now working and living near Chicago. Their youngest daughter graduated from the University of Dayton, received her Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, is married and living in Washington, DC.

As a proud and passionate Toledo native it is an honor to bring my education and skills back home to serve the community where I was raised. I am humbled and excited to be welcomed as Associate Dentist and become part of the Dr. Poz team and family.

I grew up in Rossford, raised by loving parents Debbie and Steve, who supported me through many years as a first generation college student and doctor. I have one sister, Ashley, who is an art teacher in Toledo for children with special needs. Throughout my upbringing and early years as a student, it became clear how dentistry intersected with my passions; Dentistry allows me to combine my love for art and science with my drive to help others. Dentistry is unique in that my skills allow me to directly help relieve pain, remove infection, improve a patients smile and overall quality of life.

I am a proud alumna of Adrian College where I earned my Bachelors Degree and The Ohio State University where I completed my dental education and training. After graduating dental school, I completed an additional year of training at the University of Toledo Medical Centers General Practice Residency in Dentistry Program. This program afforded me the opportunity to strengthen my clinical skills and gain valuable experience while serving patients including the financially underserved, medically compromised, and those with special healthcare needs.

When Im not dentisting, I enjoy many different activities. I am a proud dog mom to my mini dachshund named Ranger; I enjoy taking him for walks through the Toledo Metroparks and kayaking the Ohio waterways (he even has his own life jacket!). When it comes to travel, I love road trips to just about anywhere. Im a big foodie so I spend a lot of time cooking and baking with my sister at home people rave over my guacamole & homemade pizza! I love to practice yoga as well as tend to my garden and several houseplants. I also enjoy visiting family in South Dakota where we spend a lot of time boating and fishing for walleye on the Missouri River. My guilty pleasure is garage saleing and antiquing I love a good thrift find! And finally, people may be surprised to know that I was a competitive baton twirler and majorette for over 13 years through college!

I was drawn to Dr. Poz practice, because it was clear that everyone on the team genuinely cares about their patients and treats them like family (I mean, it says so right in the name Toledos Family Dentist!). Ive always dreamed of being a part of a practice like that and Im so grateful to have found it and even more humbled to have been welcomed with open arms. Dr. Ned Hein is a fifth-generation Toledo native and has been in private dental practice for more than 35 years. He has always treated his patients as he himself would like to be treated by a practicing professional.

Dr. Hein strives to stay current with the latest in dental technology and advances in innovative dental procedures. He is very detail-oriented and his patients benefit from his meticulous continuing care.

Dr. Hein is a past board member of the Toledo Dental Society and in 2000 served as its president. He chairs the Constitution and Bylaws, as well as Scholarship committees for the Society. He donates his professional services to numerous organizations for the under-served in our dental community.

Dr. Hein is a graduate of Wittenberg University, holds a Masterss degree in bacteriology from Bowling Green State University, and is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He also completed a general practice residency at St. Vincents Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

Marcias small stature belies her large caring heart and genuine concern for patients. She has an infectious smile and sense of humor that put you at ease and makes her easy to talk to. She has worked for Dr. Posluszny since 1988 and became Office Manager in 2003. Starting her dental career as an assistant gives her clinical understanding and patient empathy to discuss your treatment options with you.

Marcia is married, has two adult daughters, and loves being a grandmother to Brody, Mia, and Griffin. She also loves to travel, camp, hike, and kayak, as well as spend time with family and friends. People are often surprised to learn that she also officiates weddings.

Vicky has three nieces and four nephews and enjoys spending time with family. She also has a cat and a Rat Terrier. For fun, she enjoys spending time in the park, exercising, go-cart racing, amusement parks, and video games.

Tammy has been working in dental for over 20 years, during which time she has enjoyed a variety of responsibilities and duties. Tammy is our in-house expert at helping patients navigate the world of dental benefits and insurance. She is the person to contact for any insurance or billing questions.

Tammy is married and has two adult children and four grandchildren and loves spending time with family. Her hobbies include golfing, biking, kayaking, attending concerts, and doing anything outside. She and her husband love to travel and have adventures.

Emily has worked in the dental field since 2006 and recently joined the Dr. Posluszny team. She plans to complete the training to become a certified dental assistant with the eventual goal of attaining the license to place fillings.

Linda has worked in the dental field since 1978 and joined Dr. Posluszny in 2000. Prior to that, she worked 15 years for an orthodontist and then moved into general dentistry. Her orthodontic background provides additional insight for treating our young patients.

Linda has two adult boys. She loves to spend time with her mom, her granddaughter, and great-niece. She enjoys remodeling interiors, especially painting, and loves to bike, camp, walk, and work out and always enjoys a good football game.

Wendy has been in the dental field since 2000 and began working with Dr. Posluszny when Dr. Hein joined the practice in 2014. She has assisted with orthognathic and oral surgery, as well as extensive experience in endodontics and general dentistry.

Wendy has an adult son, daughter-in-law, and new grandson. She has several pets including a dog, several cats, and she also raises bantam chickens. She enjoys spending time with family and friends and riding bikes (both pedal and motorcycles). She also volunteers yearly at the Fulton County Fair.

Kristy has worked for Dr. Posluszny since 2000. In addition to being a licensed hygienist, Kristy holds an additional license as an EFDA (Expanded Functional Dental Auxiliary) along with an anesthesia certification that permits her to numb patients and place fillings. She truly enjoys being able to provide patients with this extra level of dental care.

Sandy is a registered dental hygienist who has been with Dr. Posluszny since one month after he opened his office and has been a hygienist for more than 40 years. She truly enjoys her job and the opportunity it provides to develop personal relationships with her patients, many of whom she considers good friends.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our long-time hygienist, Sandy Kohlenberg. Sandy was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December bravely undergoing both chemo and radiation treatment before finally succumbing Thursday afternoon, May 13, with her husband Larry by her side.

Sandy was the first employee hired by Dr. Poz in August 1983, shortly after beginning his practice 38 years ago. Over those years, her passion for dental health, professional care and focus on developing relationships with her patients endeared Sandy to a large, loyal and multi-generational dental following.

In addition to her Dr. Poz dental family, Sandy was passionate about gardening and her Ohio State Buckeyes. She had a deep faith and was a devout member of St. Joan of Arc parish where she served on a variety of ministries and activities over the years.

Lisa has worked in the dental field for more than 25 years. She has experience and training in both clinical and administrative roles. Her calm demeanor and gentle approach make people feel comfortable and at ease. As an advocate for healthy living and well-being, Lisa volunteers and participates in several community organizations. One of her goals is to have her Shih Tzu, Mia, trained and certified as a therapy dog.
